Why Tier 4 from boxing day

I don’t understand if cases are getting out of control to pretty much be put in lockdown in 48 hours time, why are the government waiting till Boxing Day to put them in tier 4, and allowing a relaxation of the rules still for Christmas Day. It’s seems mad to me.

When Tier 4 was first announced for London and South East only about 7 hours notice was given until Tier 4 came into effect.

I’m sorry but it is just as cruel for those already in tier 4 to see others still getting Xmas when they can’t.
Oh definitely I agree , I think it's awful and I'm sorry for people in tier 4 . it's no better that people in tier 4 have had a few days to plan before Christmas it's still really shit .
I was just thinking to say if they decided on the 23rd to go go to tier 4 the next day you'd just get people going out to buy food that were going to relatives . That's probably the reason otherwise it would be the next day it would start .

@Moonandstars25

Those of us who went into tier 4 over the weekend had sufficient time to rearrange their Xmas plans. It would have caused utter carnage to put more people into tier 4 at 3pm today but the notice allows people to decide if they want to continue with thier plans. Some people will go ahead, others will decide to stay home and have a takeaway.

I’m tier 2 and heading for tier 4 Boxing Day.

Our numbers are still relatively low but rising very rapidly and it is scary. We’ve been relatively ‘safe’ on this little bit of the south coast up until now but it is spreading from the east fast and I am very worried right now.

Roll on Boxing Day.......

DollyParton2 · 23/12/2020 20:50

I’m Tier4 already and I think it’s bloody ridiculous. Some of these areas still Tier2 about to go Tier4 have much higher rates than my area. If we have to suffer with these rules ruining Christmas then let these other areas too.

NiceViper · 23/12/2020 20:54

If it wasnt Xmas week, the press conference would prob have been tomorrow (they're often on Thursdays) with clampdown on the following day. They've moved the announcement forward a bit and the implementation back a bit. Which won't make any difference in the greater scale of things.

Other than to get people to go home promptly after their day of Christmas mingling, not sneakily stay on a bit and say 'hi' to others in the childhood hometown

MarshaBradyo · 23/12/2020 20:55

Not sure. Some would comply

Motorina · 23/12/2020 20:58

I'm in a T2 to T4 area. I suspect those who would comply have mostly done what I've done - cancel their plans because, whilst they may still be legal, they no longer seem wise.

Goodness. Wah wah it’s not fair. If I’m miserable I want everyone else to be forced to be miserable too. What a lovely Christmassy sentiment, dolly. 😳 This year will be the first Christmas in about 25 years that we haven’t had family and friends to stay and celebrate. It’s a bit sad - it will be very very strange and the children will struggle - but I think wishing misery on others is a tad too much. Take a breath and make the most of what you do have. And I hope you find a space for calm and hope.

@Moonandstars25

You can still see your family you don’t have to listen to the rules,

Lemons1571 · 23/12/2020 22:53

I’m tier 2 going in to tier 4, but it makes no difference to us, only got one parent in a support bubble irrespective of tiers. I would give you our tier 2 status on Xmas day if I could.

TroubadorinTrouble · 23/12/2020 22:56

The restrictions are almost entirely policed by consent. They can’t actually be enforced, so they rely on people accepting the rules are legitimate and complying with them.

If Tier 4 starts on Boxing Day the levels of compliance will be much higher than if it had started immediately, before Christmas Day (when there would have been widespread flouting of the rules).

Fundamentally, the government needs to take people with them, something they consistently fail to do.

herecomestheSon · 23/12/2020 22:57

We went from tier 2 to tier 3 today. It makes fuck all difference to us. We have every intention of being resolutely antisocial for the entire holiday (though some very socially distanced outdoor carol singing may happen).

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/12/2020 23:05

My area went from 1 - 3 after the last lockdown. I'm finding that those resenting us now staying in tier 3 were the ones that managed to stay in tier 3 last lockdown.

I feel as though there is a North/South divide once again. Its totally ok to lock for North down, but it is outrageous when its the South.

DecemberStar · 23/12/2020 23:06

I thought MH was going to cry too. He looked very worried.
