Does your school require masks in the classroom?

I am trying to work out if heads can require children to wear masks in the classroom. There have been a few reports here of schools where this happens. I know most don't.

If your DC's school requires masks in the classroom, please say so. Any relevant details you can add about the school to understand why would be awesome too.

Why do you want to know this information? What’s your view on it? Do your children have to?
This feels like just a trawl for information...

Redlocks28 · 12/12/2020 13:37

No, my school doesn’t. The head was quite clear about the DfE guidance, which states that face coverings in the classroom can have a negative impact on teaching and were to be avoided.

Why do you want to know this information?

This is a data question. I am not looking for anything normative here.

Same as @Redlocks28. Tier 3 area so masks worn in corridors but classrooms no, as per Dfe guidance.

HipTightOnions · 12/12/2020 13:40

No. Apparently they’re not required because of their negative effects on communication and because pupils are in (enormous) bubbles.

Bubbles are irrelevant however because only “close contacts” of positive cases are required to isolate.

mamakoukla · 12/12/2020 13:41

Yes, outside of the UK. Transmission has remained low, few incidences within schools across our county. The joy of being at school has far outweighed wearing a mask. Being out of school and returning to online learning would have a far more detrimental effect than wearing a mask.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 12/12/2020 13:41

Not required, or indeed allowed. My son wanted to wear his but was told he couldn't.

Cracklefraggle · 12/12/2020 13:43

Secondary NW. My HT has always allowed staff and students to wear masks in classrooms if they wanted to. I have from the start as have quite a few of the kids I teach. It does not hamper learning in the slightest.

dementedpixie · 12/12/2020 13:43

I'm in Scotland and masks are required in secondary school from S4-S6 (age 15/16 onwards). They are also required by everyone if moving around the school between classes

I mean that students and staff in S4-S6 need to wear them in class as well as communal areas. Younger year groups can wear them in class if they want
Cracklefraggle · 12/12/2020 13:47

When I first asked about masks in Aug his response was that he didn't give a shiny what the DfE said. He wanted to make sure everyone was, and felt, safe. I realise how lucky we are.

So she can use it against other posters in another thread, where she has been discussing it this morning. She wants roc blame Heads for the crisis.

ChloeDecker · 12/12/2020 13:49

*to not roc

maddy68 · 12/12/2020 13:49

Mine does. But I teach in Spain andasks are compulsory everywhere

wirldsgonemad · 12/12/2020 14:06

No just corridors

golightlytoday · 12/12/2020 14:08

My child's large secondary school doesn't require them to wear masks at all. They say years /bubbles don't mix at all. So there is no need.

We've only had 8 confirmed cases so far.

I was a bit confused and questioned the school on it, but the figures seem to speak for themselves that they've got it sorted. But who knows

No. Boarding school. No cases.

Notstrongandstable · 12/12/2020 14:20

Yes masks on all day at our secondary, staff and students. Only allowed to take off when outside at lunchtime.
Tier 2 south east large secondary school
I think it's an over reaction personally, very low case numbers in our area even before the masks became compulsory

BefuddledPerson · 12/12/2020 14:22

Definitely the teachers' fault not the useless government Hmm

SageRosemary · 12/12/2020 14:24

We are in Ireland. Masks are compulsory in secondary schools. DC attend a local school which has a combined student/staff population of just over 1,000. Three confirmed cases since school re-opened in late August. One case in the student population was linked to part-time job in the hospitality sector. 2 other cases were confirmed, we think they were both teachers, these were not linked to the first case, but were probably linked to each other
. So 3 from >1,000 is less than one third of one per cent.

DC have grown accustomed to wearing masks and will also wear them for dance classes - 90 minutes of strenuous activity - without complaint.

Tinselandbaubauls · 12/12/2020 14:37

My kids wear masks at school all day. There are 2000 kids and they’ve had 15 cases since September. My kids actually don’t mind wearing them, not sure I could all day.

Coasterfan · 12/12/2020 14:43

DD is at a private secondary in Notts, they have small classes of around 18 and have had five or six cases since September and masks are only required in corridors.

ChloeDecker · 12/12/2020 15:11

On BBC news at 10 last night, they showed a short clip of a London school with kids moving in corridors (no SD!) with masks on then it cuts away very quickly when 3 of them have their mask around their chin!
