Where are the rest of the vaccines?

The media is going on and on and on about the 800k vaccines that honestly won’t really touch the sides of this pandemic. When are the next coming or is this it until the New Year?

Unfortunately I think this is it for this year unless the Oxford gets approval very soon. I am very disheartened now.

actiongirl1978 · 07/12/2020 15:48

They said 4m by Xmas this morning

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/12/2020 15:51

My question is why can't they antibody test everyone? Wouldn't that save vaccines or is the number too low to make a difference? I assume they've thought about it because unlike many on the internet I don't think I'm brighter than experts!

ErrolTheDragon · 07/12/2020 15:51

They're being manufactured at an astonishing rate, I'd have said.

Antibodies don’t last that long, just a matter of time.

There is no guarantee of getting more. Don't let the hoopla fool you, this is no hole in one by Boris's government. He has no idea where the next lot is coming from.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/12/2020 15:56

The Oxford vaccine is getting checked by the regulators now. If it is passed as safe, it will be rolled out ASAP as we’ve made enough for the population.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/12/2020 15:57

We should know if the Oxford vaccine has passed in a few weeks.

microscopicbastard · 07/12/2020 15:58

weeeks?

I am expecting any day now, checking the news constantly! Grin

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/12/2020 16:00

Maybe two more weeks.

Mindymomo · 07/12/2020 16:02

I think they are hoping the mass rollout will be with the Oxford vaccine. We’ve had texts from GP surgery that they are hoping to roll out the Oxford one starting in January.

As I understand it, antibodies aren’t a good guide to covid immunity because they disappear, which is fine because your immune system knows how to make more, but there isn’t a simple and cheap way to test for T cell immunity.
viccat · 07/12/2020 16:15

There is also an agreement between countries (Novax group) that means no country will receive vaccinations for more than 20% of their population before other countries who are part of the group. This means the UK or any other country won't be able to jump the queue in any way; as the vaccines are manufactured it will be a global operation to distribute them.

Bathroom12345 · 07/12/2020 16:27

I thought it was just me who had missed something. 800,000 will only cover 400,000 people. Better than nothing but I am finding the media obsession with the 800k vaccines annoying.

WHERE ARE THE REST OF THEM? Talking about the biggest vaccination project in history isnt really true is it until there are millions and millions of the vaccine being available.

I'm not an expert either but I can guess lots of possible reasons:

(1) as pp said antibodies don't last (2) false negatives don't get vaccinated (3) makes process slower / more complicated / more visits / more expensive. A double dose is already needed and they have to keep track of which vaccines people were given; with testing they have to keep track of who has been tested and the results too (4) fewer people might take up vaccine if they have to get tested first.

Bathroom12345 · 07/12/2020 16:29

I completely understand the 20% figure but that is 14 m doses

I get the impression they’re definitely banking on Oxford. Please please please let it pass!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/12/2020 19:31

Yes they are banking on the Oxford one. I think by Christmas we will know if it’s passed. The Pfizer vaccine has more data than the Oxford so I really hope they don’t need to get more data, but if they do it shouldn’t be too long.

I know we all are desperate, but a year ago we didn’t know how to test for this virus and we’ve made tests that work, and now a vaccine. It’s going at the speed of light scientifically.

Bathroom12345 · 07/12/2020 19:43

I don’t live that far from Oxford. COME ON OXFORD! WE ARE RIGHT BEHIND YOU, MAKE US PROUD,

OP posts:
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/12/2020 19:46

It’s out of their hands now! You need to get the MHRA to hurry up. Take them some pizza and coke for an all night sitting.

cantkeepawayforever · 07/12/2020 20:11

I should imagine that this is it, unless and until Oxford is approved - which it is likely to be, however poor it is comparatively, as a no-deal Brexit will make it all but impossible (both practically and politically) to get access to any other vaccines.

Thanks Boris.

Bathroom12345 · 07/12/2020 20:42

I agree that this could well be it but didn’t Pfizer say there were millions coming before end of the year

OP posts:
Iris1600 · 07/12/2020 20:48

Dr June Raine from the MHRA was positively beaming when she talked about the Oxford vaccine to Andrew Marr yesterday - I’m hoping that means good news soon. The Oxford vaccine isn’t “poor” - it’s highly effective. She also said that they had rehearsed for a no deal Brexit and are fully prepared.

RaspberryCoulis · 07/12/2020 20:48

Why do you want millions all at once of a vaccine which is tricky to transport and store? You don't. You want regular deliveries of small quantities which can be stored, used, then replaced with the next lot to come in. There are only so many nurses, restrictions on how many people you can physically vaccinate in one day, there will be a world wide shortage of those ultra-low temperature freezers...

They are doing absolutely the right thing getting the Pfizer out to the most vulnerable. When the Oxford one comes on stream there are fewer storage issues but even then you don't want 50 million doses delivered to the NHS all at the same time.

Covidfears · 07/12/2020 20:52

Haven’t the Oxford ballsed up their testing and now have an error dosing proving over 90% effective compared with the 62% with the correct dosage? Where the hell do they go with that? Does it mean the most vulnerable are going to get the crap 62% dose while they do some more research on the accidental dose? I can imagine people being pretty pissed off with that. Especially as it looks likely that the Oxford vaccine can only be used once as it relies on the body being unfamiliar with the chimpanzee host.
