To be hopefully that things will be back to normal by April

I’m convinced things will be mostly back to normal by April. Am in denial?

OP posts:
LivinLaVidaLoki · 27/12/2020 17:51

@madameBlobby they've gone very quiet. Probably off youtubing their evidence as we speak...
@PrincessNutNuts it always amazes me that the counter argument to not wanting harder and tighter and tougher lockdown after lockdown is just letting it rip. Apparently.
I was replying to a post about my post which referenced keying the virus run hot.

And I haven't read the whole thread but it is customary to have at least someone on each covid thread suggest that we "just protect the vulnerable and otherwise go back to normal" which is a polite way of saying let her rip isn't it?

What annoys me is that most people will clearly just see that despite the “I’m afraid” and “believe me” their posts are mince, but there are people on here really struggling with the restrictions and their mental health. To post such rubbish knowing people like that will read it is pretty cruel.

The counter argument is to fight the virus properly. But we haven't, and we aren't.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 27/12/2020 18:30

@onedayinthefuture

Hope is good. I think many people deny themselves hope because they can't handle the disappointment when it doesn't happen. Others really do relish in doom and never want things to be 'normal' because that would involve people enjoying themselves.

I think we'll definitely be on our way out of this by April.

Sorry to say, far too many of the latter on Mumsnet. My dd is 5 early April, I’d love her to have some sort of party seeing as last years shot to shit

It's not just about people dying. Long COVID is main reason we will never return to normal unless and until transmission is prevented.

Letting COVID rip would result in tens of millions of healthy adults and DC left permanently disabled.

Then there are 'mild' cases that result in an extended stay in bed and symptoms like loss of taste and headaches for weeks.

Life has changed permanently. We will all be spending a lot more time in our own homes from now on rather than gallivanting overseas on holidays or to large concerts. In many ways, that is something to celebrate.
I suspected when I started to read your posts that you were one of those people who seem to get some sort of grim pleasure from this and your last line confirmed it. Why do you think people going on holiday should be described so judgementally as “gallivanting overseas”? Why do you think people not being able to go on holiday or to concerts is something to celebrate? Or, indeed, being stuck at home? Is the resulting mental health impact on many also a cause for glee?

HelloMissus · 27/12/2020 19:44

barbados I think it’s all a wind up or shit reverse psychology- they’re on another thread suggesting army road blocks and 5k fines for going to the park.

TheHoneyBadger · 27/12/2020 19:49

It was 10k on another thread Wink

If nothing else hopefully by April it will be nice enough weather to socialise in gardens at a distance regardless of rules.

It sucks in winter.

wondersun · 27/12/2020 20:13

@BonnieDundee

I can't wait to see photos of people crowded together at festivals or packed into clubs again, not because I'm missing it, but I want young people to get on with enjoying life.

This.

Christ, some people act as though illness never existed prior to covid.

The things you mention have always been around. 4 years ago I contracted a bug that affected my lungs and breathing horribly for about 6 months. I was a fit and well 30yo with no previous issues and I ended up on salbutamol every 4 hours for 6 months. Before then, I had no history or asthma or breathing issues and I’d never had to use an inhaler in my life. One of my good friends was hospitalised for 2 weeks with pneumonia 2 years ago, she was 33 and healthy. No one expected the world to stop turning, or for people to hole up in their homes for months. Some people are acting as though young and healthy people have never gotten badly ill before in the history of the universe.

Illness always has been, and always will be, a part of our world. Sometimes people will inexplicably get badly affected by an illness that will barely touch someone else. Sometimes people will die of an illness that someone else will shrug off in a day or two. That’s life. In 2014/15 there was a particularly bad flu strain that resulted in the highest amount of winter flu deaths for decades - no one was calling for lockdown.

As soon as the death and hospitalisation numbers are back down to normal levels, there is no reason for these levels of restrictions to continue.

And your “disabled children” comment is ridiculously goady. It has been shown over and over again that children are affected very mildly.

User158340 · 27/12/2020 20:35

@Theotherrudolph

Well the DM is now reckoning the most vulnerable 15m vaccinated and no more lockdowns after February! I think that’s very unlikely unless they know something surprising about the Oxford vaccine. But I’m hopeful for summer, via a fairly bleak Jan-Apr period. I think some aspects of normal (far flung international travel, no masks in certain places like hospitals) are a lot further off though.
February is optimistic for 15 million but Oxford should be approved imminently.

All being well with the vaccine I think we'll see a phased return to normal from March, but we'll still have some restrictions in place through most of 2021.

tobee · 27/12/2020 20:43

How about late May/early June?

Xmas Wink
tobee · 27/12/2020 20:45

Why do Mumsnetters seem to think that most gloomy posts = most knowledgeable?

tobee · 27/12/2020 20:49
@iamusuallybeingunreasonable

Finally someone gets it.

I'm afraid those who think life as it was in 2019 will ever return are deluded.

It will be weddings and events by zoom in future. We will all need to get used to spending a lot more time in our own homes.
What absolute bollocks

Bluethrough · 27/12/2020 21:01

With the Oxford vaccine and the number of doses we have bought, we bloody well should be..

However, we needed french firefighters and the army to even begin testing 8000 drivers stuck in Dover but even then, we still failed to get them all done before the storm, ferries were sailing 1/2 empty.

We have also failed to get vaccine into 80% of care homes.

13 weeks till April, we need to be vaccinating around 3m per week, inc the 2nd dose, just don't see it.

Barbadosgirl · 27/12/2020 21:05

@HelloMissus

Perhaps but, honestly! People are really struggling...I cannot see any need for this.
Barbadosgirl · 27/12/2020 21:09

I am cautiously optimistic that things will be better by April although I think perhaps normal is a bit further off given I think they will lift restrictions gradually as more and more people are vaccinated. I do wonder why they are not vaccinating teachers as one of the priority groups. Would that not help keep schools open?

MrsFezziwig · 27/12/2020 21:10

@LitPeach

You’re doing it again. Please add “in my opinion” to the front of all your statements. And please don’t presume to tell me what to celebrate. You sound as though you’ve got a bit of a boring life to be honest, and want everyone else to be as dull as you.

CountessFrog · 27/12/2020 21:17

I think you’re right.

Spiratedaway · 27/12/2020 21:19

@LitPeach

No way will things be anywhere near normal by Easter! In fact, there will be no going back to normal so long as COVID is being transmitted.

Long COVID has the potential to leave millions of healthy adults and DC permanently disabled if the virus is allowed to run unchecked.

I'd also rather myself and my DC were not laid up in bed for days with a temperature and pains even with a mild case Hmm

Life has changed forever- restrictions will br in place forever. We will simply not see the kind of large events and concerts again.

Instead of popping round to DM's for coffee, this will be done via zoom from now on I'm afraid.

The sooner people understand this, the better.

Laughing at this
Spiratedaway · 27/12/2020 21:20
@Bluntness100

Even when everyone is vaccinated, that will not be enough to ease restrictions as vaccines do not prevent transmission.

We will therefore need to have restrictions in place forever unless and until transmission is prevented. In order to prevent Long COVID and millions being unable to work for weeks with even mike symptoms.

I do not understand why some people seem unable to just stay at home and are desperate to go out and put people at risk.
Are agoraphobic? You sound it

MrsFezziwig · 27/12/2020 21:26

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

The American guy, Dr Faucci(?) has just said 2021 will be worse than 2020

Fauci. And I can’t find anywhere he has said this, though possibly you have a link. The most recent statement I can find is from the Harvard Gazette:

The nation’s top infectious disease doctor offered a timeline for ending the COVID-19 pandemic this week, saying that if the coming vaccination campaign goes well, we could approach herd immunity by summer’s end and “normality that is close to where we were before” by the end of 2021.

User158340 · 27/12/2020 21:29

Pfizer was always going to be a logistical challenge given the way it needs to be stored.

If they can have Oxford ready to go by the new year it'll be a lot quicker.

MrsFezziwig · 27/12/2020 21:38

I do wonder why they are not vaccinating teachers as one of the priority groups

They certainly weren’t included in the original priority groups, but the lead article in the Sunday Times today states “it is understood that teachers will be high on the list for vaccination”. Perhaps someone in the government has finally clicked that you can’t actually keep schools open if large numbers of staff are sick or isolating.

bumbleymummy · 27/12/2020 21:41

@LitPeach 😂😂😂 What utter BS
