How long til taste comes back

Just wondered how long it took for your sense of taste to come back? I would be devastated if mine didn't come back ever.

I'm also worried about my baby, she's really off her food and I'm worried she's lost her sense of taste too... what if it never came back for her... she'd spend her whole life never knowing 😔

For me it came back rather quickly ... within a few days

MissSmiley · 29/12/2020 15:09

Five months on and I still can't smell a lot of things, and can't taste very well either.

Scottishgirl85 · 29/12/2020 17:34

It's very varied, my colleague has no smell/taste 9 months on and is very depressed about it. Good luck x

Mine was a couple of days thank god. Dh never really lost his although he was hospitalised. Dd was a couple of weeks. It’s a very random virus.

About ten days, then a week or so where it was muted - like everything was at 6 instead of 10. All fine now apart from raw vegetables which taste horrible and coffee which I’ve gone right off because it tastes weirdly muddy.

Taste- a few days

Smell- 9 weeks and waiting. Some is back but not earthy smells- I can't smell my White Company candles (bad) or the dog (good)

Some friends had it in March and say its changed ever since. Fingers crossed for you OP. Hopefully we will develop therapies over time which will help everyone who keeps suffering.

Thank you for all your replies ❤️

It's hard not to worry. It's by far the worst bit for me.

Does anyone know if children tend to lose their sense of smell and taste too? DD is too young to tell me.

My son (who I caught it from) didn't lose his taste but couldn't smell as much, he's 11.

I lost both, and it took around three weeks for it to start to come back. It went off like a switch but it came back much more gradually over about a week long period.

I found that aspect really hard and googled ALOT! Most people have it come back in ten days with 98% getting both senses back by day 28.

TolstoyAteMyHamster · 30/12/2020 06:58

DD didn’t lose her taste or smell.
And yes, like Sunny, mine just disappeared in a moment. Half way through a mouthful of food - it was the weirdest thing.
