Just posted on another thread and I thought I'd give people a heads up to those that want to stay safe and keep others safe.

Someone we know was a fool and took a lift with a workmate as their other half was using the car. This person shared a car trip to work for 7 minutes max. Both of the fools did not wear a mask or open a window.
The driver then rang the person we knew a couple of days latter telling her that they had been diagonsed with Covid as their husband had it and that's why she took the test. So the person we know took the test and got a postive result.

This person is 65, working, no other medical problems. 7 days in from sharing the car they have no symptoms which is good. But you can become ill on the 10th/11th day from what I read or it gets worse.

As it's been a week and no symptoms, things are looking up.

I hope this thread helps and you are now more aware how easy Covid passes from person to person in an enclosed environment within a few minutes and both had no symptoms.

It is scary but hopefully taking precations, not sharing a car with strangers and when you do wear a mask, open windows, talk as little as possible and keep journeys small as possible may hopefully help all.

OP posts:
PoulePouletteEternellement · 20/12/2020 12:28

But that isn't really an example of passing it on 'easily'; those two people almost went out of their way to share and transmit every possible virus between them.

Hope they respectively recover and stay well.

Keepdistance · 20/12/2020 12:35

Agree op. Ive seen people having a play date and putting the other person's kid in their car.
And GP who didnt want to walk in the rain so driving to pick up GC from school.
Play dates if they wont stop having them, stay outside out of people's homes and cars.

DianaT1969 · 20/12/2020 12:43

I agree that it seems likely that 7 minutes in an enclosed car would be enough time to transmit it. I was concerned when I took the bus or tube and was enclosed with the same people for 10 minutes plus. However, you said they were both going to work. I'm not sure you can pinpoint that as the moment of contact and transmission if they both spent time with other colleagues/customers in a workplace later.

MzHz · 20/12/2020 12:45

My oh ex wanted his Dd from previous relationship to collect their youngest dd and bring her down to ours. T4 to T2.

Small car, couple of hours in the car, deffo no masks, both sets of households having flouted rules for months...

Yeah right.

Ain’t happening. Jabs first...

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/12/2020 12:49

That’s not an example Confused. Nothing has happened.

Huugi · 20/12/2020 12:52

Doesn't really explain why 80% of people living with someone with covid do not get the virus. Transmission rate is around 20% for other household members, 33% for spouses/partners presumably sharing a bed. Likewise I was working in very close prolonged contact with a colleague who tested positive the next day and I didn't get the virus. Think he's just been unlucky.

Vivana · 20/12/2020 12:54

This is why I don't get why taxi drivers don't have to wear a mask and passangers do.

JacobReesMogadishu · 20/12/2020 12:55

How did they get tests with no symptoms?

Butterymuffin · 20/12/2020 12:56

No it doesn't explain it @Huugi, but what it shows is that even with very time limited contact, it's possible to catch it, and that some people will be the unlucky ones who catch it. And we just don't know who they are, so everyone's at risk. We can't say 'younger people are fine' because some young people have caught it and died. There's no test to sift the unlucky from the lucky.

MistletoeandGin · 20/12/2020 12:57

So two people sat in an enclosed, unventilated space together with no masks, and one caught something from the other.
I’m not sure why that’s news.

titchy · 20/12/2020 12:58

How on earth do you know that it was that 7 minute journey that was responsible for the transmission? Why not the corner shop, the workplace, the bus stop, the postman. Hmm

dementedpixie · 20/12/2020 13:02

Of course it spreads easily in an enclosed unventilated space like a car. That's why you're advised not to car share and if you do you should wear masks, open windows and sit as far from each other as possible

AnneLovesGilbert · 20/12/2020 13:04

Wondering what OP thought she was achieving here.
trappedsincesundaymorn · 20/12/2020 13:06

Well the other side of the coin is that mum had covid, died and dad had not so much as a sneeze, despite being with her 24/7 as her carer. He had an antibody test a few months ago to see if he had passed it on to mum without knowing. It came up negative, so never had it at all.

Dillo10 · 20/12/2020 13:09

This is literally an example that Covid doesn't spread that easily ConfusedGrin

Dillo10 · 20/12/2020 13:10

What I mean by that is... They were in an enclosed space and not wearing masks

Jrobhatch29 · 20/12/2020 13:10

Wow thanks OP. I had no idea you could catch it in an unventilated space with no masks with another person. What a revelation!

FindHungrySamurai · 20/12/2020 13:15

I honestly think that if you didn’t realise that sitting next to each other chatting in a car with the windows closed and no masks was a likely transmission scenario then there’s no hope for you.

What’s worrying me is the possibility that with this new strain lots of things which most of us have spent 9 months accepting as very very low risk, like jogging past someone unmasked on a pavement, or having a quick chat with a neighbour at a doorway from a distance of 2 metres as you borrow their drill or exchanging a few words with the barista at an outdoor coffee stall or standing slightly closer than 2 metres in a supermarket might perhaps now present a significant risk.

FreeFallingFree · 20/12/2020 13:17

I would understand if this had been posted in Feb 2020, but as it's now December it feels rather redundant?

FindHungrySamurai · 20/12/2020 13:18

This useful rule of thumb calculator puts it pretty firmly in the red.

Exactly ^
madcatladyforever · 20/12/2020 13:19

Its spreading like wildfire at work (NHS) half of our staff are off with it and we're in a tier 2 area.
Last time nobody had it.
So far I've been ok, I've stayed in my clinic room, I email colleagues or talk to them 2 meters away, my windows are cracked open, my hands are red raw from washing them. I will only allow one other person i.e my patient in my room.
I have been carefully watching and hand washing doesn't seem to be a priority for a lot of people.

IrenetheQuaint · 20/12/2020 13:23

Yes exactly. This is a massive concern IMO. Hopefully we will get more detailed information about how the new strain spreads soon.
JinglingHellsBells · 20/12/2020 13:24

. This person shared a car trip to work for 7 minutes max. Both of the fools did not wear a mask or open a window.

Given this is one of the classic ways to catch Covid- small space, no ventilation, 2 strangers inches apart - it's not exactly an example of 'easy'.

it's absolutely predictable!

Moondust001 · 20/12/2020 13:25

Sigh. Am I the only person who thinks there should be a daily maximum quota of threads that say "scary- you can catch Covid" or "did you know that people transmit Covid"?
