Vaccination order changed?

bathsh3ba · 27/11/2020 19:37

Just read that due to the 'instability' of the Pfizer vaccine, it can only be given in hospitals so they will vax NHS staff first and the 80+ and care homes will have to wait for Oxford vax to be approved. Aside from the fact that this is another broken promise and the Oxford vax is possibly less effective, is anyone else suspicious this will just cause another surge in Jan and justify lockdown 3.0 for several months while they supposedly vaccinate the vulnerable?

@Artus

Apologies if this has already been discussed but I see an assumption that all NHS staff will agree to have the vaccination.

Certainly when I worked for them there was a very significant percentage who refused the flu jab. I cant see that changing for this one. So there will be a large number of staff still vulnerable.

Maybe they will have to change to no patient contact jobs if they refuse to be vaccinated? Or put on the covid wards?

Children are not going to be vaccinated so vaccinating all education staff is not going to solve the isolation problem unfortunately. There will be priorities introduced after all the most vulnerable are vaccinated and hopefully school staff will be top there. It’s some way off though

BungleandGeorge · 28/11/2020 12:33

You can’t discriminate against those who choose not to be vaccinated in this country. Your human rights are the same whatever job you do

lunar1 · 28/11/2020 12:35

How dare the government react and adapt to an ever changing national emergency.

mumsneedwine · 28/11/2020 12:37

Again people spectacularly miss the point. Schools are closing because there are no longer enough healthy staff to open them. Kids isolating is a different thing. We can teach kids at home if they are off. What we can't do as humans is teach at all if we are sick. We have 3 on ventilators at the moment - one parent complained her child wasn't being taught remotely by her teacher. My email back was as polite as I could be.
Oh and I am clinically vulnerable and a teacher. Still not getting a vaccine. Because 'schools are COVID safe'. Bollocks they are.

I presume that once all over 18s are vaccinated then children will no longer need to isolate. Their isolation at the moment is to reduce the spread among adults who may become very ill rather than to protect the children themselves.
mumsneedwine · 28/11/2020 12:45

@Phyzzy I know a 16 year old who now needs a lung transplant from COVID. Rare. But not much consolation to her.

BungleandGeorge · 28/11/2020 12:49

If you are a vulnerable teacher you will get a vaccine with your vulnerability group. After the people who are more vulnerable and before those less vulnerable

mumsneedwine · 28/11/2020 13:03

@BungleandGeorge unfortunately I won't get earlier as having a heart condition doesn't appear in the list. So I have to wait and hope I don't get sick. Despite spending ever day with 2,000+ people mostly not wearing masks or social distancing.
In Hull lots of medical staff having to take time off to look after their children as the schools are closed. Because teachers are sick. Some joined up thinking would work here.

KenDodd · 28/11/2020 13:31

Teachers should absolutely not be at the front of the queue unless they are clinically vulnerable.

I don't agree. I think teachers and all key workers should be very near the top of the list for vaccines, just after hospital and hcp.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot · 28/11/2020 13:31

The priority list has been updated and care home residents and staff remain at the top

Pomegranatespompom · 28/11/2020 13:58

@mumsneedwine you have 3 teachers in your school on ventilators ???

mumsneedwine · 28/11/2020 14:19

@Pomegranatespompom yes.

Pomegranatespompom · 28/11/2020 14:38

That’s very sad. We’re they vulnerable?
We’re tending not to use ventilation as much now, sorry to hear they needed this, or is it oxygen support rather than intubation?

We need to see the ons data re occupation - I don’t think it’s very clear at the moment.

mumsneedwine · 28/11/2020 14:56

@Pomegranatespompom they are in ICU ? Not seen photos but been told they are ventilated ? So not too sure of actual medical stuff. 1 is over 60 and has health stuff but other 2 are in there 40s. Don't know their medical stuff (they wouldn't know mine). Just heard one is coming out of ICU today which is great news. We had a bit of an outbreak and been total chaos in school. I'm pretending it's not happening or else I'll cry.

Pomegranatespompom · 28/11/2020 15:07

Sorry to hear it’s been chaos, pleased to hear of the improvement.
Just awful for everyone 😢
Vaccine soon !

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/11/2020 15:09

Good grief!

It's an pretty unique kind of vaccine, developed quickly. What promise got broken?

Bloody stupid meeja crap again...

Chronic heart disease is on the vulnerable list. As is anyone who usually gets a free flu jab for health reasons. I suspect everyone whose records have certain conditions coded in their medical records will be called up. It might be worth contacting your GP and ensuring you’ve got the right coding on you records

Sertchgi123 · 28/11/2020 15:33

It seems perfectly sensible to me.

mumsneedwine · 28/11/2020 17:34

@BungleandGeorge as I only managed to get a flu vaccine this week I hope you see right.
