Vaccination for elderly & CEV, herd immunity for everyone else

CollateralDamage1 · 20/12/2020 19:02

It's obviously the option chosen by our government. I've not heard of any mass vaccination programmes for everyone else yet have you? As a key worker I feel that my life is collateral and if I die or suffer badly it's half expected and is seen by our government as for the greater good of our country. It's totally shit. They'd never openly admit this though.

The vaccine will be available for everyone, it's just in order of priority www.standard.co.uk/news/health/who-will-get-coronavirus-vaccine-first-b61465.html

Gingernaut · 20/12/2020 19:10

I'm sixth in line with asthma.

Otherwise I'd be ninth in line (over 50)

Nc135 · 20/12/2020 19:12

@CollateralDamage1 they can’t vaccinate everyone at once so they are making priority choices. I think it is highly sensible to start with over 80s and care home workers as they are more likely to need hospital treatment. And we are trying to protect the NHS. Who would you have prioritised first?

Windyone · 20/12/2020 19:12

@ofwarren I’m in Scotland and the Pfizer vaccine is not being given to the people on that list you posted. Anyone getting it in their GP surgeries will have to wait for a vaccine that is easier to distribute. I don’t know why the government is not making this clear. No other vaccine has been approved in the UK.

Nc135 · 20/12/2020 19:13

Care home workers obviously not higher hospital treatment but because they are caring for those who are.

ofwarren · 20/12/2020 19:17

@Windyone
The OP is saying that people without health problems will have to rely on herd immunity when this isn't the case.
The link I shared was to show there is a priority system and by the time it comes to "our turn" there will be more than one vaccine. The Oxford one is expected before new year.

motherrunner · 20/12/2020 19:19

Yup. I’m a mid 40s secondary school teacher. Feel my life is worthless.

whatswithtodaytoday · 20/12/2020 19:20

The Oxford vaccine is expected to be approved next week - that will be the vaccine most people get. There are large-scale plans in place, but they can't start yet because it's not approved.

Meanwhile they're prioritising the old and NHS workers, which is sensible.

Nc135 · 20/12/2020 19:21

@motherrunner oh grow up.

PleasantVille · 20/12/2020 19:22

Obviously there can't be any definite timings but there's been a timetable for vaccinations for a large number of people for a while

Has that now been cancelled?

If we can believe the rumours a 2nd vaccine will be approved in the not too distant future which will hopefully speed things up.

I haven't heard that we're relying on herd immunity but so much has changed in the past day I could have missed it

CollateralDamage1 · 20/12/2020 19:22

It'll be herd immunity basically until the next flu season i.e. September... I doubt even by then we'll all be vaccinated.

You have vaccines chasing down on age from the top and herd immunity going up via schools from the bottom (youngest age).

I said nothing about the priority being wrong. But thinking about it all front line facing key workers should get the vaccine earlier in my opinion.

Not so much relying on it. But the way things are going we might achieve herd immunity due to the sheer amount of people that get infected this winter.

SandysMam · 20/12/2020 19:25

If you have had it, do you still need the vaccine or do you then wait until next round IYSWIM? I take it it’s like the flu jab where you will need to every year?

FourTeaFallOut · 20/12/2020 19:25

Earlier than who?

SandysMam · 20/12/2020 19:26

Just thinking there might be a big chunk of people who don’t actually need the jab because they have had Covid already this season?

MickeyMouseEars · 20/12/2020 19:29

From what I understand, the initial order for the Pfizer vaccine will cover a certain amount of elderly and CEV but I guess any 'new' orders will take time to produce while other countries have their initial allocation fulfilled. I think if/when the Oxford vaccine is approved we will manage to get the majority of the adult population vaccinated.

CollateralDamage1 · 20/12/2020 19:29

@Dawnlassie

Exactly. But my opinion is this was an expected route, but government will never admit it.

We will need a vaccine regardless because there are two strains so if you've had one you could still catch the other.

We will need seasonal vaccines because it mutates.

OP posts:
Porseb · 20/12/2020 19:33

I think once this programme of vaccination is complete - it will get added to the annual programme of seasonal vaccination like flu but not everyone gets the flu vaccine.

ekidmxcl · 20/12/2020 19:42

I’m not sure why the slowness of this vaccination process is not reported more and why there isn’t more outrage over it.

There has to be a better way than people having to make appointments at GP surgeries. It should be a priority to get millions vaccinated quickly.

People are going to die because of this fucking pathetically slow roll out.

They could park the freezer trucks up in the car parks of big supermarkets and people could queue in cars and get jabbed through the windows. Surely someone with some power can think of a solution.

Lumene · 20/12/2020 19:49

We are the first country in the world to vaccinate people with a properly scrutinised and approved vaccine.

It will be a huge logistical task to get everyone vaccinated and I’m sure the UK will find ways to fuck up large chunks of the process along the way.

But still, we have a vaccine, more viable vaccines appear to be on the way, and I know of one 85 year old who has already had theirs. I would say we are doing OK so far overall.

herecomestheSon · 20/12/2020 19:52

I am a CEV parent. Many of us, especially with children in secondary school, feel that we are being regarded as expendable collateral.

CollateralDamage1 · 20/12/2020 19:56

My point exactly. It really is herd immunity from the bottom (age wise), vaccines from the top (age wise) and if you're a key worker in the middle you're also fucked and therefore 'collateral'.

OP posts:
Haenow · 20/12/2020 19:57

It’s been said over and over again that age is the single biggest factor for mortality and morbidity, hence why it’s far more important to vaccinate the older people before you. @motherrunner

MorrisZapp · 20/12/2020 19:59

Embarrassing.

I’m in the same position but statistically, older people are at higher risk of hospitalisation and death even compared to people who are CEV. People need to take a pragmatic approach.
