End of the Pub

With the pub industry set to lose £650 million in December alone, when many venues make a quarter of their annual turnover, this pretty much looks like the end of the pub, particularly smaller independent venues. A significant part of our culture and history swept away, although I’m sure property developers will be happy.......

There used to be four pubs in the village where I live. Now there is only one, and this was well before the current emergency. The problem is they just want to sell you over-priced, pre-cooked trade supplied packaged food and charge you restaurant prices for the drinks. Thanks, but no thanks.

Whilst sorry for those who rely on the income, I think less alcohol sales is a good thing. We should be really focussed on health right now given the circumstances.

This attitude worries me. What next? A mission to live to 150?

Arguments about what is good and bad food?

WouldBeGood · 14/12/2020 18:43

Ice cream and candy floss will be banned next - slippery slope

There is absolutely no evidence that pubs closing means people drink less - it normally just shifts the drinking to the home, and plenty of people drink more that way; apart from anything else it's cheaper

Exactly

And even in less controversial areas - I eat butter, I don’t want to eat the chemical spreads my mum eats.

Will nuts be too high in fat? Will I be banned from using the nhs if I slip while running?

And also, what do you think health is like when you have no income? Hospitality employs many people and there’s no reason to shut it down.

What a stupid thing to say.

There will not be fewer alcohol sales with the demise of the pub. People will get inebriated in their own homes instead.

Nellee · 14/12/2020 19:02

End of the cinema and theatres too.

emilyfrost · 14/12/2020 19:03

As someone who thinks alcohol should be illegal I would happily see the end of pubs, but unfortunately I don’t think it will come to that entirely.

Some will survive, but only the ones that can adapt. It’s about time businesses did anyway.

If they were truly wanted, they wouldn’t have been failing in the first place.

What else should be illegal in your dominion? Just interested.

I work in a pub , I need my job , I’m entering tier3 Wednesday and back on furlough after only being back 3 weeks
Sad times

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/12/2020 19:10

I think it was the rise in duty that started to kill the pub

Also the smoking ban. Don't get me wrong, I understand why they did it - but the cry at the time was that "many, many more would visit once they were smoke free" and of course it didn't happen

And for context I'm a non-smoker

Sorry to hear that

How long does furlough last?

XiCi · 14/12/2020 19:26

I hardly ever go to the pub - I certainly would never suggest it - and when I do I get lime and soda because I don’t really drink
Well your hardly the target market are you. I take it you don't go to bars or clubs either. Its like saying you don't mind if all restaurants close because you don't like food.

I totally agree with MissEllaWater. We have some great independent pubs here, mind you I live in a very socially vibrant city where people of all ages go out to all sorts of different pubs and bars. I hate people that are sneery about 'old mens pubs' as well. Why shouldn't there be places where all ages feel comfortable socialising.

Does everything we do need to be healthy? Can’t we enjoy the odd drink, fry up or cream cake? Like most things, it’s only problematic if done to excess.

Actually alcohol in moderation has many health benefits and moderate drinkers live longer on average than tee totallers. So enjoy that glass of wine with some good company in the pub when you can!

Yes, I think this pandemic has proved the need for better physical health in this country. We need to consume less alcohol

Walk down any high street on a Saturday night.

and fewer burgers, and milkshakes, and cheese, and butter and french fries and biscuits and cake and caffeine..... Yawn.

Again, a lot of those people got drunk at home before going out

I was going to say the same about the smoking ban. It had a huge effect on pubs and bingo halls.
PicsInRed · 14/12/2020 19:59

It's an economic disaster of millennial proportions, but it's not a event of cultural extinction. It's probably something akin to the Puritans.

WouldBeGood · 14/12/2020 20:02

I really don’t understand why they’ve shut all the pubs and restaurants. There’s no evidence of spread in them. And they’ve spent loads of money being Covid safe.
