As per the title. Having a heated discussion at the moment. Is this the law or just advisory?
Thank you.

This is the transcription of his statement from the gov website

These areas will enter a new tier 4, which will be broadly equivalent to the national restrictions which were in place in England in November.
That means:
Residents in those areas must stay at home, apart from limited exemptions set out in law. Non-essential retail, indoor gyms and leisure facilities, and personal care services must close. People must work from home if they can, but may travel to work if this is not possible, for example in the construction and manufacturing sectors. People should not enter or leave tier 4 areas, and tier 4 residents must not stay overnight away from home. Individuals can only meet one person from another household in an outdoor public space.
Unlike the November national restrictions, communal worship can continue to take place in tier 4 areas.

It's rubbish that they make an announcement with which scant details. We won't know until the legislation is made available. Legislation and guidance often differs greatly.

Squaddiemum7 · 19/12/2020 18:07

I think you can be fined if you are found to be in breach of the COVID rules for your area / tier.

southeastdweller · 19/12/2020 18:08

@MarshaBradyo

Some won’t care about it being law. But majority will
Really? You think most people care about an unenforceable stupid law, with lockdown fatigue kicking in?
MarshaBradyo · 19/12/2020 18:09

South yes I’ve already seen cancellations

Elephant4 · 19/12/2020 18:11

Who is going to enforce these new restrictions?

Akire · 19/12/2020 18:14

Some Police in lockdown have been stopping cars and asking where people are going. Then turning them around if not an essential reason. Easily done via Number plate checking and you are 100 miles from
Home with your whole family in the car.
You could be lucky and get away with it but you risk taking new strain in a tier 4 to an area that doesn’t have it yet.

Twinkie01 · 19/12/2020 18:15

What happens if you are in Tier 4 and can work from home but your boss is saying you have to go in?

DH's team are all in one day each in the Christmas period and he's now receiving a flurry of emails asking if they have to go in. They can all do what they need to from home except New Year's Eve when one thing can't be done from home and DH is happy to drive in. His big boss is saying he expects there to be a presence on the desk everyday.

DebbieFiderer · 19/12/2020 18:18

Yes, it seems plenty of people care about obeying the law - DH just texted me to say loads of people have come back to his supermarket this evening trying to get refunds on the turkeys they bought today

DebbieFiderer · 19/12/2020 18:18

Well maybe not loads, but some anyway

They’ve been stopping in tiny numbers but generally speaking the police can do fuck all.

@Lurkingforawhile

Outside exercise was always unlimited in previous lockdowns. Some idiot ministers made suggestions that were never law or in guidance and the media then repeated it. Made me so Angry
Me too , I don't know why people keep suggesting it too .
EddieBananas · 19/12/2020 18:25

Enforceable in law because it just a LITTLE BIT OF A SERIOUS SITUATION we are in.

For the sake of a few days, we all need to be sensible and hole up at home. Not ideal I know but NHS friends say they are starting to buckle under the pressure. Numbers have doubled in a week at one hospital.

DailyPotion · 19/12/2020 18:25

I think the majority will comply. My turkey supplier is advertising that a number of turkeys have unexpectedly become available in last hour. I've seen 5 of my closeish friends post on FB, devastated that they now won't be seeking their adult children.

Oh stop with the drama ? Police can't even stop knife crime in my city centre . They certainly haven't got the man power to stop people especially in big city's .
Shopaholic100 · 19/12/2020 18:29

Have they said how long these restrictions will last or be reviewed?

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 19/12/2020 18:30

I think they said that they’d be reviewed on 30 December

I heard two weeks

This is true but they've been making some strange priority choices. My friend was forcibly moved on when she sat on an empty beach to eat a sandwich in the first lockdown which was never against the rules, let alone the law

Yes, somewhere between 70 & 80% according to the most recent research. Of course those that won’t (or at least will say they won’t) often shout the loudest, especially within their own echo chambers.

I’m not surprised and agree
Catsmother1 · 19/12/2020 18:39

@HelloDaisy

Can my dd drive to visit her boyfriend about 30 minutes away to go for a walk? We are in tier 4 and I can’t find the answer anywhere!
This is what I want to know. My son’s partner is in tier 4, as are we. They live about 30 minutes drive apart. So I’m thinking if it’s like the last lockdown, they will be allowed to see each other for a walk, as long as the walk is longer than an hour long?! Which it would be anyway.

@GrishainDisguise

Be careful, because for instance your car insurance will be invalid if you have an accident and it was not an essential journey. There can be many other instances where it matters if the stay at home order is law.
Codswallop. How when there's no definition of essential?
DecemberDiana · 19/12/2020 18:44

Most people I know do try to follow the law or the rules.
