It's best for children to be in school

I'm shocked that the consensus here appears to be that schools should close. I believe that it's best for children to be in school. Also that they should not be forced to wear masks or perform any social distancing as this is a damaging for their mental and social development. A thread for parents and teachers who share this view and have concerns about the threat of school closures and forced isolation of children who are not ill.

May I point you in the direction of the FB group, UsForThem?

CallmeAngelina · 30/11/2020 18:13

And the "consensus" here is certainly not that schools should close.

SionnachRua · 30/11/2020 18:15

Well, this will end well won't it?

Do you think close contacts of people testing for Covid-19 should not be asked to self-isolate?
motherrunner · 30/11/2020 18:16

There isn’t a ‘threat’ of school closures, there ARE school closures. I’m in the West Mids and we have once again had to close to all years as we haven’t enough staff to open.

Just because you want schools to stay open doesn’t mean it’ll happen.

Pull the other one.

noblegiraffe · 30/11/2020 18:16

What is your opinion of vaccines?

sherrystrull · 30/11/2020 18:17

The consensus isn't that schools should close.

megletthesecond · 30/11/2020 18:18

I'm sure my kids can cope in masks and social distancing.

After putting up with me for months they'd be better off out of school and seeing a couple of members of family. We're all sick to death of each other.

CabinClose · 30/11/2020 18:19

Of course it’s best for children to be in school, no one thinks otherwise. It’s just that that has to be balanced with the impact on the wider community. Are you one of those people who think their giant pram should take priority over a wheelchair on the bus? Because you sound like you are.

CallmeAngelina · 30/11/2020 18:20

"I believe that it's best for children to be in school."

Do you think that there are many people who don't believe this? I mean, in an ideal world, when we're not battling a pandemic?

StarryFire · 30/11/2020 18:21

Absolutely- the damage to DC and society of schools closing is far worse than any impact on COVID from them being open.

That is why they must and will be renaming open. There are a number of posters on here who claim not so want schools closures yet start almost daily threads advocating it.

And as I posted up thread my school is closed due to staffing levels. This is the second whole school closure since half term.
Blacktothepink · 30/11/2020 18:26

All my nieces and nephews are at home due to class and year closures 🤷‍♀️

I think it's best for children to be in school now.

Measures should have been put in place in schools. T&T is a disgrace. We should be outraged with the current government who have been woeful.
We plan to start vaccinating in my nhs trust in 2 weeks time - brighter times ahead.

Italiandreams · 30/11/2020 18:28

What do you think should happen when schools don’t have enough staff to open?

Juststopswimming · 30/11/2020 18:32

OP I don't think there is a consensus at all. There is significant echo chamber led by one very vocal MN'er and I think a lot of us who have tried to give an alternative point of view have now given up arguing over it, because, well frankly schools are still open and infections are declining, so that's sort of arguing the case for us!

I'm yet to meet a teacher in real life who wants schools to shut, thank god!

jessstan1 · 30/11/2020 18:32

Here is UsForThem if anyone can't find it. I haven't looked at it so am not recommending.

usforthem.co.uk/

Children are going to school in many places but some schools are closed which makes life hard for working parents. Others are regularly sending children home because there has been a Covid case. Those that are open are cold! It's a tough time.

I don't think it hurts kids not to go to school for a while (some would love that!), but do remember this situation will not be with us forever. We just have to do what we can at the moment.

SomnolentSekhmet · 30/11/2020 18:33

Obviously unless the teachers are sick enough to need hospital they should be in class, teaching! Selfish bastards..

lurch3r · 30/11/2020 18:33

Of course it's best for children to be in school. But schools can't remain open when there are too many staff either with positive tests or isolating because a family or bubble member has had a positive test. Possibly not helped by children and adults not able to wear masks or social distance (at least in primaries)? You can shout about schools remaining open as much as you like, but when the staff and children are at home isolating, they are clearly not going to be fully open. That's not an opinion, but a fact. Sorry.

ScubaSteven · 30/11/2020 18:33

Couple of questions OP - do you work in a school or in the medical profession? What age children are you talking about or do you mean all ages? Do you have children who are currently school age? With no masks or social distancing how do you propose protecting children and adults in a school setting?

The general consensus is to keep schools open, what has given you the impression it isn't?

motherrunner · 30/11/2020 18:35

Depending on where you live, schools aren’t open. I want to teach face to face but we just haven’t the staff to open. This isn’t an exceptional case where I am (West Mids).
Augustbreeze · 30/11/2020 18:36

Why don't you think children should isolate and thus prevent spread of a potentially deadly virus OP?
