Can someone explain how is it ?

OP posts:
CheesePleaseLoueese · 19/12/2020 21:26

@lavenderlou

More transmissible normally means it’s weaker.

But it isn't yet known if this is the case with Covid.

Agreed.
SmileyClare · 19/12/2020 21:28

Fair point, scaevola I just think there's a slight hysteria on social media today about a "new more deadly virus" so I was pointing out there's no indication of that. It's shape has mutated making it more contagious that is why it is flourishing.

Horehound · 19/12/2020 21:29

I thought the increased transmission rate is because no one is immune yet and so it will spread faster.

Aprilrainbow · 19/12/2020 21:35

@secretllama

Well they've been implying since March that you're pretty much guaranteed to catch it if you so much as brush past someone in a restaurant or touch a trolly so how can you get 70% more transmissible than 100%?

Sorry, im not being serious clearly 🤣... just think the whole thing is madness. Make people scared enough as compliance is dropping. Or is that the measures for the virus before were excessive?

100 sick people infect another 100 people that's 100%. 100 sick people infect another 170 people that's 170%, in other words 70% more transmissible.
Boris “Families will lose loved ones”
My Aut died 3 weeks ago from it and my friend has been admitted today with it. Her chances at this point are 50/50 and she is only 50 years old. I love her and am so sorried. Wake up. This is real.
jazzandh · 19/12/2020 21:37

It's not so dangerous, that they will move vaccine supplies about to tier 4, to protect the very vulnerable though!

Suzi888 · 19/12/2020 21:38

It’s a virus, flu mutates every year and so will this. It’s not a new concept, that’s why the flu jab is tweaked each year.

“Its crazy isn't it, so many covid deniers and 'Well I'm off to see me nan and Boris isnt gonna stop me!' loons confused.”
Why is it so crazy if you’ve isolated prior to visiting. I don’t get the logic? If you think you can still carry it after using masks, distancing and then isolating beforehand then Confused. None of those things have worked then?

cbt944 · 19/12/2020 21:42

The new variant — which UK scientists have named “VUI – 202012/01” — includes a genetic mutation in the “spike” protein.

“Changes in this part of the spike protein may result in the virus becoming more infectious and spreading more easily between people,” Public Health England noted.

I don't know. They're not making these rules to be mean, they are trying to protect people, in their bumbling way, as new information comes in.

But so many posters on MN seem dead keen on their right to bury family members in January and February.

You're absolutely right. There is no evidence it is more deadly.

However more contagious at same severity still means bigger problems for health services, because there will be the same proportion of serious cases amongst a bigger number of cases.

And with a bigger number of cases (and consequent hospitalisations) the fewer other types of patient the NHS will be able to treat safely.

Londonmummy66 · 19/12/2020 21:50

The cynic in me thinks they were really worried about everyone piling into the January sales so out the flood defences up early.

I wasn't planning on meeting anyone over Christmas as DPs will be midway through innoculation but I had intended to pop up to Hatchards for a spot of last minute book buying - Bugger...

Emeeno1 · 19/12/2020 21:53

Fear makes the wolf look bigger.

You will die, I will die. Death is a part of life. We managed to push it away to the fringes but covid has bought it back front and centre. Thinking about our own and our loved ones mortality connects us back to every age before our own. They lived with death up close and personal and so will we.

iVampire · 19/12/2020 22:51

Yes @Emeeno1, there was nothing like my diagnosis with an incurable cancer to focus my mind

I still don’t want anyone to die avoidably before their time

Which is what will happen to thousands more people (all causes) if we let NHS be overwhelmed. It’s the most damaging scenario by far

SmileyClare · 19/12/2020 23:23

I agree with the above points. It's got to be taken seriously but remaining rational and not using Facebook as your only information source is best.

My eyes are rolling so hard at threads declaring Well I'm not listening to advice so there I can't actually read them.

timeforanewstart · 19/12/2020 23:55

So will they be taking this new strain into account when they send schools back in january

timeforanewstart · 19/12/2020 23:57

Also unless germany have announced different rules to a couple days ago they seem to be allowing slightly longer mixing but with limited people which would if made more senSe for us to of done.
Also closed schools for longer again makes sense

SmileyClare · 20/12/2020 00:02

@timeforanewstart

So will they be taking this new strain into account when they send schools back in january
The sudden decision announced on the last day of term to delay the return to schools after Christmas, get remote learning in action, and the plans for mass testing being implemented when pupils return, is a sign that Yes they are .
timeforanewstart · 20/12/2020 00:05

@SmileyClare year 11 are straight back and already had a letter from our school saying testing won't happen yet , and others all back in following week so only 4 days home learning
They are allowing kids outdoor sport to continue rugby , football etc surely as we know so little and transmission is higher we should be limiting it all

SmileyClare · 20/12/2020 00:15

Oh right, that's disappointing. It varies from school to school then. Mass testing was a big ask at such short notice, I really feel for school staff trying to implement all this.

timeforanewstart · 20/12/2020 00:19

@SmileyClare yes i think its due to logistics etc i only glanced the letter tbh , goverment threw it in schools last minute as usual
If this new strain is so infectious then we should be doing a lockdown across board surely , how many travel in to london and se for work daily from various areas
I have less issue with xmas being disrupted if they actually tighten it all
Germanys measures seem better to me , unless they have done a u turn since

Nat6999 · 20/12/2020 00:29

They are saying this mutation is easier to catch but there doesn't seem to be any information on if it is any more deadly than the original virus. Will the same treatments still work for anyone ill enough to be admitted to hospital? Will the same tests still work to confirm if someone gets the new virus?

timeforanewstart · 20/12/2020 00:33

Best we can hope for is that its less severe , if so many unknowns about it why are we not all locking down until we at least have more data
A real 2 week full lockdown whist schools are shut across the countrys and shut borders

happystone · 20/12/2020 00:34

I was not surprised to see all the rich privileged Londoners fled like rats on trains and in cars before midnight spreading there new viruses. Disgusting Xmas Sad

timeforanewstart · 20/12/2020 01:03

@happystone be interesting to see if any mps go back to second homes

timeforanewstart · 20/12/2020 01:05

@happystone but you are aware most londoner's are not rich and privileged and have the strictest xmas rules now to deal with

BlairCorneliaWaldorf · 20/12/2020 06:14

I think you’ll find most MPs class their constituency homes as their primary residence and they go to London for work. Travel for work is still permitted.
