So cold at school

My dc are really cold at school. I know why all the windows, doors etc are open and I tend to just layer up at home so not averse to layers. They go in with five layers on top, wondering about digging their salopettes out for legs. They have been told they can't have hood up. Due to a medical condition they do get colder than normal. Have ordered fingerless gloves. Anyone else found any solutions?

Thermal leggings under trousers? We are all cold tbf. I've never taught in a coat. Now mine never comes off!

OP, it IS cold. My heaters broke in my classroom last week and I couldn't warm up all evening either.

Could you try leggings under their school trousers? My youngest gets very cold and seems happy with leggings, school trousers, 2 pairs of socks, a vest, long sleeved top, school top and 2 fleece cardigans.
Her sister refuses to wear extra layers and hasn't complained (although I suspect autism). Some of her friends are wearing gillets.

Yes was also going to suggest long johns.

Fleece wrist warmers and a fleece snood to tuck into their jumpers and cover the neck.

If you can see at all there's a really easy pattern below. I made several for DD out of old fleece Pajama bottoms she'd outgrown.

The radiators are under windows so heat just goes straight out. Half of dd's year group are SI so lessons are streaming anyway, she just wants to stay home and be warm while working, and this is not like her at all.

Proper base layers for skiing are really warm (ugly but effective). I got a merino wool-blend base layer top for my DD last year, expensive but brilliant in lieu of a cotton vest and leggings. You need to wear it right against the skin and then the beauty is, if you do warm up, any sweat isn't trapped which would make you shiver when you cool down again, rather it is wicked away so you stay warm and snug. You might be able to pick something up on ebay Used.

I'm not sure that's a complete solution but it might help.

Mine are the same they don't warm up all evening and they are not allowed to wear any outdoor clothing in class, not even fingerless gloves.

They've been wearing fleece lined tights and thermal vests with a thin vest under that.

Yr6 - yr11. Very close to going to pick youngest up at lunchtime (hates lunchtime anyway) and warming up in car!

Can they stay home? This will make them ill.

I can’t believe this is happening. Not allowed to have hood up is insane, they need hats too!

I'd challenge the no coats policy.

Mine has been wearing an under armour base layer for running. Its long sleeve and seems to really make a difference close to skin rather than just another bulky layer. Could they wear a plain polo neck under school shirt? Its so frustrating that this is allowed to happen!

Both mine are layered up. Tights under trousers. Socks over tights . Base layers.

My washing basket is full daily. Then they place restrictions on what they can wear, as if I have endless supplies of plain.black hoodies/ sweaters dd2s ended up wearing all sorts jumper wise I cant keep up otherwise. I just forked out fir 3 base layers

Primark do" faux fur" lined leggings and they are brilliant. £6 a pair. I wear them under trackies to do the horses in the morning and stay warm. Also they need to be able to wear a hat. When dd has to ride un the cold I put those instant hand warmers in her pockets

My DD is very slim and suffering badly with the cold at school. She now wears thermal tights or fleece lined leggings (Primark), a thermal (granny style!) long sleeved t shirt, her school shirt and I have lined (hand sewn) her blazer with a cheap fleece. School have now said they can wear plain navy or black sweatshirts under their blazers but DD ends up feeling really restricted/can’t bend her arms when she does. A couple of times when it has been really cold she has worn a tight old fleece with the sleeves cut off like a vest next to her skin.

I understand why the schools are doing this, but it’s awful watching my DD cry before school because she is going to be so cold.

I posted a thread last month about this issue. It was very heavily posted on with lots of suggestions to help.

We went for the Aldi base layers in the end. My daughter is much warmer now although has red raw skin on her face due to the cold. I’m sending her to school today smothered in Vaseline. It really sucks right now and I feel awful for her.

Still insisting on uniform seems a bit mad. They have the windows open at dds school but they are allowed to wear anything they want so thick hoodies etc

Thats what pisses me off the most. I mean every school is at it so if you have say three local schools that's 4500 kids. All hitting the same shop/supplier for the same bloody jumpers. I just tried to purchase a secind fir dd1 and they are sold out.

If they could wear perfectly good hoodies they have at home....

Also, what’s the deal if you want to withdraw your child from school this year, would they be allowed to repeat the year next year?

A few of the instant hand warmers (the ones you recharge in a pan of water at night) will give them a little boost. Proper base layers, fingerless mittens.

If you don't want the hats/hood battle, a wood headband to cover ears?

The thing is the clothes that are properly warm are the expensive ones, DH buys this type of thing as he does things that involve being out for long periods in the cold and the warm kit costs £100s

It sound awful, it's so cold this week.

My classroom is freezing, in fairness it always is as I work in early years and the majority of the day we are 'free flow' so the door is permanently open
Layers are the key but it's tough as sitting still doesn't help and I find once I'm chilled to the bone, I just can't get warm again!

Sorry to hear that Nothing worse than being cold! M and S have Thermal Vests for girls /boys 2 to 16.Also smaller adult sizes should be OK for the older one as well.This weather I have lived in mine!
