To think Macron is ridiculous

These poor lorry drivers are very isolated anyway due to the nature of their jobs. The chances of them catching this new super strain and transmitting it are even slimmer than most people’s very slim chances. Macron’s decision to close the border is a hysterical overreaction and no doubt politically (Brexit) motivated. Open the borders and let them through!

@jasjas1973

Macron is President of france, he has never before shown he is prone to tantrums.

I have changed my view slightly in that he has probably overreacted, however, i'd rather the UK did that in regard to the new S.African strain, we are just asking people to isolate when they arrive in the UK, allowed to use public transport etc on their way to a hotel or a house where they could well be in contact with others who do not have to isolate... pathetic really.

That was my first thought but tbh its going to be IMPOSSIBLE to mitigate against, it's even in Australia!

Interesting article on bbc news about Singapore and their success- they have complete compliance on mask wearing and a draconian but very effective test and trace.

Dido Harding and the anti mask brigade here have a lot to answer for

BolloxtoGender · 23/12/2020 17:13

Even the guardian calls it a ‘blockade’.

chomalungma · 23/12/2020 17:23

I wonder what the Daily Express thinks?

Apparently MACRON CAVES in to BRITAIN. Or something like that.

You need the capitals when quoting the EXPRESS

chomalungma · 23/12/2020 17:27

According to the Express

"Nigel Farage FURY as French warship ‘enters UK waters’: ‘Macron still flexing his muscles"

jasjas1973 · 23/12/2020 17:36

Just heard the UK will stop all flights from SA, if true one of the first proactive things the Govt has done.

Thats the express that even Facebook label as fake news....
ancientgran · 23/12/2020 20:23

Farage would be the first to close the borders if thousands of lorries were coming here with the risk of the drivers having a new, more dangerous version of the virus.

The bit I can't understand is why Grant Shapps looks so happy about it. Every interview I've seen he's looked like he just won the lottery. To misquote a film, "I'll have what he's having."

Blibbyblobby · 24/12/2020 09:55
@JingsMahBucket It’s pathetic to watch people who I assume live in the UK denigrating the country that they are lucky to call their home.
People who truly want the best for their country and fellow citizens take an honest look at what is good and bad, acknowledge their country's failings and roll up their sleeves to make it better.

Castiel07 · 24/12/2020 10:07

I did just read on the BBC that French firefighters have come over to help with testing.
I think if we need to defeat this virus it needs to be all Counties working together.

Dongdingdong · 24/12/2020 10:19

The problem is that at Dover all the freight is accompanied. That's tens of thousands of people a day crossing the border. That is by any definition a "general movement of people".

@Mistigri what is your source for this information please? I read that 41% of freight at Dover is unaccompanied.

@Mistigri on closer inspection, apologies - you are in fact correct!

Spot on

Or rather this was my idea of patriotism pre 2016, since 2016 Ive been told to go back to my own country, that i am a traitor and if i dont like ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELEY everything about the uk/government that i should leave the country

Soooooo....

Its a bit depressing we can't quickly test 8000 people.

Hardly fills me with hope we can vaccinate 20m people in the next few months.

willsantausesantatize · 24/12/2020 10:43

Those poor drivers won't be home in time for Christmas will they?
I feel so sorry for them. Miserable.
