Thread to ask stupid questions about the vaccine

FiftyWaysToWinInDenver · 03/12/2020 20:12

I know several high-risk people who are very concerned about the vaccine so can I ask anyone to point me in the direction of reliable sources about how safe it is etc. I just want to give proper info, not necessarily force them to change their mind btw.

They ask things like how is it safe when it’s taken far less time than usual? Also can someone explain the chimpanzee aspect as I’ve read that’s a normal thing for vaccines but I’m not a scientist so I can’t explain it well!

If you have your own stupid question feel free to ask!

When am I going to get it??

Only question I have about it at all.

Anyone asking will I get microchipped or suchlike can go and do one 😂

DisgruntledPelican · 03/12/2020 20:21

how is it safe when it’s taken far less time than usual?

It was explained well on another thread that vaccine side-effects are monitored and collated by number of trials/doses given , not over time. The amount of money and expertise and volunteers that has gone into developing these vaccines has meant that the numbers could be reached more quickly.

(Wish I could find the thread because they said it much better than that!)

If they are higher risk (CEV) I think the best thing you can do is remind them to talk to their consultant about it at their next appointment

@raviolidreaming that link is a great read, thanks for posting

I heard briefly on the news that it’s not suitable for people with autoimmune conditions. Does anyone know if this will be the same for all the vaccines, for example the other one that needs to be kept in cold storage, would that be unsuitable too? Sad

Moltenpink · 03/12/2020 20:40

I have also heard from a friend that you need to have had the flu vaccine before having the COVID vaccine, is there any truth in this?

No truth whatsoever. You shouldn't take them too close together, which is why NHS were being encouraged to have theirs in November to be ready for December.

If you haven't had a flu jab it's not an issue.

The one that’s been approved (Pfizer) is the cold storage one And may not be best for those with autoimmune conditions/on autoimmune meds.

The Oxford one should be better for them but there is a trial happening in Manchester to see for that specific group.

Is it normal for vaccines to state that the affects on fertility are unknown? I genuinely don't know as I don't normally download documents about vaccines from .Gov

Shouldn't the affects be known ideally before vaccinating the entire world? This is a genuine question by the way. I haven't a clue about this and I was shit at biology.

Moltenpink · 03/12/2020 20:53

@Feminist10101 thank you, that sounds hopeful.

Meredithgrey1 · 03/12/2020 20:53

I tried to volunteer for the vaccine trials but was unsuitable because I’m breastfeeding. Am I able to safely get the vaccine while still breastfeeding, if I was unsuitable for it to be trialled on?

Feminist10101 · 03/12/2020 20:55

Not enough known about impact on pregnant/breastfeeding women yet. So I doubt you could get it yet.

That would take years.

They didn’t have years.

PickleASturgeon · 03/12/2020 20:59

How much money will the pharmaceutical companies make from the vaccine?

This thread is about auto immune diseases and vaccines, they may be able to help you

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/12/2020 21:03

So when will we know what the affects on fertility are? When there's no babies born? I'm sure I've seen this film before. I don't think it was a feel good type movie...

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/12/2020 21:09

Am I seriously the only person on this entire thread who finds the statement attached even slightly worrying? Nobody else at all is even slightly concerned? At least we avoid the 0.5% chance of dying though.

I’m done having children so that doesn’t bother me.

I’ve lost a few people to Covid. I also have several colleagues and close friends who were perfectly healthy who now have life changing issues after having had Covid. Whilst we all have to die sometime, it’s the potential damage that concerns me more.

UncleBunclesHouse · 03/12/2020 21:21

@Moltenpink yes these people likely not to be suitable for vaccine but this is where the drugs - drugs already existing but being tested for new indications - which can help reduce symptoms come in

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/12/2020 21:27

That makes sense ODFOD and I daresay for many that will be a fair choice to make. But the plan is to vaccinate everyone isn't it? I genuinely do not know if all vaccines come with that disclaimer. But it seems a bit hasty in my mind to save the 0.5% whilst not being 100% sure the human race can continue to reproduce long after we're all dead.

And I found the comment "they didn't have time to check" a bit mind blowing to be honest. A bit "well as long as we're ok fuck the next generation". But then I've thought that several times during the pandemic.

gillianan · 03/12/2020 21:33

but there's no reason to assume this vaccine would cause infertility any more than to assume you might suddenly grow an extra head. I think you need to read more about what the vaccine is and how it works.
