Nasal flu vaccine side effects

Son had nasal flu vaccine last Thursday. Has developed what I would say is a cold, really snotty, feeling unwell, no temperature but flushed. Anyone else's children developed these symptoms after the nasal flu vaccine? Would you automatically test for covid if they had a fever? (He's doesn't at the moment! Hoping he doesn't!)

Both my sons aged 6 and 3 had runny noses following their flu sprays. They had them weeks apart and identical symptoms afterwards so I'm pretty sure it was a flu spray side effect. It was clear stuff streaming out (sorry for tmi). Eldest was a bit under the weather for a day but no other symptoms. It cleared up very quickly. Hope it's the same for you.

Thanks @Fabuleuse hes 9 and never had symptoms after the vaccine before. Just hoping no fever develops!

My daughter was really poorly after last year’s spray and given the symptoms I’d probably have had to get her tested if it had been this year. (She went on to actually get flu about four weeks later).

Seymourcrelborne · 06/12/2020 19:20

If he developed a fever I would get him tested definitely. It seems like he has a really heavy cold.

My little one has what I would say is a cold but not had the flu jab but I still have had her tested just because he doesn't have the temperature doesn't mean it couldn't be. There are lots off symptoms With everything going on and rather be safe than sorry! X

I was in this position a few weeks ago. Dd2 had temp of 40. Rang helpline and they said normally I could wait a day but as there was an outbreak in another room at her nursery UmI had to test. Negative of course! I'd give them a call

Ronia · 06/12/2020 19:52

Mine both were a bit under the weather and snotty in the 2-3 days after the vaccine, which we were told could happen. No temp or anything though so didn't test or isolate. Also, could have been a big standard cold of course, but it's rare for them to spontaneously have colds on the same day - they tend to pass these things back and forth so symptoms are staggered Grin

About half my class had either runny noses or bunged up ones this year after their flu vaccine. A couple were definitely a bit off colour and lethargic for a few days.

Hellomoonstar · 06/12/2020 20:17

I haven’t given them this year one. But last year both dc got snotty and under the weather few hours later. Dc are booked to get it next week. I hope they don’t get sick

Seymourcrelborne · 06/12/2020 20:20

I don't remember him ever being poorly after having it before. Hoping he wakes up fresh as a daisy tomorrow!

I would say that he has a cold and it’s coincidental that he has just had the spray. You wouldn’t expect side effects 3.5 days later.

My DD had the flu vaccine on Fri and developed a runny nose / cold over the weekend.

Foobydoo · 06/12/2020 20:40

DD reacted to it, she has runny nose, aches and pains, felt unwell and a mild rash. She was offside for over a week.
She didn't have a temperature but I was looking into covid tests just in case and im sure the advice said don't book a covid test for a child if temperature is within 5 days of a flu vaccination.

IggyAce · 06/12/2020 20:41

The nasal flu vaccine triggered my dcs asthma two years in a row. He no longer gets the nasal vaccine he has the jab instead.

Rudolphian · 06/12/2020 20:44

She had a runny nose starting about a couple.pf hours after. Then a really bad cough that has still not completely gone.
She didnt get a fever. But the nurse said if she gets a fever within the first 48 hours we dont have to get her tested.

maureenfrombarnsley · 06/12/2020 20:48

No cold symptoms but my son was sick as a dog the evening of the vaccine. Woke up happy though and nothing since with any of us. Weird.

Nodney · 06/12/2020 21:09

My eldest (13) suddenly felt sick 24hrs after he'd had it. He was ok after about half an hr but he went v grey! My little two had no symptoms

YouLando · 06/12/2020 22:37

My 11 year old DD has been feeling under the weather since yesterday evening, and until this thread I'd forgotten that she had her flu vaccine at school on Friday.

She doesn't seem to have a temperature, but has had a sore throat, runny nose, bit of a headache, sneezing. I was thinking of booking a cv test tomorrow, but it could be related to the flu vaccine? Not sure what to do really.

YouLando · 06/12/2020 22:40

Also, she's never reacted this way to the flu vaccine, as far as I can remember.

trunumber · 06/12/2020 22:44

DS was really poorly 3 days after his flu spray. The doctor said that was a normal amount of time for side effects to kick in. Muscle pains, headache, very very tired, sick. It passed within the day
