It's not just about people dying. Long COVID is main reason we will never return to normal unless and until transmission is prevented.
Letting COVID rip would result in tens of millions of healthy adults and DC left permanently disabled.
Then there are 'mild' cases that result in an extended stay in bed and symptoms like loss of taste and headaches for weeks.
Life has changed permanently. We will all be spending a lot more time in our own homes from now on rather than gallivanting overseas on holidays or to large concerts. In many ways, that is something to celebrate.[/quote]
Christ, some people act as though illness never existed prior to covid.
The things you mention have always been around. 4 years ago I contracted a bug that affected my lungs and breathing horribly for about 6 months. I was a fit and well 30yo with no previous issues and I ended up on salbutamol every 4 hours for 6 months. Before then, I had no history or asthma or breathing issues and I’d never had to use an inhaler in my life. One of my good friends was hospitalised for 2 weeks with pneumonia 2 years ago, she was 33 and healthy. No one expected the world to stop turning, or for people to hole up in their homes for months. Some people are acting as though young and healthy people have never gotten badly ill before in the history of the universe.
Illness always has been, and always will be, a part of our world. Sometimes people will inexplicably get badly affected by an illness that will barely touch someone else. Sometimes people will die of an illness that someone else will shrug off in a day or two. That’s life. In 2014/15 there was a particularly bad flu strain that resulted in the highest amount of winter flu deaths for decades - no one was calling for lockdown.
As soon as the death and hospitalisation numbers are back down to normal levels, there is no reason for these levels of restrictions to continue.
And your “disabled children” comment is ridiculously goady. It has been shown over and over again that children are affected very mildly.
