Can Tier3 eat out in Tier1 area for Christmas?

Tier3 · 16/12/2020 08:53

We live in Tier3 and have a self catering cottage booked in a Tier1 area. We are two households (6 people) but we all travel from Tier3.
We will travel between the 23-27 now, but we have a few restaurants booked and also want to go shopping in the small town we are going to.
Can we still go shopping and eat out or do we have to follow Tier 3 rules and stay inside ?

@PurpleDaisies because it was pissing down with rain and because I wanted to relax, have coffee, have cake and spend some quality time with my friend. And because I refuse to kowtow to a virus and to give up fundament liberties, such as freedom of association.

Verite1 · 16/12/2020 13:38

It’s not quite the same issue, but the guidance here says that between 23-27 dec

“you can continue to meet people who are not in your Christmas bubble outside your home according to the rules in the tier you are meeting in”

www.gov.uk/government/publications/making-a-christmas-bubble-with-friends-and-family/making-a-christmas-bubble-with-friends-and-family

Note the use of “meeting in” as opposed to “living in”. So that suggests you could meet travel to tier 2 have a meal outside with no more than 5 friends as long as they are not your Xmas bubble. But if they are your Xmas bubble - you can’t! Makes no sense at all to me

@RedToothBrush

Thanks for sharing.

It’s pretty mental how many of us don’t understand the guidelines and tell others with such conviction what they can and can’t do, yet get it wrong!

Verite1 · 16/12/2020 13:39

Ha - someone has just beaten me to it!

RedToothBrush · 16/12/2020 13:41

So you can live in Tier 3 go to Tier 1 to stay with your bubble (or in accomodation) and go out for a meal with them as Tier 1 restrictions now apply.

But it doesn't seem that you can go out with another household in your christmas from Tier 3 or Tier 2 in Tier 1 if you are just going out for a meal. It seems that the point is staying overnight is crucial here.

Its not terribly clear though and makes little logical sense.

cantdothisnow1 · 16/12/2020 13:43
A Christmas bubble will be able to spend time together in private homes, including second homes and caravans, to attend places of worship, or meet in a public outdoor place.

If you do form a Christmas bubble , you should not meet socially with friends and family you do not live with in your home or garden unless they are part of your Christmas bubble.

In all other settings, people should follow local restrictions in the tier in which they are meeting.

and

Between 23 and 27 December, you may travel between tiers and other nations of the UK if necessary to meet with other households in your Christmas bubble or return home. Once at your destination, you should follow the rules in that tier.

This kind of screws Tier 1 because the rules are that people from Tier 3 CAN follow the rules for Tier 1 if they met another household there.

www.gov.uk/guidance/guidance-for-the-christmas-period#meeting-friends-and-family
That's insane though, I predict another bloody national lockdown if Londoners flock to tier 1 areas for Xmas.

Ridiculously shortsighted in my opinion.

You obvious refuse to think about other people.

Lovely.

I live in the SW and am fucking furious that muppets from around the country are coming here for Christmas for a jolly and will inevitably spread Covid to what has been a low prevalence area. Even more furious at the govt than individuals. I cannot believe this is allowed to happen and that people are so fucking selfish.

If you do form a Christmas bubble , you should not meet socially with friends and family you do not live with in your home or garden unless they are part of your Christmas bubble.

So you can meet with them in a public space like a park (or in a hospitality venue if you are Tier 1 and they are also Tier 1) but thats it.

If you read the guidance if you live in Tier 1 and you are NOT forming a christmas bubble, technically you could argue that just following the rules of your tier at home work better for your circumstances (but crucially everyone else in the group also CAN NOT bubble to do that).

It is dreadfully written.

sirfredfredgeorge · 16/12/2020 13:53

The Tier 3 law doesn't actually say you can't enter a pub either, the restriction for Tier 3 on individuals is the same as in Tier 2, the difference is that in Tier 3 pubs cannot open - so if you were to travel to the Tier 1 area then you could not open a pub, but entering is not prohibited by law.

I personally wouldn't, but I can't see it being illegal, it's the opening of pubs in tier 3, not the attendance at that's illegal.

You assume that the government won't change the Tiers in the next 48 hours.

Its entirely possible to stop this issue that they will put EVERYWHERE in T2 for the Christmas period therefore screwing the issue with T3 people trying to eat out in T1.

Also the rule of 5 will still apply if eating out. You can't just rock up in a group of 7 and expect a table even in T1.

Tier3 · 16/12/2020 13:59

TBH I think the risk is higher when people travel to mix with relatives in households than people going on holidays and eating out as all the restaurants and pubs I have visited since March have been Covid secure.

@TankGirl97 I think you should try and calm down a bit and remember that back in the summer we were promised wave after wave and piles of bodies and a non functioning Treliske (insert hospital of choice), and we got...nothing.

Yes the weather was warmer. However there is still fuck all to do in the winter, social distancing will be in place in the inside places that are open, and people will mainly be either out in the fresh air with the people they are on holiday with, or in the cottages they have booked, again with the people they are on holiday with. They won't be coming into our homes, schools and workplaces and breathing all over us or coughing in our faces.

A bit of perspective is needed, and to remember that we do already have some people with Covid.

HesterShaw1 · 16/12/2020 14:02

What @Tier3 said in fact!

BenidormLife · 16/12/2020 14:15

It's advisory not to, but not illegal. I went for a meal last week in a tier 2 area when my area is tier 3

BenidormLife · 16/12/2020 14:17

And to be honest the restaurant we ate at were happy for the custom

That’s my understanding but it is illegal from the 23rd - 27th.
NamechangedforAIBU · 16/12/2020 14:19

A lot of tier 1 are not accepting bookings or cancelling bookings from the lepers in Tier 3.....

Seriously though - DON'T

Chocolate1992 · 16/12/2020 14:20

Nobody’s going to stop you though, are they?

The irratic driving around the South Manchester / Cheshire border late on a Sunday Afternoon is 'interesting'. Its almost as if there are lots of people who have been drinking.

Don't worry. Cheshire East and similar areas bordering T3 will end up in Tier 3 soon enough.

EasterIssland · 16/12/2020 14:42

I live in bristol(t3) and the areas around as are most tier 2,,, they've been going up loads since lockdown, reading this thread I understand why...

DappledOliveGroves · 16/12/2020 14:49

Reading this thread I'd make a plea with anyone to listen to Lord Sumption's comments on Talk Radio. I cannot understand how people are willingly giving up their fundamental rights, urging tougher and tougher restrictions, boasting about how they're cancelling Christmas - for what? It's a virus. The fact that the NHS is a mismanaged and underfunded entity that cannot cope is neither here nor there. The fact that people die - again, why is this something we're surprised by, unless we've been rooting for immortality?

Realistically, until the vaccine is rolled out and is proven to be effective, we have very little control of a virus. Lockdowns just prolong the issue. Short of locking yourselves in a box and enforcing the same across the world, banning any contact or interaction, the virus will spread, albeit at differing rates.

You don't want to catch it? Then stay at home, keep your children at home, and never leave the house or interact with others. Meanwhile, let the rest of us get on with our lives.

easy to say if you can stay at home, tell that to those that have to go to work, we can carry on with our lives.. you just need to change a bit of your habits and things would be easier.. but some people want to carry on having their 2019 life and don't care as it's others dying or losing their jobs

The rules have been sounding more and more like the game of 'Mornington Crescent' as the months have gone on. I'm not sure which particular variations are even in play anymore.

Someone pass me the gin.
