If this new strain is so serous

Why can people meet at Xmas in tiers 1 2 and 3.?
I feel Xmas rules should have been blanket however even mark drakeford said covid is not the only harm so Wales allowed meet Xmas day only why did Boris not say the same fir tier 4 south east?

Wales has higher cases than London.

This new varient primarily London south east.
Reported 18 cases Scotland so they sensibly shutting Borders.
Wales has cases don't know how many.
See lots people leaving London tonight is it too late to contain the virus?
I'm baffled how it made its way to Wales ir Scotland but by passes south west and north east?

Why can people travel abroad.

I assume waiting longer on total lockdown keeps economy showing
Shops are rammed
Schools broken up.
We just got downgraded tier 2 so lots exited about pubs and restaurants.

They don't seem seem be controlling food retail shops they a absolute shit show.
Went to takeaway tonight no social 2 metre distancing half customers and counter staff no masks.

My husband non essential retail and like Many retailers he has prepare boxing day sales onwards.
Won't that cause spike in areas 1 to 3?

I feel like we can't plan.
Finishing Xmas shopping Monday and food late on Xmas eve.
Feel sorry for those in tier 4, Wales and Scotland.
I guess they still have home bargains b&m and lidls/ aldi for non food.
Doesn't seem like delivery network can cope with the strain.

There are a lot of unexplained things like why is Peterborough in Tier 4 if it is because of the new strain of virus, has the virus just descended there and bypassed all the other places around it, surely it should be in tier 3 like Lincolnshire. I was really shocked to see this as it is a neighbouring city to us.

Ejb86 · 20/12/2020 07:20

Theres plenty of time! He'll tell us on Christmas Day!

Wilkolampshade · 20/12/2020 07:26

@LovinLen I wonder if it's based on Peterborough being on thee direct travel corridor to London, as a town many people commute to and from. Lincoln, despite being v near has no direct London trains, you have to change at Newark, so never became as developed as a commuter town.

Well, people aren’t travelling on foot. Given that the advice for months has been to avoid public transport, most people will be using cars to get to Wales and Scotland. Given that there’s only a handful of known variant cases in Scotland it’s quite possible that it’s arrived via that route.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/12/2020 07:33

We will be locked down in January so not long to wait. Sad

DontBeShelfish · 20/12/2020 07:38

Wales is in lockdown, they went in at midnight last night.

I don’t think it’s bypassed the south west and north east. The briefing talked about how it’s prevalent in the south east but not that there aren’t any cases at all outside of that. As far as I know, Scotland is the only place that has given exact numbers about cases of the new strain. I would assume some of the cases outside the south east are the new strain, but numbers are low so they’re not being so cautious. Scotland have taken a different approach.

DivGirl · 20/12/2020 07:50

Scotland hasn’t shut the borders, you’re just not allowed to travel to or from England. I could still fly to Prague if I wanted.

The parts of England with high cases are already in lockdown, with everywhere else joining next week. Seems sensible.

Illy605 · 20/12/2020 08:00

We will be locked down after Christmas without a doubt. Too many people will be flouting the rules over Christmas and especially New Year and we’ll all pay the price come mid January.

This ^^ So many selfish people only thinking of their wants not the big picture. No doubt plenty of them will be moaning when there are more job losses, schools close etc.

Many will just likely continue to do what they want in lockdown too.

I think its economic few more extra days retail and hospitality trading other areas.
However will jan sales happen in tier 2 and 3?
Husband hates working boxing day.
Last lockdown meant half wages so financially I like work out where we are as hes works non essential retail.

I worry school non tier 4 areas returning are at greater risks as Xmas meeting was still permitted.

I thought tier 4 south east was stop this new varient spreading.
Even if they travelled Wales or Scotland on the car they may have used service station on route.
Many fly of take train up to Scotland.

This is probably right Sad
likeamillpond · 20/12/2020 08:50

But it is everywhere.
Just In small numbers.
Nbut now that all those people disregarded CWs advice and crammed the stations and left London, it will have been seeded even more places.
Thanks to selfish gits.
Rest assured it will spread like wildfire and we are more or less guaranteed a nationwide lockdown beg. January.

PandaBearCub · 20/12/2020 10:18

NW England has been in lockdown since March. Hospitality sector completely shut. Non-essential shops only very recently re-opened. No meeting up with families. London has had it easy so far. If this new strain is so bad then why is public transport and airports still running? Why are people allowed to fly in and out of the UK?

Coasterfan · 20/12/2020 10:27

I think tier 4 for everyone will be announced at the next review on 30th December.
