Vaccination for elderly & CEV, herd immunity for everyone else

CollateralDamage1 · 20/12/2020 19:02

It's obviously the option chosen by our government. I've not heard of any mass vaccination programmes for everyone else yet have you? As a key worker I feel that my life is collateral and if I die or suffer badly it's half expected and is seen by our government as for the greater good of our country. It's totally shit. They'd never openly admit this though.

Nice to see the pointy elbows are back out again. Hmm

Lots of my NHS friends have had theirs, though not 88 year old MIL, they will do hers when she is actually discharged from hospital, rather than now when she is on the ward and therefore at greater risk, seems strange, but oh well.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 21/12/2020 08:09

@expulsocorona

@Arboria asthmatics haven't been removed from the list. Any asthmatic who is usually entitled to the flu vaccine is group 6 for the Covid vaccine.

Not true I'm afraid. People with mild/moderate asthma get the flu vaccine but they have been removed from the CV list (group 6) for the vaccine

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 21/12/2020 08:19

I am taking my healthy 80 year old DM for her first dose today. Age is her only known risk factor.

I was really surprised how quickly she got her appointment, I think they're doing a fantastic job.

AnnaMagnani · 21/12/2020 08:25

I had mine yesterday and happily drove 2 hours at 30 mins notice to have it and back again - booked near my place of work and I travel for work.

Sadly I discovered my clinically vulnerable elderly mum can't have it as she has anaphylaxis - fingers crossed the Oxford vaccine will be OK for her.

ihearttc · 21/12/2020 08:28

My parents are both over 80 and got a phone call to have theirs done over a week ago so they are definitely rolling it out. My Dad actually declined and said he’d rather wait for the Oxford one!

Haenow · 21/12/2020 11:03

@CollateralDamage1

Gotta love the Tory bots on here.... Good to know where the tax payments went Hmm
I couldn’t be less of a Tory if I tried. I think BoJo is a terrible ‘leader’ and I am appalled at how many vulnerable people have been ignored during this pandemic, I just don’t agree with your views on this topic. Can you not challenge my views in a better way? I’m always up for a debate but pithy little remarks like ‘Tory Bot’ are silly.
CollateralDamage1 · 21/12/2020 11:33

I have no idea what's happened to people on MN but if its a snapshot at the general population God help us 😂

A relative had theirs last night at a clinic run by GPs.

She works in social care and is extremely grateful to receive it on a Sunday evening when NHS staff must be on their knees with work, personal stresses and fending off miserable people criticising them for not working harder and faster.

Once she's had the second dose, she'll be better equipped to support vulnerable people in their home, possibly preventing them from requiring hospital care.

@ExpulsoCorona I'm afraid to say that your information is out of date and my original post was correct. Clinically vulnerable asthmatics, also known as moderate asthmatics - who as you say are entitled to the flu jab - were on the original vaccination priority list. However, the list was updated at the start of December and now this group has been totally removed from the vaccination priority list. Those under 50 now have to wait their turn with the rest of the healthy population.

Now, only severe asthmatics who take systemic steroids - in other words, those who are clinically extremely vulnerable due to their asthma - remain on the vaccination priority list.

There have been threads and news articles about it.

I, for one, am glad the most vulnerable are being prioritised. I accept that, despite being CEV, I am young and therefore, still not as high risk. Of course I desperately want the vaccine and I want it now but I’m trying to be sensible and pragmatic. It’s reassuring to know I’m not highly like to die.

YellowPostItPad · 21/12/2020 14:47

Yup. I’m a mid 40s secondary school teacher. Feel my life is worthless.
Write to your MP. I believe vaccines for teachers are being considered. The more pressure the more likely it will happen.

What do you mean? God help us because people don’t agree with you?You keep sniping that people have missed your point, or ‘Tory bots’ but you haven’t answered, earlier than who? What kind of ‘key worker’ are you anyway? Front line health workers are being vaccinated.
ExpulsoCorona · 21/12/2020 17:03

@Arboria As an asthmatic if you are prescribed a steroid inhaler you are definitely in group 6. I'm a GP. We have our lists for vaccination. We have done our over 80s and are waiting for the next lot of vaccine to move on to the next groups.

Arboria · 21/12/2020 17:16

"Current priority list group 6: All individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality. The risk groups identified by the committee are set out below:"

"Chronic respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis and severe asthma. "

This is then defined in the Green Book further: "Individuals with a severe lung condition, including those with asthma that requires continuous or repeated use of systemic steroids or with previous exacerbations requiring hospital admission. "

Inhalers are not systemic steroids. As a GP, @ExpulsoCorona, your practice must be going above and beyond the list, as indeed you are allowed to do. However, it is no longer JCVI policy that clinically vulnerable moderate asthmatics are in the Group 6 for vaccination. Truly. Have a Google Smile

ExpulsoCorona · 21/12/2020 17:35

@Arboria I don't need to google. Let's revisit this thread in a couple of months, hopefully you'll be reassured by then.

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel

Anyone who thinks we are being slow have a look at this chart and compare our progress with our rest of the world

international vaccination tracker

Excellent link, thank you. I wonder if the graph will autoscale, i.e. will the categories shift as more vaccinations are given? I expect so.
FuzzyPuffling · 21/12/2020 18:06

We have done our over 80s and are waiting for the next lot of vaccine to move on to the next groups.

If you've done your over 80s won't you have to wait quite a while for the next lot of vaccine until the rest of the country has caught up? (Or almost caught up) Otherwise what's the point of the priority system?

( For comparison, here the group of practices round me have has 975 vaccines for 3400 over 80s plus healthcare staff. We have a high percentage of older people here)

IrmaFayLear · 21/12/2020 18:19

Herecomesthesun is an absolute stuck record. Fgs teach your dc at home and surrender the school place! No wonder they told you to bugger off. There can’t be special rules for individuals.

Incidentally I am cev and can quite relate to your position but still think you are being unreasonable, and especially going on about the one same issue for months on end, hoping to catch a new batch of posters who haven’t had their ears burned off.

SlothWithACloth · 21/12/2020 18:23

Well if herd immunity is a thing then I’ve done my bit. I’m happy to have suffered with covid if I’m now immune and helping the herd.
Though I doubt immunity is a thing, by all accounts.

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel
Thanks for posting that link - interestingly it stated 350k had been vaccinated by the 19th December, but today Boris stated 500k had been vaccinated. Either Boris is lying (not unheard of) or that’s a massive scale up in 2 days. If it is, that’s great progress and the figures are going in the right direction!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/12/2020 19:18

Crazycatlady83, I think the data is being released so randomly and unsystematically that I wouldn’t want to assume anything about how long it took to get from 350k to 500k (550k according to another poster who hasn’t cited her sources). However it is definitely going in the right direction Smile Now we just need to keep our fingers crossed the progress is sustained.

Heffle · 21/12/2020 19:33

I don’t really understand this OP, are you elderly or CEV or NHS/social care? If so, contact your GP or employer. Why do you think you will die if you get it?

On the Covid vaccine calculator (not accurate or govt endorsed) there were 30 million people in front of me, as I’m not on the list, and I thought ‘fair enough’. I’m a key worker by some accounts, but not NHS/care.

If you are on the list, well it’s a case of how many million are in front, as there are less than a million doses in country, and waiting and working out from there, I think.

Kazzyhoward · 21/12/2020 19:45

@motherrunner

Yup. I’m a mid 40s secondary school teacher. Feel my life is worthless.
Why? Unless you are seriously overweight or have other serious health issues, the chances are about 99.9% that you'd be fine if you caught it. That's why it's the oldest and clinically extremely vulnerable who are being prioritised - the ones most likely to die or need hospitalisation if they caught it.

My MIL's town started doing vaccinations on Saturday. Our town is being done by the GP surgeries and are expected to start on 2 January. So it seems more and more vaccination centres are being opened up everyday. So, an increase from 350k to 500k seems entirely possible if lots started in the last few days (as seems to be the case).
