Does your school require masks in the classroom?

I am trying to work out if heads can require children to wear masks in the classroom. There have been a few reports here of schools where this happens. I know most don't.

If your DC's school requires masks in the classroom, please say so. Any relevant details you can add about the school to understand why would be awesome too.

And , funnily enough, France chloe grin

Do they really wear a mask while teaching in class? I didn't know that.

Apparently not.

Been doing it since September.

Remmy123 · 12/12/2020 18:53

My son's secondary- the kids not the teachers

Nellodee · 12/12/2020 18:57

Sorry, I haven't read the whole post, and I'm sure someone has already said it, but you're not going to get a representative sample here. People who DO have children who need to wear masks in the classroom are going to be over represented in your responses, because they feel this question applies specially to them, whereas the bog standard "no" will not bother posting.

PortalooSunset · 12/12/2020 18:59

Primary no (even though dc2 is 11 and required to wear one elsewhere).

Sixth form college yes. They've been really hot on it actually and seem to have been one step ahead of 'the rules' at all times.

My child would be very happy not to be called on to answer questions in class, so that would be a bonus

Yes you are right. I just wanted to know if there were more than a handful of schools don't it.

Jesus, susan you already had almost exactly this post deleted earlier today. Enough already.

So she could use it against other posters. Spectacularly missing the point they were making.

motherrunner · 12/12/2020 19:13

@donkeysliveaverylongtime. Don’t engage. Just report like I have. Dangerous ideology.

GingerbreadFairy · 12/12/2020 19:19

I think people underestimate how hard it is to be heard in a classroom, whilst wearing a mask. I know, because unfortunately I have to wear one.

I am happy to wear one to protect the students I work with, but it's the communication equivalent of walking in a lead suit all day.

Not sure why Susan is getting such a hard time. I didn't see her prior deleted post though.

Piggywaspushed · 12/12/2020 19:20

Because she says children who wear masks are brainwashed gingerbread?

Parker231 · 12/12/2020 19:21

Family in the US and masks are mandatory all day from kindergarten upwards.

TheSockMonster · 12/12/2020 19:27

Masks everywhere except seated for lunch, (outdoor) PE and on the playground as DS’s high school.

Initially it was masks just in corridors, communal areas and buses, but could be removed once seated in class. Changed to full time after half term. DS’s school is fortunate in that each year group is in a completely separate area of the building with no overlap. We were in Tier 1 prior to the last lockdown, Tier 2 now.

On the one hand it’s hard for DS who tends to come home with headaches on at least 2 days per week (was daily, but tried lots of different masks and found some that allow slightly easier breathing). On the other hand there have been a number of confirmed cases, including one in his tutor group, but no cases of in-school transmission, so it’s obviously working.

GingerbreadFairy · 12/12/2020 19:28

Agreed, 'brainwashed' is harsh. There are lots of complex reasons why students take extra measures at school (vulnerable parents/family maybe, general anxiety etc).

I can verify that it is a nightmare hearing people talking through a mask in a classroom though. I work up close to students and struggle to be heard sometimes.

MrsBlobby43 · 12/12/2020 19:39

Yes my DD wears one in class along with teachers and there's only been 1 case of a positive covid test at the school. Lots of other local schools are closed till after Christmas due to high levels of positive cases in classrooms.

Mumof3andlovingit · 12/12/2020 19:39

Tier 3 area and staff and students only wear masks in corridors not in classrooms

multivac · 12/12/2020 19:58

Perhaps Susan is one of the delightful mumsnet 'anti dementors' (AD) club faithfuls. I have no issue with people taking what they feel is a determinedly pragmatic approach to the pandemic. But forming a special club to sneer and smear those who feel differently, getting together every day in a Special Thread to chat about how stupid and pathetic the 'dementors' are and how clever they are in comparison... well, that seems a bit weird and unpleasant to me. And presumably at least some of them are teachers.

MoreW1ne · 12/12/2020 20:02

Yes all staff and students wear them at all times indoors unless eating/drinking.

Whereas I wear a mask all day and have no difficulty in communicating and feel quite comfortable wearing a light piece of fabric over my mouth and nose.

Susan hasn’t yet decided where ex’s tlr it is she teaches, so she’ll probably get quite a hard time until she manages to tell some semblance of the truth. Quite apart from being quite so unpleasant about her pupils.

Piggywaspushed · 12/12/2020 20:14

... and their parents.... and other teachers....
