Masks are here to stay aren’t they?

JVT seemed to make that very clear tonight.

I’m gutted if this is true. I only have hearing in 1 ear and rely on lip reading more than I realised. I find masks awful and avoid going anywhere where I have to wear one .

No. I think it will be something that will not continue as soon as we’re all vaccinated. But it’s all about choice. If people want to wear them, then of course they will do,

UnlimitedUnspecific · 02/12/2020 21:35

@QueenOfTheDoubleWide

I think masks are far preferable to inconsiderate people coughing, sneezing and grotching their germs all over me. I hope they do stay even if just for when people have a cold or virus
I hope they stay as a courtesy thing - if you have a streaming cold etc, to stop other people catching it. Greater consideration for other people can be one thing we have learnt the last few months hopefully. (with usual caveats re. exemptions from mask-wearing etc).

However, it won't stop in January 2021 given that the vaccination programme will be barely underway by then. The main group responsible for transmission (healthy young adults) will be last to get any vaccination and until they are vaccinated, masks, SD etc will remain.
@AcornAutumn I'll take that bet! I'm sticking with early Spring being a big reduction in where they are mandated. Possibly a roll back to just public transport as they first came in as.
I’ll put a virtual £50 on June 24th at the earliest.

AcornAutumn · 02/12/2020 21:37

PS I’m going with that as the earliest for shops and public transport btw.

Wowzel · 02/12/2020 21:37

I've noticed my snot is a lot less black now I wear a mask on the tube. Might carry on wearing one on the tube for that reason in the future

Snog · 02/12/2020 21:38

I am going to hold a huge mask burning party and hug fest.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 02/12/2020 21:39

I hope they stay as a courtesy thing too to be honest. For when you're ill. I think people/organisations are going to be more accepting of working from home when someone is ill too.

Since the first 2 weeks of term when we were all ill in school, there has been very little in the way of colds/snot/coughing. This time last year was shocking - properly awful to work in. We've got covid cases, but nowt else. Not having kids coughing the whole time is nice.

IrmaFayLear · 02/12/2020 21:39

I would like mask-wearing to continue on public transport and definitely whilst visiting the doctor’s surgery/hospital.

MrsWooster · 02/12/2020 21:40

I’d like to see a cultural normalisation of mask wearing in confined spaces if you have a cold or anything else. Imagine how lovely to be in a public-facing role and not showered with germs day in day out.

veeeeh · 02/12/2020 21:42

There is far too much individualism now. I feel safer going to a supermarket/any shop/public transport wearing a mask where others are too.

The vaccines have not YET been proven to provide immunity, no one knows yet if they need to be given every year, or how long the protection lasts.

I don't want anyone apart from those I live with and love hugging and kissing me etc.

Times and attitudes will change, and have changed. Lots of people are twitchy and wary. That's OK surely.

Milkshake7489 · 02/12/2020 21:43

I think I'll continue to wear a mask when I've got cold symptoms (but not on a day to day basis).

It seems bizarre that we used to walk around just breathing germs over everyone before Covid Grin

I’m always baffled by people who speak of this. It’s an urban myth, no? I’m a Londoner btw,

No,we used to walk around breathing freely.
Inkpaperstars · 02/12/2020 21:45

Black snot on the tube is not a myth, sadly!

dizzydizzydizzy · 02/12/2020 21:46

@FelicityBob

Don’t see how they can make us once the vaccine is implemented and there is no longer a big risk of virus transmission?
It’s quite clear many people are going to refuse the virus. Without herd immunity, we may need to continue wearing masks.
Tistheseason17 · 02/12/2020 21:46

Bearing in mind the vaccine does not prevent Covid 19 - only reduces symptoms - I think masks will be here until at least this time next year.

dizzydizzydizzy · 02/12/2020 21:47

Vaccine not virus Blush

NothingIsWrong · 02/12/2020 21:53

As soon as they are not a legal requirement, mine will be gone. Hate them.

Quartz2208 · 02/12/2020 21:55

I think this thread proves JVT is right that for some they are here to stay and we have seen a shift towards a more Asian approach with masks

BlueStarRose · 02/12/2020 21:58

I was thinking about what JVT said. I think I would continue to wear one on public transport (commuting into London). Have got into the habit of hand sanitising as soon as I get off public transport and think that will continue.

Won’t be wearing one in shops/restaurants though when I don’t have to.

Wowzel · 02/12/2020 21:59

@AcornAutumn - definitely not a myth, doesn't happen all the time but is sometimes really gross.

TheSpottedZebra · 02/12/2020 22:00

Black snot is real! It certainly is on Piccadilly and Northern Lines.

RaspberryCoulis · 02/12/2020 22:01

Jet is welcome to wear a mask as long as he wishes.

I'm planning a bonfire the very SECOND wearing the bastarding things isn't a legal obligation any more.

AcornAutumn · 02/12/2020 22:05

But I’m a Londoner born and bred. Maybe we have a special gene that spares us?
ancientgran · 02/12/2020 22:05

I didn't see the briefing today but I was thinking about this earlier. I haven't had a cold yet, normally I would have had at least once by now and frequently end up with a chest infection, I've broken ribs before now as I do tend to get horrible chest infections. So I was thinking maybe wearing a mask in winter is a good idea. I suppose I'm luck though as wearing a mask doesn't really bother me, much better than a cold.
