Can Tier3 eat out in Tier1 area for Christmas?

Tier3 · 16/12/2020 08:53

We live in Tier3 and have a self catering cottage booked in a Tier1 area. We are two households (6 people) but we all travel from Tier3.
We will travel between the 23-27 now, but we have a few restaurants booked and also want to go shopping in the small town we are going to.
Can we still go shopping and eat out or do we have to follow Tier 3 rules and stay inside ?

Nope you have to follow the rules from the area you live in re eating out, check the gov site it has all of the info on this.

I think shops are open throughout all tiers but not restaurants at tier 3

cantdothisnow1 · 16/12/2020 08:57

I'm tier 3 and morally would not go into restaurants, let alone what the guidance says.

Totally unfair on the people in tier 1 to spread the infection around.

southeastdweller · 16/12/2020 09:00

There are no rules about this, so do as you feel is necessary.

HopeAndDriftWood · 16/12/2020 09:01

No. You’re supposed to behave like you’re in tier 3 if you go into lower tier areas.

You also can’t use restaurants/pubs under the Christmas rules, you can only mix households in private homes or gardens.

I expect plenty of people will tell you to do what you want, but morally I don’t think I could. There’s so few places that are tier 1, and all of them have been concerned about tourism and hospital capacity this year.

QueenStromba · 16/12/2020 09:01

I'm flabbergasted that anyone would even need to ask this. I guess the tier 1 and 2 areas are going to be just as fucked as tier 3 in the new year.

borageforager · 16/12/2020 09:02

Usually if you live in tier 3 you have to follow tier 3 rules wherever you are but I assume the Christmas suspension over rides this. That doesn’t mean it’s a reasonable thing to do though...

And the above is why we are seeing other tiers rising because people are coming into lower tiers and doing what they want.

It clearly states here:

If you live in a Tier 3 area, you must continue to follow Tier 3 rules when you travel to a Tier 1 or Tier 2 area. You must not stay with anyone you do not live with elsewhere in the UK or visit their home (unless you share a support bubble)

There are totally rules about this - if you travel between tiers you have to abide by the stricter set of rules even if you've travelled to a lower tier. If you live in tier 3 you absolutely cannot go to the pub or a restaurant.

But there are no rules about this, and even if there were OP doesn't have to abide by them.
Swingometer · 16/12/2020 09:04

The 'Christmas bubble' rules for 23-27 Dec state that you can't go to pubs/restaurants/cafes etc with your Christmas bubble

In practice I have no idea how cafes/restaurants/pubs in Cornwall will be able to police whether their customers live permanently in the area (tier 1 rules) or are visiting from tier 2 or 3 areas

Tier3 · 16/12/2020 09:05

Agree morally is not the right thing to do and if we go we will have to self cater and isolate.Just gathering all the facts. Thanks.

Lots of self catering properties and companies in Tiers 1 and 2 are cancelling bookings from Tier 3 so I hope you have checked you can still go at all.

southeastdweller · 16/12/2020 09:06

That's guidance, though. So, like I said, there are no rules.

We live on the border of a tier 2/ 3 area and are just in tier 3. I have heard , anecdotally, that some cafe's and restaurants in tier 2 on the border are asking for proof of address.

It is frustrating for me, given that I am just the wrong side of the border that I can't do what my family just the right side of the border can do given that I can walk there from my house in less than 10 minutes. But you can't blame the businesses from trying to protect themselves. The last thing they need is a spike in local infections and to have to close again.

Tier3 · 16/12/2020 09:08

@Ontopofthesunset, yes we have checked and we can still go, but also get a refund which is probably what we will go forSad

No you can't. Please don't.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 16/12/2020 09:09

Tier 3 law states you aren’t allowed to mix indoors with another household. So although you’re legally allowed to go to pubs in lower tiers, you can’t go with other households.

Christmas rules specifically say you still can’t mix in pubs.

Same situation here. The police are stopping people crossing a bridge in a village locally (the river is the border) to stop people going into Tier 2 to restaurants.

MyCrownHasFallen · 16/12/2020 09:12

You should not even go on holiday you should just stay put in your own home separately. Cancel Christmas!!!

Crumpetycrump · 16/12/2020 09:13

We live in tier 3 Bristol and have a table in a pub booked in a tier 2 area for Boxing Day. Bristol has lower cases than most tier 2 areas so it seems very annoying that we can’t go unless we move to tier 2 today.

Swingometer · 16/12/2020 09:13

@cantdothisnow1 you can't blame them but can understand how frustrating that must be for you

We are also tier 3 but not near a tier 2 border

QueenStromba · 16/12/2020 09:14

@wannadisc0

So as I understood it tiers are not a thing over the Christmas relaxation period however one of the rules over Christmas is that you cannot socialise in pubs/restaurants with your bubble over the Christmas period, you can only bubble in a private home?
The tiers still exist over Christmas - pubs in London won't be opening, for example.

no I absolutely do not blame them.

They are quite within their rights to want to protect their businesses.

The more people break/ bend or interpret the rules to suit themselves the longer this will go on.

Lifeispassingby · 16/12/2020 09:16

@wannadisc0 the only rules relaxed for Xmas are the ones regarding mixing households in private homes, all other rules still stand as far I understood it
