Donating plasma

I am looking into donating plasma has anyone done this? What was it like? I understand you have to be a certain height and weight to be accepted so need to go and weigh myself, just wondering what else I need to know?

I tried but didn’t weigh nearly enough and I’m average weight for my height.

Chemenger · 31/12/2020 10:37

I used to do it ( have since had a transfusion and can’t donate). It’s fine, takes longer than a normal blood donation but otherwise very similar.

It said I didn't weigh enough but I'm heavily pregnant and at least 1.5 stone over my usual weight so I don't understand their criteria

SpnBaby1967 · 31/12/2020 10:48

I believe it's something to do with your volume of blood in your body?

I'm 5ft 4in and it says you have to weigh over 12st 8lb at my height to donate.

Roystonv · 31/12/2020 10:54

A long time ago I used to give regularly. As Chemenger says it's not unpleasant to do so if you are happy giving blood and meet the criteria go for it.

Do you mean generally donating plasma or because you have had covid (as this is on the coronavirus board).

My mum looked into it as she had covid but it was at regional centres and she didn't want to have to travel 40 miles to get to her local one.

Obviously general plasma donation is different - blood.co.uk will have the info you need if you are in England or you can look at the website for your home nation if you are elsewhere.

I also got the text, sorry to sound stupid but is this just the same process as donating blood?

movingonup20 · 31/12/2020 11:11

Mostly only men can due to the size of extraction method

WhamRap · 31/12/2020 11:22

Do you mean donating plasma as you've had covid or donating platelets? It's platelets that require you to be a certain weight.

Jammygal · 31/12/2020 14:39

I was asked as had tested positive but when I went through the application they didn’t want me as I’m female - so that was that 😔

Roystonv · 02/01/2021 10:57

Times must have changed criteria wise. I was 5' 4" and about 8 stone when I donated.

Abraxan · 02/01/2021 11:21

I'm not tall enough when I looked. They called me up and ruled me out because of height!

WhamRap · 03/01/2021 20:25

I stand corrected. Didn't realise the weight/height restrictions were there for donating plasma too.

Abraxan · 03/01/2021 21:26

Mine was to donate plasma after having covid.
