Does your school require masks in the classroom?

I am trying to work out if heads can require children to wear masks in the classroom. There have been a few reports here of schools where this happens. I know most don't.

If your DC's school requires masks in the classroom, please say so. Any relevant details you can add about the school to understand why would be awesome too.

So she can use it against other posters in another thread

I wish there was less of this confrontational language. We are all just trying to live our lives happily and look after our children.

Secondary Greater Manchester... Yes mandated in classrooms since half term

RayOfSunshine2013 · 12/12/2020 15:38

No, and he wouldn't be in school if they did

BungleandGeorge · 12/12/2020 15:50

Yes at all times indoors, state secondary, 3 cases. I would struggle but hasn’t complained

Tinselandbaubauls · 12/12/2020 15:52

@notevenat20 - south east

Plibber · 12/12/2020 16:11

Yes. Independent secondary school in South London.

They started back in September with masks in corridors, and then moved to masks all the time (except for break and lunch) at the start of the second lockdown.

The teachers take their masks off when addressing their classes, though, and as DS2 is deaf, masks can be removed when he is working in a pair or a group.

I wasn't overly happy with them having to wear masks all day, but to their great credit they have just got on with it. Cases in the school have been very low, but I have no idea whether this is in any way due to face masks probably not

For those with DC in schools with masks in the class, do you feel your school is unique at least in your local area?

dementedpixie · 12/12/2020 16:22

No, because I'm in Scotland and all secondary schools have the same regulations

historyrocks · 12/12/2020 16:23

Yes, I’m in Scotland. All pupils (not just older ones) in DDs secondary school have to wear masks all of the time.

monkeytennis97 · 12/12/2020 16:25

No.

historyrocks · 12/12/2020 16:25

@dementedpixie that’s not the case. See my previous post about DDs school. Her’s require all children to wear a mask all of the time. A different secondary near us only requires the older children to do so.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2020 16:26

No but mandatory in corridors

dementedpixie · 12/12/2020 16:27

That's your school choosing to go beyond the regulations then.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2020 16:27

That’s secondary only

Was it not you that started a thread demanding posters admit they were wrong? Hmm

No masks in classrooms in any of the secondaries in my MAT.

monkeytennis97 · 12/12/2020 16:28

I've been wearing one to teach in since September though. Officially not allowed but it's been fine as have not been spoken to.

Kids are 'not allowed' but I let them if they want to in my lessons (I wish more would).

loulouljh · 12/12/2020 16:29

No thank goodness..

smaragda · 12/12/2020 16:31

Not in the U.K.-here masks are mandatory for anyone over the age of 12, indoors if more than one household, and outdoor. Kids over 12 wear masks at school

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 12/12/2020 16:32

Masks compulsory in corridors, students can wear them if they want in classrooms and are encouraged to do so. They don't have to wear them outside but most choose to. Hand sanitiser compulsory between lessons, tables cleaned before seat changes. Teachers must wear visors, they must also wear masks when not at the very front of the class. The visors cause more communication issues than the masks do it terms of interfering with the volume of speech.
Our school has strict covid procedures, in fact I don't think the school could do more but it hasn't stopped us having several cases nor has it stopped some staff being hospitalised.

Danglingmod · 12/12/2020 16:36

Not officially allowed in classrooms in my school. Unofficially, we turn a blind eye unless a child is using it to talk behind when they should be quiet.

Can I enquire before answering , as is my right, what you are going to use this data you are gathering for?

Nothing. I am just interested in what happens in practice in schools. Sometimes this isn't the same as what we are told should happen.

Not in class they don't.

I'm a bit surprised to see some posters whose DC are wearing masks in lessons because the DofE specifically prohibits it.
If teachers and children wore masks in class it would go some way to mitigate spread.

No not in classrooms tier 3 area , in corridors only (secondary)
Not at all in primary

donkeysliveaverylongtime · 12/12/2020 17:09

Nope , sorry don't get it.

Are you saying that schools everywhere are flouting DfE guidance because MN for months has told you the answer to this.

Where do they wear masks in yours DCs' school (s)?
