QueenStromba

I am in London an it looks more like the people that weren't infected the first time are getting it now.
A lot of people around me have had positive tests lately and none have suggested the had it before.

In fact I find it interesting that my family had it before first lockdown and despite being keyworkers plus kids been in badly infected schools this term we are a fine and are friends who had it before are all gone as well.

Could be pot luck though. Who knows.

Dahlietta · 19/12/2020 14:45

Not what I expected from mumsnet.

You must be new around here 😏

SophieB100 · 19/12/2020 14:45

I posted the above, it was on the Guardian's live feed.

HeyBaby2020 · 19/12/2020 14:45

@treening

I'll be seeing my mum and sister regardless. We are all in London and we've all been isolating for 2 weeks to be able to do this.
Please do and don’t accept anyone telling you not to!!!

BREAKING: Christmas cancelled for London, South East and East, as areas moved into new Tier 4 with “stay at home” message by law. Christmas bubbles only allowed for Tiers 1 - 3 on Xmas Day with “stay local message”. International travel not advised. Latest plan. *@cazjwheeler*

@SophieB100 I’m actually pleased to hear that... sounds like the right thing to do. Please take care of yourselves and each other. X

SofiaMichelle · 19/12/2020 14:46

@Unsure33

Indeed. Whether you detest Boris or just really dislike him, our government has to react to what is in front of it. Other countries are changing their policies as and when it's needed; it's an unprecedented situation.

The U.K. government hasn't made the virus mutate and become more virulent. It's happened and action is needed. If that means people can't get together for a big virus-spreading party at Christmas then so be it.

Some things are more important than mildly upset PFBs

nolovelost · 19/12/2020 14:46

To all those bloody moaning - stay home and save lives. Can totally understand how some people feel if they've got loved ones terminally ill but I think so many people are foolishly travelling and will be encouraging the inevitable spread. It's inevitable we're going to have another lockdown.

sergeilavrov · 19/12/2020 14:46

Christmas looks much more different this year for those who have lost loved ones to this pandemic, relative to concerns about hair cuts and hotel refunds. At least the empty seat at your table is a temporary one.

The people on here saying following the rules hasn't made a difference have a special strain of ignorance. The projected figures for illness and death without instituting these rules were calculated by the government - they don't just randomly decide to make up rules. You just have to look at the US to see what happens when no one follows the rules. Just because you can't observe the alternative doesn't mean you can say there wasn't one. Equally, complaining about vaccine rollout when the UK has been the fastest Western country to do that suggests we have the most talented logisticians in the world on MN. Beyond that, they immediately bought up all the vaccines and PPE they could - placing public health far above expense or loss in a way other states have refused to. Plenty of space for you to work on improving these processes if you genuinely have better ideas.

I'm so relieved to live in a country where people wanted tough restrictions (no leaving the house at all for much of the time!), everyone followed them, and for the tiny proportion who broke the rules - they were dealt with severely. In the UK, the government have to strike a balance between the ideal regulations to stop the spread and what British people will follow.

All good. Not gone that would be bad!
Wrecktal · 19/12/2020 14:47

Well said @SofiaMichelle

FairyontopofthetreeBatman · 19/12/2020 14:47

@Latenightreader

I could be completely screwed. My mother has been in lockdown with us since March, but had to go back to her home (200 miles away) at the start of December for medical appointments plus a couple of other things which were going to be hard to rearrange. I drove her home (I lost my job due to Covid) and returned to my home, the plan being to go there for Christmas. As a result I have limited fresh food in (plenty of tins), no tree, and a toddler...
Can you plan to set off straight away if there’s a travel ban announced?
midscram · 19/12/2020 14:47

Sadly we would as a country have been better off if Boris Johnson had died of the virus, not that I want or wanted anyone to die from it.

That's just nasty. What would your plan be?

SophieB100 · 19/12/2020 14:47

Sorry.
I'll go and sit on the naughty step Wink this thread is moving so fast I didn't see your messages @hepatocyte. Apologies.

Cantstandsmugness · 19/12/2020 14:48

That is NOT Catherine Wheelers account! NO blue tick and not many followers. On her real account she hasn’t said a thing about it.

snowballer · 19/12/2020 14:48

The tweet is - apparently - genuine. See below from another Sunday Times account

Kissthepastrychef · 19/12/2020 14:49

Well it will be interesting if they ban travel from tier 3 as I work in a tier 2 area as a critical worker and cannot work from home (999/radio operator for police) and am carer for my mum in tier 2.
Presumably certain people will be exempt

MarshaBradyo · 19/12/2020 14:49

Twitter confusion great that helps Hmm

Discreetly putting this here....

IMAGINE THE CLUSTERFUCK IF CORBYN HAD GOT IN

🤣😆🤣😂🤣😆🤣😂🤣😆🤣😂

I think we got the best of a horrific bunch.

Hate the present bunch but am Jewish so would have to agree with you Grin
tinselfest · 19/12/2020 14:50

@poshme

I don't think he should cancel bubbles.

Some of us have begun carefully self isolating & reducing contacts so we can see family in 4 days.

Some of us have been following the rules to the letter and are desperate to see family.

If he cancels bubbles people will just ignore the rules.

I agree with you. We have a relative in her late 90's who lives on her own, and who has become much more frail over the last month or so. The likelihood is that there's not much time left anyway. We simply cannot leave her on her own on Christmas Day. She's already said there isn't much point in being alive any more.
Whattimeisdinner · 19/12/2020 14:51

@HighHeelBoots

Put up barriers i say, stop the Southern strain infecting the North Xmas Wink
You're opening a can of worms there HighHeel Xmas Grin
Nat6999 · 19/12/2020 14:51

It will be about the mutations & probably introducing travel restrictions. He daren't cancel Christmas but will bring a lockdown back by 28 December.
