What's the logic behind booking tests?

DH has a cough Sad. I went online last night to book him a test (because he was procrastinating) and hoped he might get a slot at the test centre which is within walking distance of where we live. At first it showed that the nearest drive-in place was at a centre around a mile away, he was OK with that, so I proceeded with the booking, whereupon the nearest drive-in place suddenly changed to over 20 miles away. Started looking into walk-in centres, they could offer one 4 miles away which had slots available all morning, so we opted for that on the basis that I could drive him and wait. It turned out to be really difficult to find, eventually DH noticed a marquee across a rather muddy field which turned out to be the centre (there were no signs). Goodness knows how people feeling really ill manage. He said it was nearly empty at 9 a.m. and the same when he left.

It's difficult to believe that there were really no closer available test centres if this one was so empty, and for what it's worth whenever I walk past the one near us it's incredibly quiet. In particular I don't understand why there were apparently a number of close-by places when I first logged on but they suddenly disappeared part way through the process.

Still, fingers crossed for the test result.

Bump. Does anyone know why the online booking system offers you some reasonably sensible venue only to change it to something much more difficult to access when you book?

I'm not sure about changing part way through, but when I had to book one for DD I was first offered 45 miles away, I kept checking and the number of available tests was going down. It then offered me one 30 miles away, once that had filled it offered me a local test site.

Ridiculous system.
