Things are just getting worse and worse and January is going to be hell

I think it's really sad and worrying to see how many people are convinced that the only reason this has happened is because 'other people' have done something wrong and 'selfish' - it's turned people against each other so horribly

Couldn't agree more. We're trying to control an incredibly infectious virus that (apparently) spreads asymptomatically. It's like trying to hold back a tide. The people I know who've tested positive (and therefore have likely spread the virus) are not "covidiots", they're teachers, nurses and key workers doing their jobs. We need to stop with the blame game now.

@MrDarcysMa

Genuinely wondering with the new strain if this is going to be the end of humanity. Like in the films.
Actually , this is how I feel today! I've not said it in real life as i will be told I'm over reacting. I know it's not the end of the world but something weird is going on.

I think it's unlikely, viruses mutate - it's just what they do. The flu mutated all the time yet we still manage to have a pretty effective vaccine. no reason this wont be the same, it'll just take time to get there.
Hearwego · 19/12/2020 19:59

Boris has been told to take action now or have hospitals full over Christmas and New Year. I really do think that this decision wasn’t taken lightly, how many PMs have had to in a sense cancel Christmas?... Let’s face is, that’s what’s happened.
But no one can surely be surprised? We’re in the winter now and things will get worse in January.
There is a vaccine, and people are having it. It’ll take time. Sadly until then we have to deal with this shit situation.
I think people will accept this Christmas, but not next year.
Let’s hope by Easter things are really better.

PolloDePrimavera · 19/12/2020 20:03

I think worse than March as then, we had no idea it would go on this long... Well I didn't, I was stupid enough to believe it would be over after a three week lockdown.

Igotjelly · 19/12/2020 20:04

It will pass. One day this will just be a horrible memory.

Icenii · 19/12/2020 20:07

What consumes your mind, controls your life. I really think people need to withdraw with social media and the media. It isn't doing anyone any good. Yes this is terribly bad, but many of us are coming at this from a state of privilege. We just need to keep a level head. The vacinne will help. If not, we make a new one. There is a way out.

Frenchdressing · 19/12/2020 20:10

I feel like We are at the start of the end. I’m quite positive.

namesnamesnamesnames · 19/12/2020 20:12

It's the losing hope that's the worst thing, in March we really were in it together. Through lockdown the weather was bloody great and communities were pulling together. There was hope that it wouldn't last long.

Now, it's all been going on for so long and things keep changing all the time that we really have to force ourselves to find hope. There is some, some people find it extra hard to find.

Frenchdressing · 19/12/2020 20:16

My Dad has his vaccine next week. Made me feel positive

Flaxmeadow · 19/12/2020 20:16

No, but I felt something like that back in March and April. Not "implode" as such, but more how serious the crisis is and how long it will last. The gravity of the situation and how there would be no quick solutions.

What is worse now is the divisions. At least in March there was a sense of community spirit and helping one another. Now not so much

willsantausesantatize · 19/12/2020 20:20

It's all so crappy isn't it?
My friends are angry and upset they can't see their families this year.
I feel for them. Nothing to say is there?
What can anyone do?

Hardbackwriter · 19/12/2020 20:20

I was really naive about it too, but I think the thing is I would just never have believed then that people would accept this level of restriction for so long. I still do find it hard to believe in some ways.
Hearwego · 19/12/2020 20:22

A vaccine is here but it’s the short term and long term damage I’m worried about. The economic damage due to industries being shut down.

willsantausesantatize · 19/12/2020 20:38

Things imploded back in May when our P M refused to sack his special advisor after that terrible press conference for breaking the rules. Others also broke the rules and got away with it and the conspiracy theories started to ramp up.
Then the complacency set in.
Then there was the mini lockdown back in November where people were half hearted about following the rules as schools and shops were still open.
Not to mention all the other things that have gone wrong since the start of the year.
Now this and the whole ' Christmas is cancelled' thing.
It's all very sad actually. :(

Catmads · 19/12/2020 20:39

@MummaBear4321 Flowers

mrshonda · 19/12/2020 20:41

There is hope, there are vaccines and they will begin to make a difference soon. Please don't give up. And this is coming from someone who suffers from depression and severe anxiety, who became suicidal and had a breakdown in summer, has lost 4 relatives this year including my dad, and lost my job a few weeks ago. I haven't hugged another soul since March. If I can keep hoping, you can too.

macaroniinapot · 19/12/2020 20:45

I think this too, and I think it's really sad and worrying to see how many people are convinced that the only reason this has happened is because 'other people' have done something wrong and 'selfish' - it's turned people against each other so horribly.

I couldn’t agree more with this. I worry for what society will be like when the pandemic has gone.

I really believe the end is in sight, that the most vulnerable being vaccinated will bring down hospital admissions. This will coincide with better weather in Spring which also allows us to live more normally and by this time next year, this will be a distant memory.

But it’s terrifying when you hear about mutations etc, because all our eggs are truly in the basket of the vaccine. I don’t think these lockdowns and restrictions will be as well complied with and that will only get worse as time goes on. It has to work out with the vaccination program and soon or the alternatives are just hideous.

missymoomoomoomoomoo · 19/12/2020 20:45

There were lots of people who had Eid cancelled the day before. This is shit but realistically you can see your bubble. No one has to be alone over Christmas.

macaroniinapot · 19/12/2020 20:46

Flowers to everyone struggling and who has been through it

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 19/12/2020 20:46

But I’m concerned the vaccine has dropped out if the news. They’ve done 780000?

There’s something like 25 million need doing. And yet we’re hearing nothing about these.

Dreamylemon · 19/12/2020 20:48

I'm not feeling the vibe of March at all. I was terrified seeing the situation in Italy back in march and everything about the virus was unknown. Although the rates are going up we do have the virus rolling out and the Oxford vaccine is liking hopeful to be approved which will be a real game changer as it can be manufactured in the UK and stress normal vaccines are. We also know more about what the virus does and how to treat it.

The difference is fatigue has set in and like Pp said, we are all running on empty.

I think the government should have been far quicker on each lockdown they have brought in and not let things spiral. I also think they should be open that when virus rates rise they gave to act. All this 'save Christmas' malarkey was always doomed to fail. I appreciate people need hope though and a lot of people are managing one day at a time and may not be able to cope with being told in march that the next 12-18 months are going to be very tough

DecemberDiana · 19/12/2020 20:57

Today feels bleak with the press conferences. And I do think it being physically the darkest time of the year has an effect.

But really I do think things will turn after January.

The first bunch of vaccinated will be protected. Fingers crossed for the Oxford vaccine which will be the start of mass vaccination. An early January start has been mentioned for that.

Flowers for everyone struggling right now.

StealthPolarBear · 19/12/2020 20:58

Thanks everyone and Flowers to everyone, especially Mrs Honda.
I'm in a very good position but as a pp says, just have felt down today.

The Oxford vaccine is planned to be given in football stadia (from what I've read in the papers!)
