News just breaking on BBC

OP posts:
WhyNotMeThough · 02/12/2020 08:20

@AuntieStella

I wonder how many of these really won't take it when offered

Time will tell, but I expect that there will be so many people readily consenting that uptake could be high enough for significant easing of restrictions by about April (I thought Hancock was hinting at that as the timeline when he spoke to BBC earlier thus morning)

I hope so. I'll be there , in the queue for whatever one I'm allowed, I've got Covid now, and good luck to everyone assuming they are "low risk". I am too but covid hasn't paid me the courtesy of a mild dose. I'm genuinely concerned about my head, I can't think straight. It's frightening. I'm so happy though, that we have a bright light at the end of this tunnel 🤞
hopeishere · 02/12/2020 08:21

All NHS staff do not deserve it first. A small number have worked directly with covid.

Also is it likely that the rest of the population will get a less effective version?

Also I think lots of people will follow the "rules" even less now as they think "sure there's a vaccine".

HappydaysArehere · 02/12/2020 08:21

Can’t wait for it. Will be first in the queue if I am allowed. I am 79 and for the first time unbelievably wish I was 80!!!

toomuchtooold · 02/12/2020 08:21

@Ylvamoon all that article says is that they don't know yet to what extent the vaccination will prevent transmission - that's not to say it won't hinder or prevent transmission of the virus, but the company didn't wait to get enough data to prove that, they've gone straight for emergency approval as soon as they could show that it was a) safe and b) effective in preventing the illness. Now that they have proven those two things, it would be unethical not to release it for sale.

GlacindaTheTroll · 02/12/2020 08:21

He said if he was young and healthy there’s no way he’d get it

Of course - his age means he would be in priority 4 (alongside the CEV), whereas young (u50) and healthy do not feature in the priorisation and I think there in indeed no way he's get it until all those on the first priority list have been done

purplefig · 02/12/2020 08:21

@RaspberryCoulis

*Brilliant news.

When can we start burning the bastarding face coverings?*

Not even when you’ve had the vaccine apparently

Zippy1510 · 02/12/2020 08:22

Fantastic news! I’m sick of all the criticism the vaccines have been getting. It’s not skipped any of the safety steps as any other trial it’s just everyone has been working flat out on this trial (spoken as a scientist within the field). Everything else has been shelved to make room for this. There has been no waiting around and getting in the queue. You would end up full of viral mRNA if you catch covid too!!!

PrivateD00r · 02/12/2020 08:22

I hope so. It's sad NHS professionals on here saying they won't have it

As a midwife, an important element of my job is to empower women to retain bodily autonomy and to facilitate them to make informed decisions on their care.

What is sad is people thinking we lose that right by simply working for the NHS Confused

We are humans, we are not guinea pigs like many MN'ers have suggested recently 'I will sit back and see how NHS staff fare with the vaccine before deciding to get it'.

Cards on the table, I will accept the vaccine when I feel I am fully recovered from covid. However I will not be pressuring others to.

Lurchermom · 02/12/2020 08:22

I reckon I will weep tears of joy when that needle finally gets stuck in my arm! @MadameBlobby

Me too. I'm not even concerned about the virus on a personal level (not a high risk group, think I might have had it back in February) but the thought that we can start going back to normal and seeing family again, especially my vulnerable MIL makes me want to weep with joy. To be able to travel again! I know it's going to be a long roll out and no doubt with a few hiccups but for the first time in months I feel a hope burning inside me.

Smileyoriley · 02/12/2020 08:22

Glacinda - what he meant was that if he was young and healthy there’s no way he’d get it because he wouldn’t trust it, he wouldn’t risk it and would rather take his chance with the virus.

Not that he wouldn’t take it because he wouldn’t be on the priority list.

Pomegranatespompom · 02/12/2020 08:23

@hopeishere nhs staff will get it soon due to logistics of administration plus not wanting staff to go off sick/ close services.

ChloeCrocodile · 02/12/2020 08:25

This is awesome news. I'm young (by covid standards) and so won't be offered it anytime soon, but I'd be happy to swap places on the waiting list with anyone who is offered but declines! This feels like the beginning of the end of the restrictions.

I cannot wait to be allowed to have a proper family party. We have one every summer (with about 100 people) and I really missed it this year.

TwentyViginti · 02/12/2020 08:25

I'm no 5 in the queue being in the 65+ demographic and I will definitely be having it. Not fussed which one!

TimeQuest01 · 02/12/2020 08:26

I’m nearly crying, I’m so happy

I know many people have fears but I honestly think this is the only way out of this nightmare.

TwentyViginti · 02/12/2020 08:27

I don't think the vaccine roll out means we can set fire to our masks quite yet.

Extraslice · 02/12/2020 08:33

@Pomegranatespompom unfortunately not. I work for a community nursing team and was surprised how many staff said they wouldn’t be having it

goldenharvest · 02/12/2020 08:34

Can’t wait to be injected with my microchip and be controlled into buying everything from Amazon by Steve Bejesus 😂😂😂😂

CherryPavlova · 02/12/2020 08:34

Brilliant that is approved.
Pity we haven’t got any.

Skipsurvey · 02/12/2020 08:34

Yeah!! Bloody BMJ with their tinfoil hats.

That article has nothing in it about the safety of the vaccine?

It's about government communications in public health and science engagement

iVampire · 02/12/2020 08:38

no, I won’t be taking a vaccine I’m unsure if to protect other people

As things stand, it has not been established if it will protect other people. The benefit is entirely to the individual

Forgetmenot157 · 02/12/2020 08:38

@wildbarnet

Fab news shame there are so many people that won't take it and don't realise that although it takes years usually (due to funding etc) and there has never been such massive funding /scientists working night and day etc
I really don't think it is that many people that done want to have it. Certainly not enough that restrictions can't be lifted by spring... You always think its more when they spout it on social media but in reality it's the ones that don't bother saying anything that will be happy to have it. :)
