Oxford vaccine - when?

I need this to be approved. It feels like it has been a long time coming.

I can’t put up with much more of all this awfulness.

OP posts:
Ethelfleda · 13/12/2020 18:21

I’m with you OP.

Ethelfleda · 13/12/2020 18:23

Just found this in the news though;

“Sarah Gilbert, professor of vaccinology at the university, branded the chances of it becoming available before December finished ‘pretty high’”

FuzzyPuffling · 13/12/2020 18:25

When the MHRA have finished doing their stuff. Carefully and thoroughly.

I don't want them to rush. I want this to be right, despite being desperate for a vaccine too.

ChaBishkoot · 13/12/2020 18:25

Well Oxford screwed up.
They presented their data so badly that the FDA has refused to licence them in the US unless they do another Phase 3 trial.
They are heavily dependent on AZ who will be the only pharma company not to make money from this.
The EU is unlikely to approve the Oxford vaccine as well based on their current extremely messy data.
So that leaves the UK. Which approved the Pfizer vaccine overnight and haven’t with the Oxford one.

Oxford shouldn’t have tried to use the mistake in Brazil to claim 90% efficacy. It was stupid and unprofessional. The other similar vaccine the GSK/Sanofi one is apparently now delayed.
For third world countries in particular which are so heavily dependent on these vaccines this is a body blow.

Mindymomo · 13/12/2020 18:26

Pretty high chances are good. We really need this for care home residents who cannot get out for appointments for vaccine.

ChaBishkoot · 13/12/2020 18:27

Sarah Gilbert did promise us this vaccine in September. So while she’s a wonderful scientist (I know her professionally), the Oxford data and the way it was presented as opposed to the Pfizer data is just....mind bogglingly bad. No wonder the regulatory authorities went wtf.

CabinClose · 13/12/2020 18:31

@ChaBishkoot Load of nonsense. The Oxford data wasn’t submitted in time for the last MHRA meeting, they didn’t have the results until later than Pfizer. It’s almost certain to be approved by both the EU and the U.K. In the U.K. that will probably happen this year. The US may well want more results from the ongoing phase 3 trials. Oh and the ‘mistake’ dose was given in the U.K. You’re so close to a full house of fully wrong.

LeFluffyPants · 13/12/2020 18:38

Also, I’m pretty sure Oxford never “claimed” 90% efficacy as an overall result - they claimed 70% as an average of all their trials.

I don’t disagree that they’ve made some mistakes and handled communication badly, which is a shame - but I still think what they’ve managed to achieve is extraordinary and I think it’s fantastic they’re not doing this for profit, making it affordable for the world. I’d very happily have their vaccine, please! Smile

raviolidreaming · 13/12/2020 18:39

Oh and the ‘mistake’ dose was given in the U.K

Yep. If posters are going to act like they know everything, then they should also know that basic mistakes undermine them too.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2020 18:41

Sarah Gilbert did promise us this vaccine in September.

She didn't 'promise it in September'. She gave that as an optimistic earliest estimate, if everything went absolutely smoothly.

CabinClose · 13/12/2020 19:49

And the reason they didn’t have it ready in September is there weren’t enough cases in the U.K. over the summer, so they didn’t hit a sufficient number of cases in the placebo arm.

Bathroom12345 · 13/12/2020 20:15

I believe Cabin is correct re the number of cases in Sept but it does seem to be dragging on. I presume even if it’s approved just before Xmas they won’t close down for the Christmas holidays will they?

Ridcully82 · 13/12/2020 20:25

@Ethelfleda

She said it on Marr this morning, she sounded pretty confident to me. But must admit, the desire to get it done,so to get the vulnerable protected faster.
ChaBishkoot · 13/12/2020 20:38

Btw I am as pro vaccine as it gets. Oxford messed up. And messed up badly. They had control over the messaging and they should never have claimed 90%. They wanted to match the Pfizer/Moderna headline.

ChaBishkoot · 13/12/2020 20:42

Go take a look at Eric Topol on Twitter.

Oxford vaccine - when?
ChaBishkoot · 13/12/2020 20:47

The global scientific community has raised its eyebrows. I would like this to end ASAP but...

Why do the anti Oxford vaccine posters always post the same two sources? It’s quite strange

Ponoka7 · 13/12/2020 20:59

I said this on another thread
My Consultant ran clinics last month, which was a catch up and this month. We had full bloods, stats, urine test and weight done. We then had a interview with two pharmacists. When we saw our Consultant, we found out that this was to get her numbers and priority right for the Oxford vaccine. We can't have the Pfizer vaccine. From what my Consultant said it should be available within two months, and she's gone through some of the data for her patient group.

"We really need this for care home residents who cannot get out for appointments for vaccine."

There are cases which carry 5'000 doses of the vaccine, if unopened they stay at the required temperature for ten days. Once opened the Pfizer vaccine can be stored between 2-8c for five days. They aren't injected at the stored temperature. With a little planning, which is easy for care home residents, the Pfizer one can be given.

tobee · 13/12/2020 21:09

None of the sources posted by anti Oxford Vaccine people ever mention that the Pfizer vaccine relied on trial participants to self report symptoms while Oxford Vaccine required trial participants to be tested weekly.

Regardless, what's the story with Moderna? I thought they were a week behind Pfizer and Oxford a week behind Moderna?

Oh and Pfizer were not approved "overnight"

ForBlueSkies · 13/12/2020 21:17

@ChaBishkoot

Don’t bother pointing them at facts. Been there, done that and so have a few brave others. It never ends well. 😂

The Oxford vaccine is the best and it will save the world. Any suggestion otherwise on Mumsnet is sacrilege.

There are enough positive signs in the data that I’m confident it will end up being a big part of our defence against this god-awful virus, but it’s beyond frustrating that the results are such a hot mess.

tootyfruitypickle · 13/12/2020 21:26

I reckon tuesday for approval. Total guess but I was right on day of first vaccine so tapping into my fortune telling skills again ...

tobee · 13/12/2020 21:31

I think it depends upon how you define "best" for starters.

Ignoring the less good aspects of the Oxford Vaccine, Pfizer or Moderna is just as pointless as ignoring the good.

Bathroom12345 · 13/12/2020 22:02

Tooth. That would be great re the Oxford vaccine
