Masks are here to stay aren’t they?

JVT seemed to make that very clear tonight.

I’m gutted if this is true. I only have hearing in 1 ear and rely on lip reading more than I realised. I find masks awful and avoid going anywhere where I have to wear one .

OP posts:

@Spidey66

What's JVT.?
I've just googled it. I'd never heard of him. I do wish people wouldn't use acronyms that they expect everyone to know. Sorry, OP, it's a bugbear of mine.

But to get back to the question, I hope not, I hate them.

WanderingMilly · 02/12/2020 21:10

I quite like the masks.....I know many don't. But I think I shall be using mine for some time, as well as gloves and social distancing. I never did like strangers coming up close, nor hand-shaking, and often wrapped my scarf around my nose in an attempt toe avoid the worst of other people's sneezes on the train, for example.
Now I have an excuse.....!

RaisinsRuinEverything · 02/12/2020 21:10

I think the legislation is in place for 6 months from 24th July so we might be able to ditch them on 24th January... here’s hoping... Anyone know if that’s true?

Meruem · 02/12/2020 21:11

I don’t think it’s a bad thing if we end up like Asia. I spend a lot of time in Japan so am more than used to numerous people wearing masks. And let’s face it, when it came down to it their covid numbers were nowhere near as bad as ours. I think it was a combination of masks and their extreme cleanliness everywhere. I live in London and the tube and stations are filthy in normal times. Absolutely disgusting. In Japan all the seats are spotless, cleaners regularly wipe down handrails etc. Along with mask wearing I’d like to see better cleaning practices adopted also. But then extra cleaners cost money so that will likely be dropped ASAP. If enough other people do it, I would probably continue with the mask. It may offer little in protection for the wearer but it does make me feel a bit safer.

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

Burning mine as soon as vaccinated, fuck em! I hate them I hate them I hate them!!!!!
Same!! Into the incinerator they will go!! 🔥🔥
Hairbrush123 · 02/12/2020 21:12

In my experience of the Far East, people only wore masks because of poor air quality/air pollution otherwise I don’t think they’d wear it (basing it on Hong Kong/Taiwan/China)

tortoiseshell1985 · 02/12/2020 21:13

@FelicityBob

I’ve just read the Q&A by Public Health Wales that says we will still be expected to follow the regulations (mask wearing, social distancing) after having the vaccine
And there it is Don't expect your rights and freedoms from restrictions back Unbelievable
JellyStrudel · 02/12/2020 21:14

One of the benefits has been not getting a cold from people sneezing all over you, along with coffee shops having to be MUCH cleaner. I hope both of these things stay

laudemio · 02/12/2020 21:15

He just said they may become a habit like in the far East.

Worriedandabitscared · 02/12/2020 21:15

In Japan, people wear masks when they are sick to protect others. It's not that weird tbf

VenusTiger · 02/12/2020 21:16

@FelicityBob it has been stated (also by Dr Parrish) that any vaccine will NOT stop the spread, it will simply lessen the symptoms. It's a SARs virus and like the flu vaccine, that alters every year, it is only up to 60% effective. The problem is, the virus mutates (already has done, 1000s of strains were recognised in the summer).

Because you won't be protected by the vaccine immediately.

@tootyfruitypickle

No they’re not, he meant that they may become part of our culture like in parts of Asia, but that’s not everyone, all the time, and is not mandatory.

I love him but I think he’s wrong on this actually, being forced to wear masks is different to a culture where people have individually chosen to wear them.

They are only part of the culture in Asia (Japan and Korea) when you have a cold- not to pass it on

prior to cv19 they were not part of the general culture

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 02/12/2020 21:21

I think masks are far preferable to inconsiderate people coughing, sneezing and grotching their germs all over me. I hope they do stay even if just for when people have a cold or virus

daisyjgrey · 02/12/2020 21:23

I think there are places and situations they probably should be worn, going forward. If you're ill maybe wearing one in the supermarket etc is a good idea, courteous even. Public transport I think they should probably be worn, especially places like the tube and busy bus routes.

opinionminion · 02/12/2020 21:27

I think once the Department of Health look at seasonal flu figures (death/ Hospital admissions due to flu) and see them plummeting .... masks will be here for 6 months of the year ...

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/12/2020 21:30

I hate them, and while I can see the rationale to wear them going forward if you have a cold, I can’t see how it would really work. My nose runs constantly in cold weather, and today (currently three degrees) I was sniffing my way round the shops under my mask, not able to blow it. SO annoying! Plus not being able to blow my nose causes post-nasal drip, which makes me cough.

AcornAutumn · 02/12/2020 21:31

@DappledThings

Nah. They will stop being mandatory by early Spring once loads of people are vaccinated. Some people might choose to keep wearing them if they have a cold. Most won't.
I think the most optimistic view is they’ll stop being mandated in June, a year after they were.

Oh, just take it off and blow your nose! Don’t give yourself post nasal drip, that’s awful!
Whatnext2018 · 02/12/2020 21:32

I can’t wait to get rid of mine, I hate not seeing expressions and I hate children not seeing faces (my Dd not seeing mine) it’s not normal. There should be no need for them once we’re vaccinated..

FindHungrySamurai · 02/12/2020 21:32

I think there will be a place for them on crowded public transport but I’m slightly hearing impaired at the moment so I hate them in circumstances where I need to communicate.

Inkpaperstars · 02/12/2020 21:33

I don't think they are, barring further unexpected developments. Although I don't think it will go back to being like before where you would be regarded as very odd for wearing a mask...if a few people want to continue that will be less strange looking iyswim. Might be a good idea if people have colds etc or re traffic pollution.

Phyzzy · 02/12/2020 21:33

I do think there may be an end to the practice of going to work with a cold and infecting all your colleagues. Either mask wearing when infectious will become the etiquette or it will be expected that you stay off sick.

I don't mind the mask, even though I have a lung condition that makes it difficult. But I am old and ugly and I'm pretty sure younger me would have hated them out of vanity.

AcornAutumn · 02/12/2020 21:34

I’d rather people stayed home whenever possible, if ill. I hope there won’t be a return to ill people in the office when they get sick pay or allowed to work from home. There’s always one who turns up in the office “because I had to”. No you didn’t!
DappledThings · 02/12/2020 21:34

@AcornAutumn I'll take that bet! I'm sticking with early Spring being a big reduction in where they are mandated. Possibly a roll back to just public transport as they first came in as.
