To think Macron is ridiculous

These poor lorry drivers are very isolated anyway due to the nature of their jobs. The chances of them catching this new super strain and transmitting it are even slimmer than most people’s very slim chances. Macron’s decision to close the border is a hysterical overreaction and no doubt politically (Brexit) motivated. Open the borders and let them through!

There is a difference between patrolling our borders and threatening to board, arrest and charge fishermen in waters they are at present allowed to fish in.

The plan was to deploy Royal Navy ships to patrol UK coastal waters in the event of a no-deal Brexit on January 1, NOT to deploy them now where EU fisherman have every right to fish in UK coastal waters.

@Porcupineinwaiting Hmmm, it's not as simple as that, though, is it? I think there's often a difference in attitude between boys and girls of 15, as many boys of 15 might be quite pleased to lose their virginity to an attractive adult woman (in fact it's something they might brag about), whereas many girls would not be so eager. But that aside, in Macron's case the adult woman he had sex with when he was 15 was his teacher... that does put a very different slant on things, it's not something most people would approve of. The fact that he later married that woman and he is still with her, despite the large age gap, is very unusual, but does not mean that what she did was right.

Anyway, reading up on the sexual consent issue, it seems that France did not have any minimum age legislation previously, so I guess 15 is better than the original situation, but still a bit young, IMO.

Defenbaker · 22/12/2020 14:02

@jasjas1973 and @ListeningQuietly Guilty as charged, I skimmed the thread and didn't research the issue re sexual consent, I just took the PP's word on that as being correct. See my recent post where I have posted further on that.

Livinginthecity · 22/12/2020 14:13

He is grandstanding in the most ridiculous way. Most of the drivers are from the Continent wanting to get back for Christmas. I gather the Commission has decided to lift the ban on flights as it is causing problems with supply chains like the Royal Mail.

Livinginthecity · 22/12/2020 14:15

The new strain is already circulating on the Continent so a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Exactly. If French fisherman continue to fish in places thet don't belong to them after a no deal Brexit, then of course they will be warned off.

I don't get people's thinking.

  1. UK says it has a new mutation that is 70% more infections.
What do ppl think other countries will do? Ask brits to please come in hordes? Of course they shut their borders. They are in deep shit already. They don't need to be dealing with something else that they can prevent from happening
  1. I really think that many people actually have no idea where their food is from. Many think it grows on the shelves.... Of course there will be shortages/delays in case of no deal. Anyone thinking otherwise should have pulled their head out of their arses long time ago.
DuncinToffee · 22/12/2020 14:46

A sovereign country in the EU closing its borders to protect its citizens until proper measures can be put in place, who would have thought it.

Yes, shut borders to travellers, tourists etc. Not to other Europeans trying to get their job done and get home to their families for Xmas.

That’s the point, you can’t prevent it from happening.

France were supposed to have hit the peak of its ‘second wave’ in November but cases are not dropping as quickly as they would expect to have seen. Is it a second wave of the same virus or is this a mutated virus same as U.K.?

The UK stops people doing their jobs and seeing their families
Windrush
Why are Brits surprised when other Sovereign countries do the same ?

Now you are really clutching at straws 🙄
Baileysforchristmas · 22/12/2020 15:01

I doubt we are the only country with this variant, I doubt it started here. we have let most countries travel here without any tests, we should’ve closed our borders in March, big mistake, we are now paying the price.

ListeningQuietly · 22/12/2020 15:01

Sovereign countries have the right to close their borders to protect their citizens.
Its as simple as that.

They don't have the right to restrict the supply of food. Also this isn't just between France and the UK you do realise?
ListeningQuietly · 22/12/2020 15:04

They don't have the right to restrict the supply of food.
Please link to the rule that says they cannot shut their border to all traffic

and actually the French are NOT stopping lorries from arriving in the UK
they are stopping vehicles going into France
not out Hmm

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 22/12/2020 15:07

I have told someone whose ethnic origin I don’t even know that if they don’t like it in the U.K. they can go elsewhere. Hardly xenophobic

To be fair xenophobic is not the word Id use to describe posters who say this

TheSunIsStillShining · 22/12/2020 15:08

They don't have the right to restrict the supply of food

Please point me to why not? UK decided to leave the EU. UK decided not to sign a deal with the EU.
They are not restricting our food supply. There are about 200 other countries in the world UK can get food from. The UK ACTIVELY CHOSE not to sign any fucking deal. The French are not trying to starve us. They are exercising the exact same right that the UK has pinned on their forehead: sovereignty.

Also: as long as the french or any other country don't literally make a long line of navy ships around the UK + a dome above to prevent any kind of freight coming in they are not restricting the supply of food.

People seem to be deranged that it is some kind of mandatory privilege that France has to open and operate their borders with us. They don't have to.

justanotherneighinparadise · 22/12/2020 15:08

France in part of the EU and the EU are currently trying to find a way forward that all the countries agree on. Hence the 48 hours for everyone to agree a plan of action. I don’t think anyone is trying to be difficult.

Mistigri · 22/12/2020 15:18

They don't have the right to restrict the supply of food.

They are letting in any lorries that want to come.

It's up to the U.K. government to take responsible decisions to feed their population. Nothing to do with Macron. He's busy taking responsible decisions to protect his citizens.

StormzyinaTCup · 22/12/2020 15:22

People seem to be deranged that it is some kind of mandatory privilege that the French has to open and operate their borders with us. They don't have to.

Its also seen to be deranged to think that the French have a mandatory privilege to continue to fish our waters after 31st December. They don’t.

At the end of the day this is what it’s all about (IMO).

JamieLeeCurtains · 22/12/2020 15:31

Yeah but lots of British trawler skippers sold their fish quotas to other skippers of non-UK nationalities.

Which is now a problem.

MrsMiaWallis · 22/12/2020 15:32

Well they do, as they have agreed to let other countries access the UK through France.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 22/12/2020 15:32

Awww there there, did that nasty man Macron close his sovereign borders on you, dont worry that nice man Boris said he'd fix it now you have a bite of that turnip and chant Easiest Trade Deal in History to calm yourself down
