Nottingham Christmas Market?

38 replies

AaronPurr · 06/12/2020 09:02

Is anyone else confused about why this has been allowed to go ahead, despite Nottingham being in tier 3?

Are there any other Christmas Markets running this year, or have the rest been cancelled?

@Coasterfan

Have you seen the pictures from yesterday? Looks like it was absolute carnage. No link as the ones I ve seem have been on personal Facebook pages but what the fuck is wrong with people???!!!
I'd imagine everyone thought that not many others would be there.

What I don't understand is this - you plan to go to the Christmas market. When you get there, you see that it is much busier than you expected.
Do you a) change plan and go somewhere else / go back home
or b) think fuck it and just cram in with everyone else.

I'd have done a) pre pandemic too, tbh, can't stand big crowds of people shambling about.

TheGreatWave · 06/12/2020 17:49

Most people would just think b), they're there, they may as well stop.

The lack of foresight, planning and strategy on the part of our political leadership is woeful at times.

The market is run by the Mellors group. I understand that the council were assured there would be sufficient stewards to manage the flow of visitors. Not sure if these stewards existed or not, or if there was anyone in charge for the stewards to alert.

Personally I still wouldn't have let it go ahead, but that's because I know how that company treat their staff. If you treat your staff poorly, chances are you'll be lax on public safety as well.

A couple of my friends went yesterday and posted pictures on Facebook about how busy it was and how ridiculous the crowds were, but they still went. The irony that they were contributing to the crowds seemed lost on them... I normally love the Christmas markets, but giving it all a wide swerve this year.

I thought most of them had been cancelled. I know the one in Belfast was, it was always completely rammed at weekends. Very different from zoos, gardens etc were people are a lot more spread out anyway.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/12/2020 21:05

I'm in Nottingham, there was uproar on social media about it going ahead. People are already very unhappy about being in tier 3 when numbers have dropped. This ent have helped get us out of it.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/12/2020 21:06

@GrumpySausage that picture of the tea rooms empty tables made me really sad.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/12/2020 21:08

I was I. Town on Friday it was very quiet. But that was probably because of the weather!

It won't be reopening this year. For the best, but I do feel for the stall holders with all the stock they will have bought in and be unable to shift.

Agreed. They will have purchased additional stock specifically because the market was due to run until Christmas. Whilst i'm glad they've seen sense and cancelled the market, it will still have an impact on the stall holders.

Should have left it open

@Waxonwaxoff0

Here we go again with "what's wrong with people". Same as when people were going to the beach back in the summer. Give over for goodness sake, it's boring now.
