@DappledThings

YABU - I don't care if me or my family catch it YANBU I don't want me or my family to catch it Well there's a world of options between there isn't there? Of course I don't actively want to catch it, neither am I scared of doing so.

I am taking those precautions as mandated by government, my place of work and my children's school/nursery. I am not and never have been quarantining my post, disinfecting the shopping or anything else like that. Pretty much the same as the majority of the population I suspect.

Agreed.
DisgruntledPelican · 24/11/2020 15:56

I was worried in the spring because I had a very young EBF baby and the idea of either me or DP having to self isolate, particularly if symptomatic, was difficult. We only have one bathroom and our spare room doesn’t have a bed in it, so it would have been difficult and restrictive to isolate effectively.

Now that DS is older, weaning and will happily take a bottle, I am slightly less worried. Still don’t want to catch it, but I don’t want to be ill with anything at all, its rubbish. I’m statistically very low risk and very healthy, but like others I am worried about long covid (in a way that I’ve never worried about post-viral syndromes before... my risk perception has been damaged by the constant media coverage)

blissfulllife · 24/11/2020 16:14

You know I actually wasn't too worried about catching it. Figured I'd probably be ok, I'm fit and healthy. My kids have only small chance of complications. Then on Thursday I heard a lovely lad from our estate died from COVID a week after catching it. He was 19. No known health problems. Just a lovely normal healthy happy young man taken by a virus. Now I'm scared!

Eesha · 24/11/2020 16:30

Personally I know about 10 who have had it, 4 hospitalised and all were nhs staff front line, two with no taste and smell only, 2 very sick at home and 2 symptom free but had to get tested for their work. It varies but sods law I'd get it badly.

Bathroom12345 · 24/11/2020 16:35

Not scared of it and looking at the areas that are likely to be in Tier 3 neither are they. Leicester has almost been in lockdown since the beginning and having two friends who live there they say its households just mixing and mixing. Culturally there are some big differences and its not normal to not mix with extended family - that and the fact they arent listening to Boris and co.

I know a couple of people who have had it (not the worried well who think they have had everything going) after a positive test including my DF late 80's. Nothing much to report. Felt a bit rough but now fine.

Until we know why it affects some people and not others we are struggling with it. If 45 people under the age of 40 died from it then do we really lock down the whole country?

On Wed Ricki will be announcing the costs of this. Its funny how people accept that this needs paying for as long as its not them who are paying.

Bathroom12345 · 24/11/2020 16:37

19 and no health conditions? That is very very unusual.

Isntdivorcefun · 24/11/2020 17:13

Well, people are going to hate this but obesity has been highlighted as an additional risk factor.

WhoopsSomethingWentWrong · 24/11/2020 17:13

@Isntdivorcefun

Why would people ‘hate’ it? That’s been well publicised since the start of the pandemic so I’m fairly sure most people are aware.
WhoopsSomethingWentWrong · 24/11/2020 17:14

And as I’m not obese it makes no difference to my assessment of risk.

Isntdivorcefun · 24/11/2020 17:16

I was referring to the unfortunate death of the 19 year old. That article clearly shows he was overweight for at least 15 years

Haenow · 24/11/2020 17:16

“Because I am interested in the level of fear that has been cultivated by the press, and the impact it’s having on previously sane and rational people.”

@TMIincoming

Talk about goady Hmm and I’m not even that worried about Covid, although I should be because I’m CEV and 25% of people with my disease have died when they caught Covid. Still think you’re ridiculous.

lljkk · 24/11/2020 17:17

I'm not afraid of the virus.

walksen · 24/11/2020 17:21

I was worried about catching it as I am overweight, have asthma and am male. Also middle aged.

Caught it at school when it burned through staff before half term.

I wasn't hospitalised and feel like I got away lightly but have suffered from fatigue over a month later and am having some memory problems. It does worry me as I am now struggling to keep up with my workload and feel like I am not performing as well.

I am not quite old enough to be eligible for the vaccine and hope you can't catch it again because it feels like I inevitably will come march april. Nothing has been done to reduce infections in schools since September and many decisions have made things worse

Apologies yes, it is clear that the poor 19 year old was significantly overweight.
BogRollBOGOF · 24/11/2020 17:26

Do I want it? No.
Am I scared? No. We are all low risk in our household and of healthy weight. We would be very unlucky to end up with serious complications. I want it as much as we would want flu or norovirus which are unpleasant and have potential for complications.

Bathroom12345 · 24/11/2020 17:29

Yes, the young lad was overweight and probably had some conditions which made him open to suffering from CV19. I dont think anyone can say he was fit and healthy.

I do wonder if seeing how this virus hits people who are overweight whether it triggers them to start to try and lose weight.

KrakowDawn · 24/11/2020 17:33

No-one knows what the effects of this virus on the body are ten years down the line. IMO people should be aiming not to get it.

Does that not apply to the vaccine as well?

Just seen a us news article. 2000 nurses polled pretty much a third prepared to be vaccinated, a third not, and a third unsure and waiting for more info

I have a friend who caught it and has just recovered. She is fine, lost her taste and smell and felt tired but nothing serious. Late 50's.

I honestly think we have gone too far with all of this. Of course ring fence the older people, care homes etc but could you imagine back in March telling people over the age of 75 to stay at home. There would be a massive backlash even though its this bastard virus that is causing this. Of course it isnt fair but the cost of this bearing in mind that 45 people under the age of 40 have died from it is just not worth the price.

NothingButADreamer · 24/11/2020 17:49

@DynamoKev

I don't want the fucker as there's no way of telling if I'd get the asymptomatic version or die.
Agree!
planningaheadtoday · 24/11/2020 18:19

I have a friend in ICU with covid. She's my age, no prior health concerns. Yes I am worried. It strikes very randomly and I am in a higher risk group.

The thought of being ventilated scares the beans out of me and I have a 30% chance of needing this should I get covid. So yes, I'm scared. And I think any sane person would be.

KrakowDawn · 24/11/2020 18:20

Indeed it does @Isntdivorcefun
Crap either way, really Sad

Attictroll · 24/11/2020 18:22

I don't want to catch it but am not scared. More scared of self isolated tbh
