Will they open in January or are we thinking it’s unlikely? One of us is a key worker, the other one isn’t.

OP posts:
laudemio · 24/12/2020 10:10

I think they will open for key workers i hope closed for everyone else.

tappitytaptap · 24/12/2020 10:15

If they do I hope I’m not paying to look after my own children whilst working this time.....

OpheliasCrayon · 24/12/2020 10:25

Same situation here and I'm hoping they do.

I asked when I collected my little one the other day and they said in march they opened but only for kids who had two key worker parents but then other nurseries in their chain changed it to only one key worker parent.

I'm a key worker and my husband works at home but he can't look after our 2 year old and work so I'm hoping they will let her go. They said they should do and not to worry.

I don't even know if I will need to be in work though if schools shut ... As I'm an SEN teacher. We stayed open throughout until now though so I would assume that I will be going to work.

Scottishskifun · 24/12/2020 10:27

Already shut in Scotland from boxing day unless key workers category and dependent on where you live to the level which is accepted

Spiratedaway · 24/12/2020 10:32

Hope they are open I can't cope with 2 at home and working!

YakkityYakYakYak · 24/12/2020 10:36

I bloody hope so. Having to work full time and look after a toddler at the same time nearly broke me last time.

Badgerstmary · 24/12/2020 16:44

Hopefully they will be shut. Nursery staff are unable to wear PPE so if they are open, the virus will continue to spread to other children, staff & all their families. Yes, you might need to have your child looked after, but sacrificing other people’s lives does not sound a fair exchange.

MrTumblePulledAKnifeOnMe · 24/12/2020 16:51

I hope so. Bloody dangerous trying to work machinery with a child at home.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 24/12/2020 16:56

@Badgerstmary agreed. I work in a nursery and I want them closed it's not fair on the staff many have vulnerable family members at home.

PeggyMoo · 24/12/2020 16:58

I want them to open. Parents won’t be able to continue to pay fees again if they are closed like last time

IHateThesePosts · 24/12/2020 17:03

They should be. Times have been so tough, full school/nursery closures will push working parents over the edge.

OpheliasCrayon · 24/12/2020 17:05

Well hang about.

What do I do because SEN schools have to stay open. And therefore I have to go to work and I am unable tk wear any PPE and am in constant close physical contact with all my pupils.

So I have tk go to work with no PPE during any lockdowns but now you're suggesting I'm not allowed to send my children to nursery?

Thanks that's kind of you.

OpheliasCrayon · 24/12/2020 17:05

I have no idea why my phone is writing tk, not to!

DfEisashambles · 24/12/2020 17:08

@Badgerstmary people are fully aware of the risks to nursery workers and their families of losing loved ones but their children being looked after is much more important to them.

DfEisashambles · 24/12/2020 17:09

@OpheliasCrayon the government has failed you, not nursery workers who want to be safe. No one should have to risk their lives unprotected.

tappitytaptap · 24/12/2020 17:13

@DfEisashambles I hope then that parents will not have to pay any fees if the workers so want to stay at home.

DfEisashambles · 24/12/2020 17:16

@tappitytaptap if the government asks nurseries to close then they should pay them too or help the parents pay most of it.

This isn't true at all. My son went from a happy independent toddler to being terrified of people, quiet and withdrawn. It's not only adults mental health which is affected by lock downs and adults can convey their feelings far better.

Parents also care about nursery staff we trust our most cherished thing of all to them we don't want them sick either. Do you even know what the majority of nurseries have set up to protect children and staff? The rigerous procedures they follow?
Parents aren't allowed inside nurseries, it's masks at handover the child straight away washes their hands, staff do not go between rooms, the sizes are limited, the children in a lot of nurseries now spend minimum 75% of their day outside, items from home are limited and they all have procedures in place for if a child starts showing symptoms as well as a do not send your child in.

My sons bubble had a case within his group not one other child or any member of staff developed covid thanks largely to the rigerous policies they had in place.

So before you spout working parents don't care about staff or all we want is babysitters how about you bother to even look into all the measures in place from the nursery directorate?!

Musicaldilemma · 24/12/2020 17:25

If nurseries close again I am not going to pay, nor am I going to work and pay 40
Pc plus tax.
I have already discussed it with my employer.
We were all worked to the ground last time and my kids were miserable. I am not doing it again, nor should you OP. Most of my friends (working mums) feel the same way. I do feel sorry for the nursery owners but they should claim what they can of the government.

If the parents want their kids in school I am 100 percent happy and willing to go and be there with them. No one is failing. If children with SEN need to be in school I'm happy to teach them. I'm CEV and I have attended throughout, gladly

EYProvider · 24/12/2020 17:31

I own a nursery in London. We haven’t been given any indication that nurseries will close and it will be a disaster for the childcare industry if they do. It’s already on its last legs - this would finish it.

All my staff have had covid. I assume it was the new contagious strain because the whole lot of them caught it last month. None of the children had any symptoms, but I assume they would have all tested positive if they had been tested (they weren’t). Only one child was tested and she was positive.

All the staff were fine, even the older ones. In fact, only two had any symptoms.

It would be madness to close nurseries on the basis of the above. Nursery staff who do not want to work because they do not feel safe should look for other jobs and let the rest of us get on with it. At this rate, the economy will never recover.

Looneytune253 · 24/12/2020 17:32

In the new guidance all early years will be running as normal in tier 4. Wraparound services are only available if you're at work but can't imagine many needing those if they're not working anyway

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 24/12/2020 17:33

Nursery I work at didnt charge parents during the lockdown period only once it reopened. I dont know if they'd be able to do that again this time. Know few nurseries shut permanently last time which is sad to see.
We've had cases of covid for staff but was contained to one bubble. Nothing since then and hopefully nothing again!

Haven't heard anything about nurseries shutting but probably be told last minute if its the case...

SquigglePigs · 24/12/2020 17:39

I hope so! Working at home and looking after a toddler at the same time nearly broke us last time. Just because people aren't key workers doesn't mean having a toddler at home 24/7 is manageable.

Our nursery hasn't had a single case from being open for keyworkers throughout and then fully opening in June, and nor has any I know of through friends etc. There is absolutely no good reason to close nurseries.

Mamagotskills · 24/12/2020 17:45

Shut in Scotland and spaces only available if both parents are co- workers and you have no alternative options. May as well resign now...
