London

Heard it mentioned on this morning’s radio that cases are rising in London and that it’s rumoured London will be put into tier 3. Obviously no one knows if or when for sure, but anyone know the likely timing and how this will fit in with the ‘Xmas amnesty’?

I have to say I’ve been really worried about December since the lockdown easing was announced. People seem to be going about life pretty much as normal with the exception of some half hearted mask wearing.

The next review is on the 14th for the 16th, I believe. And so far the tier that you’re in doesn’t affect the Christmas amnesty, you can do that regardless, so unless they change something, it won’t affect that.

It’s almost certainly going to mean we’re probably back in lockdown in January, I think, but that’s likely the price of the amnesty regardless.

Youngatheart00 · 09/12/2020 11:15

Yeah, I agree.

So the likelihood will be London in tier 3 from the 16th....

Is the review on the 14th or the 16th? I'm supposed to be meeting friends on the 16th - may bring it forward if we may well be in Tier 3 on the 16th!

Youngatheart00 · 09/12/2020 15:08

I believe the next review is the 14th for implementation on the 16th but not sure what time of day. It’s grim, oh so grim.

I'd be amazed if London was put in Tier 3 for just a week (pre Christmas amnesty) given the massive impact this will have on retail and hospitality given the time of year. I think it's far more likely to happen after Christmas, if it happens at all.

Youngatheart00 · 09/12/2020 15:23

Yeah I guess there’s a big political angle to it though as if case numbers rise past the level where cities like Liverpool, Manchester etc were put into tier 2....how will they excuse it?

It’s just a complete nightmare

I can’t see London going into tier 3 before Christmas, I think there will be limited virus impact between review date and “Christmas bubbling” and there would be massive economic impact. I think there will however be a lot of press leading up to it, to encourage people to be more careful.
It would be interesting to see updated figures on age of those infected etc. Today’s figures have 2,550 cases in London out of daily total 16,578, London population is c8.9million. If The U.K. was to have a completely equal infection rate across the country, London would be expected to have 2,234 infections, so currently has roughly 10% more, how problematic that is will depend on who these cases are affecting.

Delatron · 09/12/2020 17:01

Yes I kind of think it’s too late on the 16th to have an impact before Christmas yet the economic impact would be huge for the hospitality industry.

Surely it’s the indoor mixing of households against the rules that’s causing the problem not people sat outside at a pub.

lurker101 · 09/12/2020 17:07

@Delatron yes, I was out at the weekend (only indoors with my own household) and saw several tables of 6 exchanging gifts in a restaurant.... makes me think they’re unlikely to live together otherwise surely you would exchange gifts at home. I think some more enforcement of this (by council or police, not hospitality industry) is required.
A lot of people shopping in central on Saturday did not seem to be Londoners either (lots asking for directions, queueing for touristy shops, and generally lost looking). Highly likely people came from higher infection areas in Essex/Kent

London can't afford the kind of scenes in the shopping areas again for the next two weekends. Not when there's a 5 day free for all at Christmas.
Toomanycats99 · 09/12/2020 17:12

Hope not! We have a night in hotel and Panto booked. (I fall under London anyway before anyone says about crossing areas!) was really looking forward to it.

lurker101 · 09/12/2020 17:16

@User158340 yes, more enforcement where rules are being broken is required. I think that’s why there’s a lot of talk of Tier 3, to scare people that aren’t complying into complying. We left the central shopping areas as it was too crowded on Saturday. Although I doubt tier 3 would affect that as I think all shops can remain open in tier 3, or are they closed?

Not sure what you mean about only one week. Tier 3 means closure of hospitality and other indoor leisure, and this is not being relaxed during the 5 day period - restaurants and pubs in tier 3 areas will remain closed.
IntermittentParps · 09/12/2020 17:20

I fucking hope not. I'm in London and am booked to go to the coast in England for the Xmas period. I desperately need the break and change of scene. I will be sorely tempted to just do a Barnard Castle if we are put in Tier 3. (well not really seeing as DP and I don't have Covid so wouldn't be knowingly travelling with it).
