No online learning for secondaries?

Agoodbriskwalk · 30/12/2020 18:00

So as I understood it, secondaries were doing online learning from Monday 4th, back in on 11th.

Now they’re saying vulnerable and key worker kids in from 4th, exam years in remotely from 11th and everyone else back on 18th (subject to reviews). Have I got that right? So most secondary kids have 2 extra weeks holiday?!

Why no online learning for all years from 11th?

And what’s safer about 18th?

Nobody?

The online learning is from the 4th.

AldiAisleofCrap · 30/12/2020 18:20

exams years are not remote from the 11th they are in school from the 11th.

Grooticle · 30/12/2020 18:22

During those two weeks the schools are also supposed to be setting up testing centres, and teaching the children who are in. Plus they’ve had no warning to set up online lesson plans. So I imagine there will be some online learning but it will be pretty patchy.

SirVixofVixHall · 30/12/2020 18:22

By the 18th we are going to be in a terrible mess, opening schools is a mistake.

PatriciaHolm · 30/12/2020 18:24

This is what he said - I read it as Exam years only, remote learning in the week 4-11, and return physically on 11th. Other years back physically on 18th. He didn't address the issue of remote learning for the other years in the week 11-18th.

"All pupils in exam years are to return during the week beginning the 11th January, with all secondary schools and college students returning full time on the 18th January.

During the first week of term - on or after the 4th of January - secondary schools and colleges will prepare to test as many staff and students as possible, and will only be open to vulnerable children or the children of key workers.

The 1,500 military personnel committed to supporting schools and colleges will remain on task, providing virtual training and advice on establishing the testing process, with teams on standby to provide in-person support if required by schools. Testing will then begin the following week in earnest, with those who are in exam years at the head of the queue. This is in preparation for the full return of all year groups on the 18th of January in most areas.

To allow this focus on establishing testing, throughout the first week of term, exam year groups will continue to have lessons remotely in line with what they would receive in class, and only vulnerable children and children of critical workers will have face-to-face teaching."

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 18:26

The plan to extend the staggered start is to get the mass testing done, which I think they are hoping will be mainly done in the first week if possible, so may be no online learning then, depending on doing the testing.

barbites · 30/12/2020 18:27

Surely testing will be continuous?

Agoodbriskwalk · 30/12/2020 18:28

Thanks for replying but it seems even the people on here don’t agree what’s happening! And his statement doesn’t actually say. What a mess!

And what’s the point of exam years being at the ‘head of the queue’ for testing when they could just as easily catch it the day after their test? Or not have the 48% accurate test pick it up at all?

OP posts:
AldiAisleofCrap · 30/12/2020 18:29

The testing misses 51% of positive cases am unsure why the government think it’s helpful.

barbites · 30/12/2020 18:29

It's just going to cause pupils to be sent home left, right and centre. If we thought it was disruptive in the Autumn term I feel we ain't seen nothing yet...

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 18:30

They want to test everyone to start with before they return to school. They all need to have 2 tests. Not sure how schools will be able to continually test, I assume it will mean they will have to have the sports hall out of action as a testing station but then where do they do pe/exams?

AldiAisleofCrap · 30/12/2020 18:30

People do agree it’s remote learning from the 4th for all but key workers or vulnerable, then exam tears return on 11th, other secondary years the 18th.
And yes no real point in the testing.

Agoodbriskwalk · 30/12/2020 18:36

@AldiAisleofCrap There’s actually no mention of remote learning for non exam years in that statement and people I know seem to think secondary has just got an extended holiday...

Hellvelyn · 30/12/2020 18:36

I understood that years 11 and 13 distance learning from week one and in school from week 2 and everyone else in beginning of week three. Keyworker and vulnerable children don't have face to face teaching in school, they are supervised doing the same online work that has been set for their peers. No idea what they will be doing whilst in school from 4th Jan as it seems work won't be set except for exam years to allow preparations for mass testing. What a confusing mess. Our head has been in touch tonight. Senior leaders have heard the news tonight just like everyone else. He seemed unsure of exactly what he's being asked to do. Emergency meeting of the SLT in school tomorrow apparently to try and make sense of the situation.

Phial · 30/12/2020 18:38

I did not see anything to say online learning for non exam years from the 4th. Has anyone got a link? It looked to me like extended holiday.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 18:38

It will be another instance where some schools provide remote provision and others don't. Why can't they write the guidance so everyone can understand it. However, if teachers are being roped into helping with testing they can't teach at the same time (even if the Government think they can!)

starrynight19 · 30/12/2020 18:41

How can keyworker and vulnerable be getting face to face teaching whilst all other students (bar exam years) remain at home with nothing ?

SeasonFinale · 30/12/2020 18:41

Our school is providing online/remote teaching for all year groups. Teachers were asked to prepare for both eventualities a couple of weeks before we broke up.

chantico · 30/12/2020 18:46

Aside from key worker families and socially vulnerable DC:

It's at least until 18th for going on-site - exception, those in exam years who go in from 11th.

I wouldn't be holding my breath for an actual return on 18th in those areas where primaries are closing

MegBusset · 30/12/2020 18:50

It's really not clear from the statements today. I'm waiting to hear from DC school - as they had already planned for online learning for non exam years from 4/1 I'm hoping this will go ahead. Their online provision was reasonably good during the last closures and certainly better than nothing.

They won’t be. They will be given the same stuff to do as the kids at home.

This. Yet again 'standard' kids can get to fuck apparently!

Luckily I've been able to change jobs so I can just about wfh plus now I have two kids to home educate (primary school also one of the 'few' that will remain closed) with no help. There had best be some online education for these children. That, or the time needs to be made up somewhere, such as a shorter summer holiday.

Meredusoleil · 30/12/2020 18:54

I have understood online earning for all secondary school kids from 4th, except key worker/vulnerable kids who can go in.

Then Y11 and Y13 can go in from 11th. Then other year groups in from 18th, assuming nothing else changes.

Online learning continues throughout until all year groups are back in.

My dc1s secondary had already said online learning until 11th anyway. So it's just an extra week so far.

starrynight19 · 30/12/2020 18:54

But that’s not what was proposed today. Online learning next week for y11 and 13. No mention of other year groups other than they return on the 18th.
