Yes seems astonishing it has taken so long!? It is a German vaccine too. I’m surprised the Germans aren’t crosser. Imagine another country getting a British vaccine a month before we got it. Matt Hancock would chased out of town

Yes, imagine if Germany were vaccinating people with the Oxford vaccine a full 3 weeks before the UK was even set to give approval! Britain would be the 'laughing stock of the world' as so many people here love to say!

Blerg · 15/12/2020 13:15

Surely this is a time not to casually wait for a monthly meeting!

Great to see Pfizer roll out in the US.

sashagabadon · 15/12/2020 13:30

Well quite Blerg! As if they couldn’t get together and say, do you know what, this Covid-19 is abit of a nuisance, say we bring forward our monthly meeting to the beginning of the month rather than the end? What does everyone think?

More good news, Prue Leith has had her vaccine 😁
But what about Mary Berry?

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2020 13:33

Lol Sasha! That is good news Grin

How many experts are we talking do you think? And what precisely needs discussed? We've no idea, so I think it's unlikely that all of these people can just make themselves available at the same time, at any given moment.

Anyway: good news from Moderna.

Really? In the middle of a pandemic you don’t think people would/ should drop their other plans to meet to approve a vaccine that could save thousands of lives? The U.K. regulators managed it, why couldn’t the EU?
If it was my role I can’t think of anything else I would be doing that could literally be more important. But ho hum. Up to them I suppose but I am glad Merkel is pushing it forward. We all need the role out in Europe to start ASAP.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 15/12/2020 13:55

I'm just saying we have no idea of the processes involved, and how many people might have other commitments which would make it difficult for them to drop everything else.

It's easy for us to sit on here going 'fuck's sake, it's just a meeting' but we actually don't have a clue.

They weren't just asked to drop everything at a moment's notice though. The positive results for the Pfizer vaccine were announced on November 9th. In a pandemic, with rates rising across Europe, it seems odd that they felt they could delay approval - of a vaccine created in Germany - for nearly 2 months!

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 15/12/2020 13:59

I'm not defending it, I'm just pointing out that none of us have the vaguest understanding of what's involved so I'm not going to sit here in my kitchen bitching about it.

I actually think people that sit on these sort of panels have an absolute duty to drop everything when the time comes to approve a vaccine. Even if they have to join by zoom or whatever. I do find it unbelievable it has taken the EU so long and can’t think of a good reason. But anyway hopefully Merkel will get things moving for the EU citizens.
TheWorstShed · 15/12/2020 14:05

@DontWalkPastTheCastle you're right, I have no idea what is going on behind the scenes - I imagine it must be very complicated to mean a delay of this length. I wonder if we will ever know.

I keep wondering if there will be a book(s) in future that discuss the approaches of different countries / the spread / vaccines and treatments. I imagine it will be fascinating. Also the science of genetics and variable risk.

Obviously you're right to say that none of us are experts in how these things work, but it's hard to think of a good reason why the EU was still waiting until after Christmas to give approval, when the authorities in several countries managed to get their act together several weeks before.
FuzzyPuffling · 15/12/2020 14:11

I dare someone to go on a Brexit thread and when asked "name me one thing that's good...?" you can say "Speedy approval of vaccines" 😁

feelingverylazytoday · 15/12/2020 14:12

Of course they should 'drop everything'. A lot can happen in 2-3 weeks, it might mean that some people could die when they could have been protected.
I know Boris and his ministers are not popular here but I do feel they've done very well for us on the vaccine front.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 15/12/2020 14:14

Maybe it's just a numbers issue @IcedPurple

I mean, the UK regulators approves for one country. EU regulators, I'd imagine, have to take account of the different rules and legislation in all EU countries. I doubt they're doing nothing, I'd guess there's an absolute boatload of work going on behind the scenes.

GoldenOmber · 15/12/2020 14:23

4 countries, England,Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland. That may well be the reason but you would think for sometime so vitally important it would be streamlined like here and they won’t need to clear it all with 27 countries
DontWalkPastTheCastle · 15/12/2020 14:42

Yeah maybe. I don't know if you can just rush things like this though. It still takes time for 27 countries to sign something off. I dunno 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm happy to be corrected on this, but I would have thought the whole idea of having a joint EU authorisation board would be that you don't have to make separate legislation for every country?
juggler82 · 15/12/2020 14:46

Same regulator = same rules/standards. It's designed to be streamlined so all European pharma/research operates to the same standards. The MHRA won''t have different standards yet either, they work very closely with EMA peop!e.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 15/12/2020 14:57

I really don't know. Maybe they're just dragging their feet for unknown reasons.

Anyway: this thread is to bring the happy :) (and I just stumbled onto a thread where that was not the case so I'm staying here from now on ...)

sashagabadon · 15/12/2020 15:04
