Masks are here to stay aren’t they?

JVT seemed to make that very clear tonight.

I’m gutted if this is true. I only have hearing in 1 ear and rely on lip reading more than I realised. I find masks awful and avoid going anywhere where I have to wear one .

Mine have made a massive positive impact on my mental health so I will be wearing them as long as i can get away with it for.

Hugosmugo · 02/12/2020 20:46

I think masks will end at Easter if enough people are vaccinated. I heard him too but then he corrected himself. People may choose to especially out if habit, but people are like sheep and as soon as it isn't needed, people will follow others. They will be a thing of the past.

Aragog · 02/12/2020 20:46

@kittensarecute

I don't mind masks but I hope social distancing is ditched at the earliest opportunity!
I quite like having the personal space when it comes to strangers. I have discovered that 2m isn't really that much and I actually quite like people not being that close to me.

I've never been a big fan of hugs and kisses beyond my immediate family either, so the suits me too.

gannett · 02/12/2020 20:47

Most people I know will be happy to wear masks voluntarily if they have a cold etc in the future. Covid really made it clear how poor many people's standards of hygiene were and the improvement in that is one of the silver linings of this year. I include wearing masks to protect others from your germs in that.

I also find they help when walking along a road with busy traffic and disgusting fumes - and in the winter it's very nice to have a slightly warmer nose. I recommend hanging your mask on a warm radiator before you go out, it's lovely and toasty when you put it on.

IRL I don't know a single person who feels wearing a mask is any more of an imposition than wearing a hat or a scarf.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/12/2020 20:48

@theThreeofWeevils

It would be a very good thing if people continue wearing them on public transport, in shops and in the workplace etc if they feel they might have a cold, sore throat or whatever coming on.
Yes, I hope this stays so less spread of germs.

I’d like to keep SD with strangers and in workplaces.

Aragog · 02/12/2020 20:48

@RedMarauder

He meant that when people had a cold like in some Asian countries they would wear a mask indoors to protect others.

In my case I would fight to work at home as I always have colds.

That would make sense tbh. Well both options:
  • work from home if you feel under the weather, but well enough to work otherwise (where possible)
  • or, if wfh not an option and you need to go our, wear a mask to prevent/reduce spraying bugs onto everyone.
AllAussieAdventures · 02/12/2020 20:51

I really don't want handshakes back.

They have always grossed me out.

AgnesNaismith · 02/12/2020 20:51

I would like it if people wore masks when they had colds/general bugs....I will if you will!

tappitytaptap · 02/12/2020 20:53

People who want to keep social distancing - do you really think your workplace is going to pay for a bigger office so you can all spread out 😂

pinkdragons · 02/12/2020 20:54

Don't mind wearing a mask in supermarkets etc.

I hope hugging and kissing on the cheek is a thing of the past. Unless it's someone you actually really want to hug and visa versa. My FIL kisses me on both cheeks on arrival and departure, every time I see him (weekly). I really hate it and it's been a relief not to have to politely accept it recently.

PicsInRed · 02/12/2020 20:55

I won't wear one for a millisecond longer than legally necessary.

SomewhereEast · 02/12/2020 20:56

He corrected himself pretty quickly & Boris was obviously Less Than Thrilled with the idea...so nope.

Bathroom12345 · 02/12/2020 20:57

I hate them but like the idea of me wearing one when I have a cold.

Stellaris22 · 02/12/2020 20:58

I have cough variant asthma and it's triggered by every cold, I get weeks of a painful hacking cough as a result.

I will keep wearing mine even when not mandatory, as will DH to protect me. I'm not vulnerable but it's been so great only getting the hacking, no sleep for weeks cough, only once this year. As opposed to 4-5 times a year.

meditrina · 02/12/2020 20:59

I think that it will tip towards Asia, and whenever you have to go out and have a snotty grotty sneezy cold, or feel,as if you are about to,come down with one then you will put on a mask. Because who would not spare their fellow creatures an illness?

I think handwashing habits will maintain at least some of their improvements too

BananaPop2020 · 02/12/2020 20:59

I cannot wait for masks to be ditched forever, I absolutely hate them! I miss handshakes as well.

nosswith · 02/12/2020 20:59

If it stays for some situations such as travelling on a bus or train, so much the better.

I hope hand sanitiser stays. Sad that people need to be advised about hygiene, but some do.

FelicityBob · 02/12/2020 21:00

I’ve just read the Q&A by Public Health Wales that says we will still be expected to follow the regulations (mask wearing, social distancing) after having the vaccine

Spidey66 · 02/12/2020 21:01

What's JVT.?

Growapair · 02/12/2020 21:01

Of course they’re not Hmm

MissEllaWater · 02/12/2020 21:01

As someone who's exempt, I can't wait for them to be a thing of the past so I don't get abuse almost every time I go out (twice just today, within half an hour). And no, I don't think they're here to stay, thank goodness.

JimmyTheBrave · 02/12/2020 21:03

Me and DH forget to take our bloody masks somewhere at least once a week, as soon as they're not mandatory we won't be bothering.

MargosKaftan · 02/12/2020 21:04

Thing is, if we have vaccinated the NHS staff before Christmas and most of the vunerable by the end of February (which is the time frame being discussed), the death rate from covid will plumet.

Where is the justification for any restrictions when covid is no longer something that kills people or makes people sick enough to need hospital treatment?

Masks are unpopular and an easy win for the government to get rid.

AgeLikeWine · 02/12/2020 21:06

I will certainly be changing aspects of my behaviour permanently after the pandemic. I haven’t had a stomach upset, cold or even a sniffle since March so I must have been doing something right. Wearing masks might be OTT, but I will definitely continue to use hand sanitiser whenever I touch something which lots of other people also touch, eg door handles, handrails on tube trains etc etc.

Stellaris22 · 02/12/2020 21:07

I like the idea of personal responsibility and wearing one when you have a cold. So not all the time, just when you know you are ill.
