What is the situation in London?

I read about the covid situation in London and it sounds bad. I see the graphs of case numbers and it looks terrible. But my doctor friend who was called up in lockdown 1 and is ready to be called again has heard nothing this time round. It seems they are not running out of capacity at all.

Why is this and what is the real situation?

I'm in Central London. I don't know anyone who has it, but that is partly because I have not seen anyone. However the electrician this morning, who lives in Victoria, was saying that suddenly in the past week he knows several people who have caught it. Whereas he did not know anyone all summer who did.

carlaCox · 22/12/2020 16:41

I know a lot of people who are getting tests in London in order to go and see family over Xmas (yes I know it's breaking the rules). This is making it almost impossible to get a test as all the testing centres are fully booked. I'm sure this must be a factor in driving up case numbers.

On the bright side I walked past a vaccine centre today. A line of cars of 80+ year olds driving in to get their jab with a really upbeat and funny guy directing the traffic and welcoming all the "young ladies and gentlemen". Put a smile on my face.

I'm in the midlands our hospital is at breaking point. I am scared.

Newt432 · 22/12/2020 17:04

In London. Just been tested as have symptoms but niece has it (east London) from a breakout in school.

Work - colleagues have tested positive and whole year group sent home. (Secondary)
Many more positive cases now that start of September.

NE London here, and we are in trouble. Both kids are in their second consecutive period of self-isolating. Huge queues to get tested. Half the primary school were told to self isolate in the last week of school. The schools all closed early and i worry they'll reopen in January.

mrshoho · 22/12/2020 17:59

if you put on itv London news 6pm they are reporting 50% increase in covid admissions in the last 7 days. That should give you the the latest accurate data.

DandyCandyCane · 22/12/2020 18:03

I’m in London and I know people who’ve got it recently. Recent outbreak in my child’s central London school meant my child had to isolate and then the school went online a few weeks before Christmas. I feel as if the net is closing in which I didn’t feel in March, even though I got Covid in March.

I know several people who’ve not followed the rules strictly but who excuse their own transgressions. Even when London was in tier 3 it wasn’t okay to drive back and forth to second homes in different tiers. Having your parents to stay for Christmas in London with you and your partner is not following the support bubble rules as that can only be one person mixing with another household. Meeting up for a drink in the street is against the rules, even though it’s outside.

InglouriousBasterd · 22/12/2020 18:03

No bubbles burst in DDs school, no cases. Primary school in London.

yeOldeTrout · 22/12/2020 18:05

DD was in student halls in very centre of London... said there were some cases found in October but absolutely nothing since. The residents all had tests start December and still no positives.

LastChristmas20 · 22/12/2020 18:10

First lockdown I knew no one with COVID.

Daily I'm hearing of new people with it.

Half of DCs school isolating.

Seems much more real and closer to home now.

Mincepiesallyearround · 22/12/2020 18:14

I’m in London and since March know one person who had it. This whole term at school in my sons primary one class, the year above, got sent home. At my other child’s nursery a bubble burst twice, not hers though.

carlaCox · 22/12/2020 18:16

Let's remember that in the first lockdown there was no testing so it's not surprising we didn't know anyone with covid. The only way you'd know is if you'd been hospitalised. A quick look at the graphs of deaths and hospitalisations shows we're nowhere near the peak of the first wave.

I'm exactly the same. Didn't know anyone up until late November, now know of 5 families who have it - caught from asymptomatic school children.
CloudPop · 22/12/2020 19:02

And they don't know they have it just because they have been tested, they got tested because they were ill.

We have walk in mobile test centres set up in my area. They are actually encouraging the general public to test whether symptoms or not.
Silvergreen · 22/12/2020 19:16

Covid patients in my hospital in south London doubled overnight - increase of 75 patients. I'm hearing that today was bad as well but don't know the numbers yet.

Crunchymum · 22/12/2020 19:23

Past week alone I've had my cousin test positive, as well SIL partner, plus cases in my Y1 class and DC3 nursery (obviously names haven't been given in those cases). One of my nephews and my SIL herself are awaiting test results as they have symptoms.

Until 10 days ago I only knew one person who'd had it Shock

Aprilrainbow · 22/12/2020 19:24

A lot of unbelievable posts on the first two pages, then he must have got board & gone somewhere else.

QOD · 22/12/2020 19:57

I’m in Kent, right on the coast. I know so many people with it right now. It’s terrifying
Last time I vaguely knew 1 person distantly.
Let me add up Christ. Think currently 19 FRIENDS and family members have it. 1 is in icu
My dd works in Kings and it’s rife amongst staff. She’s currently isolating as her housemate has it
70+ admissions the last couple of days with covid

Silvergreen · 22/12/2020 20:19

Yes, I'm at kings. It's in a bad way.

Silvergreen · 22/12/2020 20:20

I think patient zero of this new strain must've been in Kent.
