I someone say on the restrictions thread someone asked for details on common transmission on Coronavirus so just wondering how do you think you caught it?

OP posts:

Caught it at school from small child who had a temperature and was coughing, had to wait with child for half an hour before parents could come to collect. I had COVID badly, I believe because I had a heavy 'viral load' from having to wait with the child.
Those who maintain children, especially small children, don't really pass the virus on are very wrong...and look at the number of teachers who say they caught it at school. About time the government took some notice of this....

On the 2nd of december i was admited to hospital with stomach pains turns out i had kidney stones i was admited to scunthorpe hosptal were for 5 days they sedated me to see if they would pass naturaly, but they never so i had a stent fitted i was tested ones for corana in grimsby and then 3 other times in scunthorpe,i was discharged on the 8th december.I had my last corana virus test on the 7th dec and got results through on the 9th that ive tested positive for it so i picked it up in hospital,im now very frightened as hosptal is ringing me tomorrow with new appointment in the next few days to have stent removed so scared il get it again.

My DD caught it from school. I’m vunerable do other than allowing them to go to school we both work from home and haven’t left the house in months. Our logic was that there would be no way we’d be the first in the school to get it so would pull the kids out as soon as there was a positive case. Well, we were wrong and our DD (4) tested positive last week, she’s better now but my other DD (7) is bad. We are waiting for it to grab us. She had the first confirmed case in the school but given how mild her symptoms are I’m not surprised AT ALL. No one would bother testing for what she had, I just had a hunch and am paranoid with our situation. I wish to god I’d have gone with my gut and taken them out of school.

Jenny4235 · 21/12/2020 06:01

@Grimsby gosh I’m so sorry to read this, what a worry for you on top of the surgery. How were you with it? I hope you’re okay now Flowers

lovelemoncurd · 21/12/2020 06:03

Daughter came back from ski trip from Austria beginning of March. From her.

It's simple to work out where you caught it when not many others have caught it.

Jenny4235 · 21/12/2020 06:12

@FiggyPuddingFiend

Almost certainly from school, I'm a secondary teacher - we've had lots of cases and lots of students who are ill but with non-testable symptoms (headache, upset stomach, sore throat, fatigue, feels unwell)
Really interesting you’ve said this because my DD didn’t have the 3 main symptoms, she had a brief cough (as in 2 minutes) day 1, tiny area of rash on her face day 2, then stomach pains on day 3... nothing really ever progressed but all of these would be totally overlooked in a normal scenario and even with this. My other DD is suffering stomach ache and runny nose as her main two symtoms too... they should be changing the symptom checker, especially for children.
thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/12/2020 06:14

I am convinced I caught it in work (school), however I was not in school within 48 hours of my symptoms starting. In fact, it was 7 days before a mild head cold started, and 9 days before my actual testable CV19 symptoms (loss of sense of smell) started.

The reason I am convinced is that a) I didn't go anywhere else, 2) every single other person in my office caught it within 4/5 days of me (I was last). The dFE wouldn't agree to isolate me despite the fact that 4 people I work closely with had it and no one else. They say we coincidentally caught it independently at exactly the same time.

As a result, I was in school, I took down 2 SLT and several teachers as close contacts, could have potentially infected my mum and childminder plus my kids went into school for 2 days until finally I lost my sense of smell and then I isolated.

I think people underestimate just how good this virus is at getting into hosts and staying on surfaces. Just wearing a mask isn't going to protect you if you then continually touch the mask or don't wash it after each time you have been out.

It's not just from people breaking rules or close proximity, ventilation has been shown to be a big contributor as well hence the open your windows message. Think about about a pan with boiling water and a lid with holes on..... Majority of steam stays within the pan but a small bit does escape. This doesn't make much difference in 5 minutes but half an hour or more with no extraction or open window and the windows start to steam etc. Same thing for being indoors at places with numerous other people and not great ventilation. Masks only stop large droplets not the small ones.

The government is right in that as people have "learnt" to live with the virus a large majority have relaxed and forget the basics. They also think if wearing a mask they are magically protected which is incorrect it stops large droplets unless it's an FFP3 which you don't want to wear for long periods (ask any medic on a covid ward) and has to be disposed of each use.

Basically best way to avoid it is be outside as much as you can rather than indoors with strangers where possible and think about glitter on every surface you touch if you do have to be indoors

Grimsby · 21/12/2020 06:20

@Jenny4235 i think because i was in so much pain with the kidney stones i was on morphine for days when they finally discharged me after my op, i slept solid in bed for 6 days and was very poorly my bed was constanly wet through and my pillow and i mean soaked i had a slight caugh bt nothing major and the loosing my taste part came about 8 days later so i dont no how bad it was because of the kidney situation going on aswel oh i live in a 2 bedroom flat with my boyfriend and hes just tested negatve we slept in separate bedrooms and avoided each other like the plague and it worked.

@MythicalBiologicalFennel

Very interesting thread. Most people seem to have caught it from schools, their children or work. This goes against both

the official message that points the blame at "the home" or pubs / restaurants.

The undercurrent on MN that transmission is due to Other People being selfish and stupid and flouting the rules (going on holiday abroad, meeting people outside their bubble etc).

Because that’s easier to deal with than the alternative I.e. it’s far too easy to catch and government isn’t doing enough to protect us.
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/12/2020 06:29

None of us have had it to our knowledge.
No one at DHs work has had it... This was a busy office that has worked throughout the whole of the past 9months. At one point the only precaution they could make was moving the desks slightly.

Lots of them were ill December-March time. As were our daughters. But it is just as likely to have a bad cold. (Our youngest DD had a cough from December to May. She has a history of lung infections though, so a lingering cough wasn't that unusual for her)

kowari · 21/12/2020 06:41

In Wetherspoons the Friday before lockdown.

CarinaMarina · 21/12/2020 07:01

The only places I'd been in the 7 days prior to falling ill were the vets (stood outside, staff/pet owners wearing masks), the chippy (no-one in there, staff/customers wearing masks), a hair salon for 3 hours (packed and absolute chaos with staff not using visors/masks properly) and the supermarket (paramedics told me supermarkets are the hotbeds of infection).

So I'd say Sainsburys or the hairdressers...but who knows. DH showed symptoms about 7 days after me, so he presumably got it from me. I was really ill for 14 days, he felt a bit off for 3 days.

This!

I am extremely careful. I may have caught it from work but I clean my area myself at the start of each day then wash my hands. I wear a medical grade face mask unless eating. I hand wash and gel constantly. I clean the toilet and taps etc before and after use. And yet I still caught it.

Missfelipe · 21/12/2020 12:53

Unfortunately are I believe and know that people are breaking the rules but are unlikely to admit having done so to the likes of track and trace...I also know a lot of people who are in denial about whether they are following the rules and then claim that they must have caught it in ‘x’....so while I think a lot are catching it via work and schools there’s a lot of hidden nonsense going on which is exacerbating matters.

I’ve always said that, yes, the people you are in closest contact with for the longest periods - family - are most likely to give it to you but that’s an incomplete answer. Where did they catch it to bring it home? That’s what needs sorting. And same with schools - it got in there from somewhere. So I think the rule flouting and travelling did/do play a part, but it’s not something you can blame on any one thing really. That’s a bit incoherent. Hope it makes sense.
Jeremyironseverything · 21/12/2020 13:01

School definitely. Then I passed it on to two of my family.

sleepwouldbenice · 21/12/2020 13:10

About half the people I know about have said they got it from not social distancing. Various circumstances, from a funeral to just plain socialising

Chaotic45 · 21/12/2020 13:11

DH tested positive last week. He works in retail. All 20 of his colleagues have now tested positive. We were initially baffled as they had tight Covid secure Confused measures in place, but now think the lack of natural ventilation was probably the issue.

So far DC and I are fine, we've been tested several times (have been given home tests) and negative so far.

DH is isolating in our bedroom, although if another thread is to be believed this is a cruel and OTT approach.

IfIHadAHeart · 21/12/2020 13:11

I caught it at work (police). A colleague tested positive a week before I did, we are unable to socially distance in the car 🤷🏼‍♀️

TinselToedElf · 21/12/2020 14:15

I think from dd when she came home from uni. She had symptoms before I did.

DailyPotion · 21/12/2020 14:17

Absolutely no idea. I've been so careful with the social distancing and hand washing and at the time I caught it knew no one else who had it.

It definitely didn't spread to me because of rule breaking.

LockdownSanta · 21/12/2020 14:25

From my DH who came back from a trip to the Far East with a nasty flu bug, then about 10 days later I came down with it and my DC got it too.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 21/12/2020 15:02

IF dd had it in march it would have been from college

Definitely not OTT or cruel as long as your checking through the door/via phone that he's not getting worse!

Yes lack of ventilation or ventilation type is heavily linked especially to workplace outbreaks. They don't really stress this too much in England (they do a bit more about is it essential to be inside in places) probably due to the economic balance with consumer confidence.
