News just breaking on BBC

tortoiseshell1985 · 02/12/2020 07:24

It hasn't been rushed ffs

purplefig · 02/12/2020 07:25

@MarshaBradyo or have a read of this from well known conspiracy theorists, the British medical journal:

Will covid-19 vaccines save lives? Current trials aren’t designed to tell us

www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m4037

MarshaBradyo · 02/12/2020 07:25
@MarshaBradyo I imagine because it has been rushed.

I'm quite relieved I'm bottom of the list.
Rent surely medics understand that the faster timescale hasn’t cut corners? Just been a feat of compression.

We’ll see on numbers. But I reckon demand will high and exceed speed of deployment.

tortoiseshell1985 · 02/12/2020 07:25

Ok don't have it let's just go on living this miserable shitty life....

MarshaBradyo · 02/12/2020 07:26

Remmy not rent. Anyway feeling very positive this morning. Much better than gloom and doom of before.

purplefig · 02/12/2020 07:28

Have you seen what the trials have been designed to achieve?

I’m not an “anti vaxxer”, I’ve had them all, but there is not a chance I’d have this one anytime soon.

AgnesNaismith · 02/12/2020 07:29

NHS staff deserve it first!!

Alongside vulnerable groups it’d be great if those who have put themselves at risk were offered. I think it is France where teachers and shop workers are prioritised.

I also don’t want to be a dick...but....if nhs staff are vaccinated and care staff are vaccinated would it not be better to also vaccinate families of those in care homes? That would make the vulnerable less likely to get it and keep the economy going? Hmm or is it because we don’t know if it prevents infection...so it could still be passed on.

GlacindaTheTroll · 02/12/2020 07:29

Members of the board of MHRA are listed here

www.gov.uk/government/organisations/medicines-and-healthcare-products-regulatory-agency/about/our-governance

@purplefig - you have by insinuation accused one or more of these people of conflict of interests or perhaps even corruption. Would you clarify who you mean and what unprofessional conduct you are accusing them of?

tortoiseshell1985 · 02/12/2020 07:30

You know just a bit of hope of an exit from a miserable existence but hey let's crap all over it ....

Yep typical. If people want to keep living like this go for it alone. This is a way out. Tg
Tootsietoot · 02/12/2020 07:31

Once people start understanding how it was so rushed (no years of begging for funding, every bit of red tape smoothed over, access to labs instantly offered, top of the list for ethics boards, (not waiting for the next quarterly meeting) volunteer recruitment organised in days not months etc. And see others taking it (apart from the odd one that has a reaction) they will be more assured. In almost all vaccines any issues advise very quickly and adverse effects rarely develop months later so by most fears by reasonable people will be alleviated.

YouAreAmazing0 · 02/12/2020 07:31

I am so happy I feel like crying. Brilliant news to wake up to

AuntieStella · 02/12/2020 07:33

would it not be better to also vaccinate families of those in care homes?

Table 3 of the MHRA document (linked near the start of the thread) specifies that cohabiting family members of the severely immunocompromised can be vaccinated alongside the CV community (category 6). That doesn't sound as if non-cohabitants will be covered.

SingANewSongChickenTikka · 02/12/2020 07:33

Not rushed, that implies corners were cut.

The process (the whole process) has happened a lot faster which shows what happens with unlimited funding, universal will for success, massive amounts of resources thrown at the project etc.

AuntieStella · 02/12/2020 07:34

Matt Hancock on BBC now

OP posts:
LightasaBreeze · 02/12/2020 07:34

Most people won't get this one anyway, there is only enough for 20m people, if our one is approved most will get that I guess, sometime in the first half of next year.

AuntieStella · 02/12/2020 07:35

He said 800,000 doses arriving next week, bulk of rollout in New Year

TheRubyRedshoes · 02/12/2020 07:35

Hooray!!!
1st Western country to issue the vaccine?

Wow! Amazing news and as time goes on they will keep working on it and make it better and get better across the board dealing with covid.

Hooray.

purplefig · 02/12/2020 07:36

Ok I dont want to “crap” on anyone’s happiness, so I’ll leave you be. Just wanted to share a few points to show that a) no, not all nhs staff will be having this and b) there are genuine concerns if you do some reading around. I throughly recommend the BMJ as a highly reputable starting place.

lovelemoncurd · 02/12/2020 07:36

I've been called up to help administer it which will start next week 8-8pm 7 days a week and I will have no qualms about receiving it.

AuntieStella · 02/12/2020 07:38

MHRA will be publishing their full version later this morning, and JCVI will also be issuing their confirmation

OP posts:
satnighttakeaway · 02/12/2020 07:38

@purplefig

How come?

Look into who is on the board at MHRA and what competing interests they might have.

Are you suggesting that some highly qualified professionals have an interest in the results of mass vaccination by an unsafe product?

What interest would that be?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/12/2020 07:39

I’m so happy. This is a groundbreaking vaccine. It’s so clever.

No it isn’t been rushed, it’s had all the money and time it needed to get through the stages without having to stop for funding or to find people to help research it.

A family member is involved in the vaccines and in no way it is rushed. No one has had annual leave and they have been working night and day to get this achieved. It’s bloody fantastic.

TheKeatingFive · 02/12/2020 07:40

I imagine there’ll be a reasonable amount of peer pressure in the nhs for workers to get it.

Frequentflier · 02/12/2020 07:40

Regardless of all the concerns- and these are being thoroughly discussed on other threads- this is an amazing day for science and all those who have worked overtime to make this happen.
