Can Tier3 eat out in Tier1 area for Christmas?

Tier3 · 16/12/2020 08:53

We live in Tier3 and have a self catering cottage booked in a Tier1 area. We are two households (6 people) but we all travel from Tier3.
We will travel between the 23-27 now, but we have a few restaurants booked and also want to go shopping in the small town we are going to.
Can we still go shopping and eat out or do we have to follow Tier 3 rules and stay inside ?

You shouldn't but that is different to saying you can't.

@Crumpetycrump

We live in tier 3 Bristol and have a table in a pub booked in a tier 2 area for Boxing Day. Bristol has lower cases than most tier 2 areas so it seems very annoying that we can’t go unless we move to tier 2 today.
You do realise that's against the rules?
TheGreatWave · 16/12/2020 09:21

@QueenStromba

I'm flabbergasted that anyone would even need to ask this. I guess the tier 1 and 2 areas are going to be just as fucked as tier 3 in the new year.
Well seeing that many tier 2 areas have higher rates than some tier 3 areas I am not sure of your reasoning here.
dietingtomorrow · 16/12/2020 09:22

It will be a great pity if areas like Cornwall have to go into a higher tier because tier 3 people have infected them over Christmas. Their economy is tourist based and has suffered enough. Let it survive so we can all enjoy it next summer!

Crumpetycrump · 16/12/2020 09:25

I booked the table when bristol was in tier 1. When I contacted them to cancel they suggested waiting until after the new tier announcement, which is what I’m doing. So no we won’t be breaking the rules but it doesn’t make sense!

Ontopofthesunset · 16/12/2020 09:28

It is really disappointing - I know a few people who were just hoping to go away with their families to be somewhere else, go for walks etc, and now can't.

Crumpetycrump · 16/12/2020 09:40

Bristol in tier 3 has a rate of 115.2 per 100,000 which is much lower than many tier 2 areas!

Fande · 16/12/2020 09:40

I live in teir 2 and on the border of Greater Manchester. I am sure people from GM are using our coffee shops and restaurants. I don't blame them as there is two costa coffee shops a 5 minute walk from each other however one can open for sitting in and the other can't and there is restaurant that is allowed to open is closer to the neighbouring town than our town yet they are not allowed to use it.

Bowerbird5 · 16/12/2020 09:53

It is a pity they didn’t put a restriction on how far you could travel like NZ. They had 5 km then gradually increased it.
At this rate we will go into lockdown over Christmas.Theres going to be a lot of leftover turkey. If this happens we are going to deliver the meal to our son’s.

It's like that in loads of Tier 3 places right across the Midlands and North. Can't see any tier 3 places being downgraded today. We will have to be patient until January I expect. I am tier 3, rate is currently 80ish per 100,000 and has been low throughout.

'I'm flabbergasted that anyone would even need to ask this. I guess the tier 1 and 2 areas are going to be just as fucked as tier 3 in the new year.'

Yes I'm flabbergasted too. It's as if people think it is the place not the people that transmit the infection. I know someone in tier 1 who wanted to visit family in tier 3 but it wasn't allowed so they came to her Confused

dottiedodah · 16/12/2020 10:03

We are in tier 2. some of the Restaurants are open but we are only allowed to visit with our own family .It actually tells you under BBC news Christmas rules that this is the case.No meeting indoors .Went to meet SIL for a Coffee yesterday, and was actually asked by the Coffee Shop owner if we were from the same household .We werent so had to sit outside and dodge the Showers!

Lifeispassingby · 16/12/2020 12:20

Those places with a seemingly low infection rates maybe having issues with rate of increase in those areas- prior to lockdown we had approx 100 per 100,000 and now have over 300

cologne4711 · 16/12/2020 12:31

We live on the border of a tier 2/ 3 area and are just in tier 3. I have heard , anecdotally, that some cafe's and restaurants in tier 2 on the border are asking for proof of address

My mum is in a tier two area, not near tier 3, and she says her local pubs etc have been checking that groups are in the same household, or no more than two (they'll apparently let two elderly ladies in, assuming they are in a bubble, but not three) so if she meets more than one friend at a time they have to sit outside. So they are checking.

If you are in tier 3 you shouldn't be going on holiday in tier one, although you can obviously stay with relatives over Christmas, but not in accommodation.

Tier3 · 16/12/2020 12:44

You CAN stay in holiday accommodation over Christmas as that is what we were advised by the holiday letting agency we booked with. They are also offering refund which is what we have opted for.

I take it you're either coming to Cornwall or the Isle of Wight then?

I know it's tempting to think that everyone in Tier one areas are living life of unfettered freedom, but we're really not. And one of the reasons that rates are so low is because people are being extremely cautious about mixing and indoor entertainment even though there is hardly any indoor entertainment anyway

Come down on holiday, go to the beach, have picnics and walks outside and have a lovely time by all means. The forecast looks ok over Christmas and I hope you enjoy your break. But just be sensible and considerate.

Delatron · 16/12/2020 13:09

I don’t think they are checking everywhere. Not that it’s right but they need the business too.

Heard stories from friends in London who go out with friends and use the ‘business meeting’ angle.

Pubs round here are encouraging ‘business meetings’ saying they’ll provide pens and paper! Posts all over Facebook about it.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/12/2020 13:13

@southeastdweller

There are no rules about this, so do as you feel is necessary.
Completely incorrect.
southeastdweller · 16/12/2020 13:15

Yes, I was absolutely wrong! I stand corrected, apologies. I misread OP's post and thought she was talking about now and didn't realise he or she was talking about the 23rd-27th for which there are definitely rules.

DappledOliveGroves · 16/12/2020 13:19

I'm Tier 3. I travelled to Tier 2 at the weekend and met a friend for a coffee at Starbucks. Great for both our mental health and we had a lovely time.

It's a virus. Morality is irrelevant. Assuming the restaurant in Tier 1 is happy to have your booking then go for it.

MarieG10 · 16/12/2020 13:20

No matter all the views in here, the reality is of significant levels of ignoring going on. I had to visit a tier 2 area from tier 3 for a work meeting that was unavoidable. The regs are that you can do these in your own home but have to have the risk assessments all completed which I am not even going to attempt. So I booked to go to the pub 1 mile away and got a small side room and we were able to meet and work.

However, outside in the main restaurant...was full of meetings of mums in groups of 4-5 all around me etc as well as others. So it is either ignorance or no intention to observe any rules...they are in reality being widely ignored. Same as some neighbours are going to be having parties as the xmas rules are utterly unenforceable

In reality it is all down to people being responsible but whether it is fatigue or can't be bothered, they are in reality no longer being observed.

Why couldn’t you have had that mental health boost meeting outside with take away coffee? Hmm
OverTheRainbow88 · 16/12/2020 13:23

We are going from tier 3 to tier 2 over Christmas period as a family unit; ironically rates are currently lower here in tier 3 than where we are going in tier 2.

Delatron · 16/12/2020 13:27

I think an element of rule breaking is due to the tiers being unfair? My family in Yorkshire have had restrictions for months and months. They, like lots of others in tier 3 are in a small town in the country on the border of a tier 2 area. Cases are low. Pubs are closing daily.

My town in the SE has higher rates per 100,000 than theirs yet all pubs and restaurants are open.

RedToothBrush · 16/12/2020 13:36

A Christmas bubble will be able to spend time together in private homes, including second homes and caravans, to attend places of worship, or meet in a public outdoor place.

If you do form a Christmas bubble , you should not meet socially with friends and family you do not live with in your home or garden unless they are part of your Christmas bubble.

In all other settings, people should follow local restrictions in the tier in which they are meeting.

and

Between 23 and 27 December, you may travel between tiers and other nations of the UK if necessary to meet with other households in your Christmas bubble or return home. Once at your destination, you should follow the rules in that tier.

This kind of screws Tier 1 because the rules are that people from Tier 3 CAN follow the rules for Tier 1 if they met another household there.
