Thread to ask stupid questions about the vaccine

101 replies

FiftyWaysToWinInDenver · 03/12/2020 20:12

I know several high-risk people who are very concerned about the vaccine so can I ask anyone to point me in the direction of reliable sources about how safe it is etc. I just want to give proper info, not necessarily force them to change their mind btw.

They ask things like how is it safe when it’s taken far less time than usual? Also can someone explain the chimpanzee aspect as I’ve read that’s a normal thing for vaccines but I’m not a scientist so I can’t explain it well!

If you have your own stupid question feel free to ask!

But there's not NO reason to think it won't impact fertility. I mean there is no evidence to suggest it does (and how could it? It's way too soon to tell). But there are theoretical reasons as to why it might and why they cannot rule it out and say this.

The vaccinations are expected to produce antibodies against spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2. However, spike proteins also contain syncytin-homologous proteins, which are essential for the formation of the placenta in mammals such as humans. A vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 could trigger an immune reaction against syncytin-1, as otherwise infertility of indefinite duration could result in vaccinated women.

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/12/2020 21:41

I thought a thread titled "stupid questions to ask about the vaccine" might be a good place to ask this question. I wouldn't have even thought about infertility had it not been for paragraph 4.6 on a document downloaded from our government website.

The only science exam I took was Physics at GCSE and all I remember about that was electrical circuits and lens refraction. It's a genuine question and I'm happy to be educated but so far the only responses have been they didn't have time, someone who wasn't bothered as not personally affected (understandable) and I need to read more about how it works.

I guess this is NOT a thread for answering questions at all...

Zxyzoey31 · 03/12/2020 21:43

Do the vaccines stop transmission because if they don't and only reduce symptom severity what is the point in vaccinating low risk people? It won't protect the vulnerable who cant have the vaccine if there is still transmission.

@confuseddotcom090

Sorry cross posted with you. That is more the information I was looking for so thank you

Doublebubblebubble · 03/12/2020 21:44

When can I get it?

I'm 33. I dont want to say I'm my mums carer but I help her out a lot and shes going through her second bout of facial cancer this year.

Im a bit overweight but thats the only thing ive got going against me.

My dp is 35 and an essential worker. Hes keen to get it too.

Doublebubblebubble · 03/12/2020 21:49

@MrsGradyOldLady

Am I seriously the only person on this entire thread who finds the statement attached even slightly worrying? Nobody else at all is even slightly concerned? At least we avoid the 0.5% chance of dying though.
@MrsGradyOldLady did you read the fact check from Rueters? I'm guessing no.

How much money will the pharmaceutical companies make from the vaccine?

I'm sorry I can't provide a link right now but I understand the most promising vaccination is being developed not-for-profit.
Not the American one, the other one, sorry I'm in a rush now but incase the thread takes off I'm putting that out there!

HopeAndDriftWood · 03/12/2020 21:53

The fertility aspect would put me off, too. But I’m 30, so I think it’ll be a while before they offer it to anyone near my age bracket anyway.

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/12/2020 21:55

@doublebubblebubble I did if you mean the second link on my image.

I'm guessing you didn't read that particular link though as that article was in response to claims that the vaccine deliberately sterilsed people rather than refuting our own governments factsheet that states the affects are not known.

Is there another Reuters article that refutes the information on the government website? If so I'd be interested in reading this.

Bubble5123 · 03/12/2020 22:17

@MrsGradyOldLady I think that is a really good question. I have no idea of the answer but would be interested to know too.

SheepandCow · 03/12/2020 22:20

@MrsGradyOldLady

Is it normal for vaccines to state that the affects on fertility are unknown? I genuinely don't know as I don't normally download documents about vaccines from .Gov

Shouldn't the affects be known ideally before vaccinating the entire world? This is a genuine question by the way. I haven't a clue about this and I was shit at biology.

I don't expect it can be worse than Long Covid. Which does appear to effect fertility - at least, male fertility. We don't know yet whether it also impacts female fertility.
QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 22:24

@MrsGradyOldLady, I believe that some anti vaxx propaganda that started in America started questioning the impact on fertility, however no vaccine has ever affected fertility and the way vaccines work is immediate and not at all with interfering with the reproductive system. Same anti vaxx campaigns posted photos of children with Thalodomide and stated that Bill Gate was placing small trackers in the vaccine.

Honestly, they are complete nutters and are still questioning the existence of Covid. And will make any stupid statements to put irrational doubts in the minds of people.

They're still working on the second phase order of priority. One proposal was to prioritise by occupation. I'd assume informal carers would be included.

I'd also hope to see the 40-50 age group - as the risk of death doubles from 0.2 under 40, to 0.4 over 40. Perhaps because it's common to develop underlying conditions like diabetes and hypertension from 40 - often initially without obvious symptoms.

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 22:33

Stop with your stupid scaremongering about fertility.

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/12/2020 22:36

I understand what you're saying but it's not really answering why that paragraph is there on the government website.

Is it a general disclaimer on all vaccines?

I'll admit I was directed to that website from what I'd read on Twitter. It doesn't affect me personally as I'm past child bearing age but that doesn't mean I don't want to be a grandparent some day. It's not really answering my question to just say there are nutters who even deny covid exists.

My question is - for clarity as I've perhaps convoluted my original question - should it not be a concern that affects on fertility are unknown on a vaccine programmed to be rolled out worldwide? And if not why not?

SheepandCow · 03/12/2020 22:37

It's not scaremongering. Research has indicated that Covid or Long Covid may cause male fertility problems.

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 22:37

Ah yes, the Twitter bible. Lots of thrusted stuff on there.

MrsGradyOldLady · 03/12/2020 22:38

@QueenBlueberries

Stop with your stupid scaremongering about fertility.
Maybe stop it with your non answers on a thread specifically set up to answer stupid questions? Just a thought....
QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 22:38

So sorry @SheepandCow I was trying to question the posts by @MrsGradyOldLady .

gillianan · 03/12/2020 22:38

because there is no reason to assume there would be any effects.. the way the vaccine works has no reason to impact it. its like there could be a note saying there's no evidence it won't make you grow an extra leg

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 22:39

You are answering your own Stupid questions, @MrsGradyOldLady.

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 22:41

They haven’t proved that it won’t make my hair grow faster either.

Did you miss the bit where I linked to our government website? Jesus. I'm going out on a limb here but I'm gonna take a wild guess you don't do a job where you actually need to think. Or read. Or digest. Or listen to other peoples opposing views. I'm close aren't I? Do I get a prize?
SheepandCow · 03/12/2020 22:42

@QueenBlueberries
Sorry for the confusion.

Off topic but sort of related to Covid talk, blueberries are good for the immune system. Smile
