Thanks @GiantKitten.
Luckily though I have a click and collect from Waitrose on the 24th and was able to add the Waitrose version to that.

Commiserations to those of you in London and the South East who had larger Christmas gatherings planned. Xmas Sad

Wishing you spacious freezers or refundable travel tickets ...

Madcats · 19/12/2020 17:00

Huge commiserations to all that are watching their plans go up in smoke. I can't help thinking that they waited for a few more European countries to announced lockdowns first.

I promise not to tinker with my online orders this weekend, so that people have a fighting chance of editing theirs if they need to.

StanfordPines · 19/12/2020 18:42

The Ocado app has got queues again.
As Madcats I shall stay away to allow others to edit or cancel their orders. I’m betting there will be a lot of cancellations as who is going to spend £90 for just them or them and their partner?

Standrewsschool · 19/12/2020 18:46

No slots available for me.

Onceuponatimethen · 19/12/2020 19:04

Our order coming tomorrow can’t be cancelled. We have the big turkey (allegedly) but no booze as other relatives had ordered that Shock

Onceuponatimethen · 19/12/2020 19:04

It’s a lot of food for 2 adults and 2 little kids

StanfordPines · 19/12/2020 19:06

Can it really not be cancelled, @Onceuponatimethen? If you call them I’d hope they can.

Onceuponatimethen · 19/12/2020 19:13

I guess I could try @StanfordPines - if I can get through

PoulePouletteEternellement · 19/12/2020 19:14

Won't that be several hundred thousands of people calling to cancel their orders?

Onceuponatimethen · 19/12/2020 19:47

So I did get through and didn’t have to wait more than about 15 minutes. For anyone who can no longer edit their Xmas shop and no longer hosting a big group these are the options:

  1. cancel free of charge provided order not ‘on its way’. I’m not sure, but think this might mean you can cancel up to the day before

  2. cancel even if order is ‘on its way’ which means you have to pay the full cost of any perishable items - for me this would be over £175, but I wouldn’t have to pay the reminder. But I also wouldn’t have a turkey etc

  3. hand back some items to driver - by rejecting them. You will get the money back. This is at driver discretion so you can’t hand back a significant volume of your shop. You have to tell driver before shopping left out as then it’s considered to have been handed over and then they will no longer take things back due to covid.

If the fresh stuff is £175 how much is the the whole order? (That said my order is usually mainly biscuits).

Onceuponatimethen · 19/12/2020 20:19

It’s mostly fresh stuff unfortunately - elderly relatives wanted lots of cheeses, turkey alone was £58 I think, juices, meat, fish etc

StanfordPines · 19/12/2020 20:31

A turkey is £58?
I haven’t eaten meat in 25 years and never bought a whole bird of any sort so I have no idea how much stuff like this costs.

Onceuponatimethen · 19/12/2020 20:41

Honestly I was shocked! I have never bought one before because we usually go to MIL for Xmas and she buys it. I’m guessing it’s some kind of super expensive one but I think it was the only option when I booked the slot

bruffin · 19/12/2020 22:09

Ive had a crown in my basket and let it go as a i got a frozen crown in tesco for £10.
We are actually having venison for xmas day but i always make avgolemeno soup on boxing day, so needed it for that

NotAnotherUserNumber · 19/12/2020 23:17

I wonder if lots of people cancelling their orders might mean more slots available to book?

I just checked and the next available delivery for me isn’t until Jan 3rd. We were supposed to be going to my parents for the allowed Christmas period, so didn’t get any food in. Now I am slightly panicking that we will run out of food. I know shops are still open for in person food shopping but I am really keen not to do that as we live in central london and I am shielding/vulnerable.

Any ideas on where else I could order food from so last minute (none of the major supermarkets seem to have slots left, unsurprisingly).

Ontheboardwalk · 20/12/2020 03:27

Ocado makes no sense whatsoever

I’ve got my slot booked for the 23rd but it will let me book a choice of a load of slots (at £9.99) for the day before. I’ve clicked on and it will let me book. I thought you were only allowed one delivery Christmas week?

Onceuponatimethen · 20/12/2020 06:36

Hi @Ontheboardwalk we were offered two Xmas slots in the end so maybe it’s your second slot

EachandEveryone · 20/12/2020 06:43

Well I’m a nurse so doing three 12 hour shifts in a row and won’t be going away for Xmas. So, where can I shop on Xmas Eve? My lodger is also having to stay and he has invited a friend over. They are both in their twenties and don’t really do Xmas. One is French so now I’m really panicking he will judge my cooking😃 they like to drink and play computer games so I doubt I will see them. I don’t think I can just run to Iceland, although I am tempted, help!!! Can only shop Xmas Eve.

Do you have the Co Op near you? I discovered the other day that our regions Co Op does delivery within 30 minutes! It’s via an app called Snappy.

I did an Amazon/Morrison's order yesterday morning and it was delivered three hours later.

NotAnotherUserNumber · 20/12/2020 10:57

@StanfordPines @SavoyCabbage

Thank you for the great ideas.

I don’t know why I didn’t even think of Amazon.

We do have a co-op nearish, but it is only a little corner shop one, but I will check whether they do delivery.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 20/12/2020 11:09

EachandEveryone - Please tell me there's a cast iron reason why your lodger and friend can't go shopping for the Christmas food they will also be eating? Or indeed take the time to find last minute grocery deliveries.

Madcats · 20/12/2020 11:13

NotAnother try Iceland for frozen veg and basics. I think they do free delivery over £20. There are usually plenty of slots for my local. Otherwise I would start by looking at the bigger supermarkets (Tesco, Asda..Sainsburys..Morrisons) as they might have more flexibility to fulfil orders.

Our Deliveroo can pick up orders from the Coop and some of the "Local" Tescos (there is bound to be more choice in Central London).

Aldi have introduced "Click and Collect" round here and you get to see which shops have slots nearby fairly painlessly. I'm not sure how good they are at subs (i.e. if you ordered 2 pints of milk, would they give you 2x1pint if they were OOS).

What about all the restaurants that have suddenly had to close. Are they doing anything creative with all their stock?
