Has Boris got the balls to cancel Xmas for London?

Gobacktothe90s · 11/12/2020 19:55

Obviously the answer is no, but the huge increase in cases in London should tell anyone it's not a good idea for Xmas mixing. How high will the rates go before he has to step in?

I think rather than cancel Xmas for the worst hit areas the only thing he would do is cancel Xmas mixing for everyone and do a complete u turn rather than single London out.
If however the North west still had high rates he would have no hesitation In stopping the north west mixing at Xmas but allowed other areas to mix.

Bunsygirl yes there will be some people from the north who treat southerners appallingly as you say just as some southerners treat northerners, you are missing the point however that this government is openly treating the north as second class and ignoring them and punishing them repeatedly and bending the rules to protect London no matter the cost

I do feel that the North/South divide is now toppling over into anger and more in the north. I’m not sure how much the government know or even care about this.

I’m in S. Yorks. I remember the miners strike which was seismic in N/S divide. And the bankrupting of Liverpool. The levels of anger are similar to those times.

Has no one read the link someone has post to say 60 odd tier 3 areas are getting rapid testing including in the north

Where was this rapid testing from September when it was promised when schools in the north west were closing every 2 mins? It's too little too late
OP posts:
timeforanewstart · 12/12/2020 11:25

@Gobacktothe90s i don't remember them promising it then first it was mentioned was when they did it liverpool , then again when they announced new tiers they said tier 3 areas would access it
But it the capacity is only just ready for rapid testing then Its just timing that london is getting then
Lots on this post are saying only london is getting the testing ?

TheGremlinsAreComing · 12/12/2020 11:28

Topically of rapid testing is only just available it's London that gets it first. How about Manchester? Bradford? Birmingham? Places that have been struggling with high cases for months instead of somewhere that has only just spiked? Oh that's right, because only London matters.

They promised Salford the rapid tests and random testing but it didn't happen from what I can remember

@TheGremlinsAreComing so what someone has posted below about 67 councils getting is that different testing ?

I’m in a massive Tier 3 city. We’re not on the list.,,

timeforanewstart · 12/12/2020 11:41

Yes they failed to deliver on time due to lack of things needed but it is being rolled out in more than just london from what I can see and many on here are saying its not ?

TheGremlinsAreComing · 12/12/2020 12:33

@timeforanewstart I'm saying we've been in tier 3/very high risks for months, why were we not offered testing? And why, now it is being rolled out, does London come first???

HallFloor · 12/12/2020 12:48

I've obviously misinterpreted the news or got my geography wrong but wasn't Liverpool the first place to get mass testing? Grin

I do think to a degree rapid testing didn't help Liverpool. It came too late and wasn't targeted. Places close to Liverpool which didn't get mass testing have followed a very similar pattern of cases. Liverpool and Warrington were probably more beneficiaries of the right restrictions at the right time and weren't suffering from restriction fatigue.

I think the situation could have been avoided if mass testing had have been targeted in the right places early on. For example in schools or certain venues in towns and cities.

And this still isn't being done for the north but is being done for London...

Part of this is it wasn't available previously when it was needed in the north and the crisis is now particularly worrying in london and kent... But im weary of the blanket ideas of the south over the north / mass testing is the solution.

madroid · 12/12/2020 13:01

@TheGremlinsAreComing

Could it be that London has a population of 9million with the potential to act as a massive covid reservoir to reinfect the rest of the country? I can see the logic of not letting it get out of hand in the biggest city in the country.

AnyFucker · 12/12/2020 13:23

A population of 2 million + that has been in "special measures" pretty much since March ? (Manchester). No signs of mass testing here.

That's quite a "reservoir"

nancy75 · 12/12/2020 13:40

Manchester is on the list of places I linked to earlier

AnyFucker · 12/12/2020 13:54

I live here, and I can give you my lived experience that there is absolutely no sign of mass testing in Manchester.

nancy75 · 12/12/2020 14:13

Did you read the article? It’s from the Mail but every newspaper is reporting the same. Testing being rolled out in 67 places across the country, one of the places on the list is Manchester.

TheGremlinsAreComing · 12/12/2020 14:19

Some people on this thread are being purposefully obtuse, AnyFucker. Clearly us in the North don't even understand what's going on in our own cities Confused

TheGremlinsAreComing · 12/12/2020 14:25

Leeds and Bradford alone have a combined population of over 1million people, and they're not huge cities.

The combined population of the North and the Midlands is over 25 million people.

middleager · 12/12/2020 15:28

But Tier 3 Walsall isn't on the list. Cases are rife in schools there.

This year it was routinely ranked the highest threat to life from Covid based on risk rankings, including deprivation, care provision, lots of multi generational living.

middleager · 12/12/2020 15:32

It was ranked consistently with Middlesborough as the highest threat to life from Covid in the UK. They stopped publishing this table, but since September, the situation in schools there has been catastrophic, yet students catching Covid at a rate of 2-3 cases a day in many schools, and not being offered the testing.

Do you believe everything you read in the newspapers @nancy75 ?

Or would you be trying to fucking gaslight me ?

@AnyFucker

Yep, that’s right - I’ve hacked the website to every national newspaper in the country & planted a false story about COVID testing - just to gaslight you. Or maybe I've just linked to something that’s actually there, that says they are rolling out testing in 67 different places?
