Gym classes

Noticed it says in Tier 2 that indoor exercise is only permitted with members of your own household

I take it that means no gym classes in 2 and 3 then? Does anyone know please.

I’m trying to work it out as I run a yoga studio. I know gyms are open and the wording for classes is ‘no mixing of households’. But what does that mean? I hold small classes of 3 now due to social distancing (or I was). But they all spend the whole class chatting to each other! And me.

I think I’ll stayed closed unfortunately. If I can’t see my friends inside it doesn’t seem right that I can have clients inside in the studio in my garden.

IrkedEssex · 26/11/2020 13:47

You'll need to check with the gym. My understanding is that you can do a gym class provided there is adequate distancing within the class.

edwinbear · 26/11/2020 13:51

I'm Tier 2, we've just been e mailed by our chain of gyms to say classes can be booked from 6pm for Dec 2nd onwards. I presume it will be the same set up where we are allocated a 'square' we have to stay within, spin bikes are socially distanced, no boxercise because of the physical contact. But otherwise, much as it was before they had to shut again - hope so anyway!

Orangeblossom7777 · 26/11/2020 13:55

I alos had an email from ours, Better, but it seems to have vanished.

There's an exemption clause for elite athletes.

EasterIssland · 26/11/2020 13:59

Tier 3 here. Sad that the studio I go for yoga won’t be able to open :(

Orangeblossom7777 · 26/11/2020 14:02

If they can't do classes would they open for just swimming and the gym I wonder

Classes can go ahead, as long as there is room for the 2m between people and you don't socialise before/after. I have a yoga class booked for next Thursday, cant wait. Just sad that I can't do any other classes for a week as I'm tapering ready for a race.

Not in tier 3 though.
PurpleDaisies · 26/11/2020 14:12

This is from the guidelines relating to tier 3...

organised indoor sport, physical activity and exercise classes cannot take place indoors. There are exceptions for indoor disability sport, sport for educational purposes and supervised sport and physical activity for under-18s

LordEmsworth · 26/11/2020 14:16

No indoor classes in Tier 3.

Indoor classes are allowed in Tier 2 and Tier 1. But no mixing/socialising/mingling/fraternising/interacting with others in the class who aren't in your hoseuhold/bubble (in Tier 1 you can mix but no more than 6 of you mixing, if there are more than 6 in the class). And staying 2m apart, sufficient ventilation, adequate cleaning etc as well.

The wording is really unhelpful but "mixing" seems to mean interacting, rather than just being in the same room.

HarrietOh · 26/11/2020 14:19

It's ridiculous. In Tier 3 we can't run safe, distanced, organised classes, but instead have to open as a 'normal' gym!

Itwillendintiers · 26/11/2020 14:53

Does anyone know what is happening with swimming lessons and swimming clubs?

Orangeblossom7777 · 26/11/2020 15:23

Haha don't think that will be applying to this 'household' sadly Smile

Does anyone else go to a Better leisure centre? As I had an email but it has now vanished, about booking classes. Sadly i wonder if they have realised they can't do them.

I'm really hoping the swimming pool might still open though.

Orangeblossom7777 · 26/11/2020 15:25

Sorry, confused there, it seems they can open in Tier 2, maybe they are just clarifying.

Scotland level 3 doesn't have gym classes but the gym and swimming pools are still open so sounds like it might be similar. The kids can still have swimming lessons although the instructors aren't allowed in the pool with them, but adults can't and there's no aquafit class. It makes no sense at all!

Orangeblossom7777 · 26/11/2020 16:06

Yeah we didn't have aqua aerobics either before this lockdown, too splashy or something- not sure. I miss it.

I'm a Pilates teacher in a Tier 2 area and I really don't understand whether socially distanced classes are allowed indoors or not.

If you're a member at one of the big chains then please share what they're doing about group classes so that I can follow along with them!

ListeningQuietly · 26/11/2020 17:15

I think they are allowed in tier 2. But there needs to be no interaction between households and 2m spaces. My classes are a chatty lot. They spend the whole class chatting and giggling which is great in normal times. They all know each other, they’re all friends. So I think that comes under households mixing. I don’t really fancy barking at people not to chat. My studio is also in my garden so I don’t feel comfortable having a stream of people coming in to my garden.

Big gym chains should be fine. Big spaces, no interaction between people etc.

QueenOfToast · 26/11/2020 18:04

Thanks to @ListeningQuietly for that advice. I've been in contact with the studios I usually work with and they're planning to open and hold socially distanced classes.

I've still got my email from Better and have booked classes in Tier 2!

The letter waffles on a bit after these screenshots about booking in advance and cancelling if you can't go.

DS's dance school is opening for classes in tier 3... the owner says it's ok as it says 'activities for all under 18s can open'

Orangeblossom7777 · 27/11/2020 09:55

Thanks Whatsagoodusername I had that too but maybe I deleted it by mistake...I am in Tier 2 as well.
