What does a covid cough feel like?

Sorry if there have already been threads like this.

I get tested at work every week for covid and my test that was administered on Wednesday came back negative.

I developed a tickly, dry cough yesterday evening. It happened at first when I was eating so thought it was because some food had gone down the wrong way but it's still happening now. I am probably coughing about twice an hour so does not fit the 'coughing a lot for more than a hour' criteria when you look up the guidelines. I don't know about the 'three episodes in 24 hours' as I'm not really sure what constitutes an episode.

My throat feels a little dry and tickly. My nose is a bit snotty. I feel absolutely fine in myself otherwise.

If anyone has had covid with a cough did it feel like this? Or if not how did it feel? I haven't been out anywhere today but don't whether to start isolating officially and getting another test.

Watching with interest....

FireUnderpants · 28/11/2020 20:51

It was a dry, unproductive cough. No snot and nothing coming up from my chest. A bit wheezy and a big coughing fit left me out of breath.

Presume you work in healthcare? Can you ask your work what they recommend? I'd probably just get another test to be on the safe side?

peanacat · 28/11/2020 20:59

You are coughing twice an hour, you clearly have a cough of some description. Nobody coughs twice every hour if they are just perfectly healthy. Therefore another test and isolation is needed, surely? It’s probably just a cold, but shouldn’t really risk it. Fyi when I had covid I had a dry cough that started off infrequent and got progressively worse and I ended up coughing lots for 6 weeks (and am still coughing occasionally now 9 months later)

tulippa · 28/11/2020 21:03

@FireUnderpants Thanks that's helpful to know. Were you coughing lots or just every now and then?

@covetingthepreciousthings No not healthcare - a prison. We have been very good at keeping it out of the establishment so far. Might get a test tomorrow to be on the safe side.

Started off coughing maybe once an hour, over the next week it gradually increased to the point that I coughed and coughed until I threw up, several times a day. It was a dry cough but made my chest and ribs hurt from early on.

I also had a sore throat and my temp gradually crept up from day 2 of symptoms.

QueenPaws · 28/11/2020 21:32

I got tested today. Incredibly sore throat and dry cough, throat feels scratchy and sore - not tonsillitis sharp type sore. No results yet
Also had sweating/felt faint

tulippa · 28/11/2020 21:34

Hmm...will deffo keep an eye on this cough if a covid cough starts slow and gets worse. Will sort a test tomorrow - thanks all.

I think considering your testing weekly through work, they won't begrudge you if you get a test tomorrow to be sure it's not covid. If they're trying to keep Covid out of the prison.

Fingers crossed it will be negative for you though OP.

magnarocks · 28/11/2020 22:23

Tested positive just over a week ago. It's a fairly non descript sort of cough in my experience. Just a bit irritating and intermittently continuous (it comes and goes, with a few hacks at a time every few hours).

Summerhope1 · 28/11/2020 23:05

Do you cough during the night?
DS has got a really bad dry cough during the day, once he is sleep he seems fine. He has coughed for more than a week now, and is not getting better. He had done a test and come back as negative, but I am wondering if we should get another test now.

ScottishStottie · 28/11/2020 23:08

I had a cough as a symptom for my covid but very mild.

Never had a coughing 'episode' but was coughing a few times every 20 mins or so. Came on quickly. Wasnt 100% sure it was the right sort of cough and felt a bit silly getting a test but it came back positive.

If i were you i would get a test.

My main symptoms were a sore head and tiredness.

SuperAlly · 28/11/2020 23:12

Does the COVID cough come from your chest or your throat, if that makes sense?

No, I didn't really, it was worst in the evening though - like 7pm onwards

IHeartKingThistle · 28/11/2020 23:15

Mine was phlegmy. It's supposed to be dry but mine was phlegmy! Started off tickly and was never my worst symptom and never bothered me at night.

magnarocks · 28/11/2020 23:16

It's just a cough, mine is worse in the night. OH's seems more prominent in the day... Ours don't have any features that would make you think 'oh, this is a different kind of cough!' Having said that, I got tested because I totally lost my sense of taste and smell and OH had been exposed to me for a few days and then got a cough/felt worn out.

IHeartKingThistle · 28/11/2020 23:16

Should say, had a positive test so was definitely Covid!

magnarocks · 28/11/2020 23:17

I would say, a new cough that makes you think 'oh I've got a cough' is enough of a thought process to make you think that you need to arrange a test.

OpheliasCrayon · 29/11/2020 09:25

I didn't cough at all during the day and coughed for about an hour or two solid in the middle of the night for about three weeks.

tulippa · 29/11/2020 09:37

@SuperAlly Definitely from the throat as it's the tickling there that causes but I can feel it in the chest too as I cough.

I don't know why I thought that there would be anything specific or different about a covid cough. Didn't cough at all last night. Still have the same dry feeling in my throat (not sore) and an coughing with the same frequency as yesterday now I have got up. Snotty nose has stopped. Still no other symptoms.

Have test booked for this afternoon.

@tulippa I thought there would be a distinctive sign that would let me know it was a 'COVID cough' too - you're not alone. Hope you get your results quick.

tulippa · 30/11/2020 21:10

Just to update: my tickly cough is not covid. Got a negative result today. Smile

Also got some dirty looks in the supermarket while coughing into my mask. Blush
