He is usually (always?) right in predictions as the government is v predictable in who they leak to... I think it’s the right decision fwiw.

Are more areas due to move into tier 4?

BluemoonIsawyou · 30/12/2020 12:12

Yes, that’s been pretty much confined I think.

Confirmed!

I certainly hope so. Our tier 4 area cases have just started dropping. It’s very obviously because schools have been closed seeing as the November lockdown did nothing and cases rose anyway. A couple of weeks extra delay to schools opening could make a huge difference here.

BluemoonIsawyou · 30/12/2020 12:15

Yes it just seems to be the sensible thing to do. Not long term, just until end of Jan maybe and then review.

I think he says secondary only though doesnt he? Primary go in!

Itisasecret · 30/12/2020 12:17

I don’t think it is a leak as such. I think he knows as an Ed reporter, the writing is on the wall. There has been an unusually tight radio silence on schools this past week. The press coverage of recent days doesn’t count, it is rehashed guidance which was out before Christmas. Desperately pushing for that to stay as is.

No.
borageforager · 30/12/2020 12:20

I think it should be all or none tbh. Not fair otherwise. And how can you insist national exams go ahead when you’ve mandated not all children can attend school?

Todayisgood2 · 30/12/2020 12:21

@Itisasecret so primary too?

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 12:22

Assume they will have remote provision

Retreatandsurrender · 30/12/2020 12:24

What about if you live in a different tier and go to school in tier 4?

Todayisgood2 · 30/12/2020 12:24

@BluemoonIsawyou where are you reading this please? Did it have info/prediction on primary schools?

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 12:25

Gavin Williamson is making an announcement at 4pm today, after Matt Hancock has announced any changes to Tiers

Which is why I don’t think it is a leak. You’ll have t4 families going to the SW as an extended school holiday. Like they are doing now in the Brecons. I think this is his best case scenario as an educated guess.
@Itisasecret so primary too?
Yes all schools but it seems to be an educated guess rather than a leak.

MrsCorden · 30/12/2020 12:30

I agree with @Itisasecret, it's normally clear when there's been a leak, and his tweets this morning don't seem to imply that. More just his informed opinion I think.
I also agree on the strong radio silence. It's been unusual. There's obviously a strategy (led by behavioural scientists I wonder) of announcing things with little time left on the clock.

Passmeabottlemrjones · 30/12/2020 12:33

Your school would be closed presumably?

He is suggesting a 'delay' rather than weeks and weeks of closing. Maybe a delay of a couple of weeks, I don't know?

The problem is, it might encourage more mixing - people thinking, 'oh well the kids aren't going back next week now after all so let's get together for NYE at least!'

RoganJosh · 30/12/2020 12:35

Anyone know if there is a Scottish announcement due? I’m wondering if it will be different.

Thought Scotland has already delayed till the 18th?
borageforager · 30/12/2020 12:38

Yes see here, www.gov.scot/news/schools-guidance/

Whereas current plan for primary schools in England is due back 4th Jan, and secondary schools going online from 4th-11th then back in classroom.

Robert Peston’s Twitter. But yes, possibly just his opinion rather than a leak per se.

Then they must scrap exams.

But even so what happens next year when some current year 10s will have had more teaching than others?

mrshoho · 30/12/2020 12:44

I believe this also. Hancock on TV this morning advising the general public to behave as though we have the virus and keep away from other people. Schools expecting to be back in less than a week won't be places where we can behave like this.

Yes, delayed till 11th and then staggered start from 18th - for now. We were told to expect an update in the new year so I was wondering if Gavin’s announcement precipitate ours.
