To think people are scared about catching covid

Just that. YABU - I don't care if me or my family catch it. YANBU I don't want me or my family to catch it

I'm genuinely not scared of catching it. That doesn't mean I'm ignoring the rules before anyone jumps on me - I'm following them for the sake of other people. But if someone told me I could go back to normal without putting others at risk I'd do it happily.

I'm more scared of the economic impact on a personal level.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/11/2020 14:25

Well DH is CEV and I'm CV.
Chances of us surviving covid are not great. That's why we don't want to catch it.

DappledThings · 24/11/2020 14:28

Think about chickenpox, it's mild (ish) for most children, but it can be horrendous for a few with horrible sequels. No one in their right mind would not to be worried about their kids catching it.
I'm not worried about my children catching chickenpox. Yes there is a small chance there might be complications but not enough of a risk to be generally concerned about it. Sensible avoidance isn't the same as worry. If a friend or school told us they had had a case I wouldn't be rushing over there for DC to try and catch it but neither would I be remotely worried about them having caught it from them already.

Smallwhiterat · 24/11/2020 14:29

I’m no more worried about me or my children catching covid than flu, noro etc - I wouldn’t deliberately catch it as I’m sure it’s not a fun few days, but I’m not particularly worried about it and I wouldn’t take heroic measures to avoid it. I’m more concerned about various older family members although even then I’m more worried about their underlying conditions - cancer, dementia, heart disease - than I am about Covid. Covid might kill them but probably won’t. The dementia though is really only going one way.

Smallwhiterat · 24/11/2020 14:31

And I wasn’t worried about chickenpox in my kids either. Horrible few days of lots of spots and fever, then all over with no lasting effects. I wouldn’t deliberately infect them but I wasn’t living my life avoiding it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/11/2020 14:32

Wasn't worried about DS getting chicken pox either, the chances of a bad outcome are tiny. Same as Covid for us personally.

slowcookedbeef · 24/11/2020 14:34

I'm not scared about catching it. It never occurs to me that I'd be anything other very mildly affected. My age, gender, ethnicity and health conditions would all suggest that would be the case, in terms of statistics (including for long covid). I'm continuing to live life as normally as I can, using public transport, going out to indoor and outdoor venues when they are allowed to open, taking my dc to nursery, groups, attractions, restaurants and theatre. I'm in London, and most people are carrying on the best they can here.

I take all the precautions that are required of me to avoid me spreading it if I happened to be infected but asymptotic - e.g. mask wearing, distancing. But if something is legally allowed to open then I won't deprive myself or my family of experiences we enjoy, since I don't have any close contact with anyone who is vulnerable or elderly.

bathsh3ba · 24/11/2020 14:35

Surely nobody would say they want to catch it?

I would rather avoid it but am not especially worried if I do as I am neither in a high risk group nor have much contact with anyone who is, so statistically I'd probably be okay and so would my family/friends.

QueenBlueberries · 24/11/2020 14:36

I think it's completely unfair and inaccurate to compare covid to chickenpox. Do I need to explain why?

I don't want to catch covid, I don't want to pass it on. However I have to work (in a school) and I have two teenagers in school so we have a slightly higher chance than someone who can work from home. Still don't want to catch it though.

haircutsRus · 24/11/2020 14:39

Why are you asking?

boon · 24/11/2020 14:42

YANBU

urbansprawl · 24/11/2020 14:43

I am afraid. I've had massive complications from a virus before, and it took years to get over - I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I'm not sure whether it was the particular form of virus I had, or my own immune reaction, but if it happens again (or I got long covid), I wouldn't be able to do my job. I am worried about that.

AfterSchoolWorry · 24/11/2020 14:48

I don't want it, but I just wear my mask, wash my hands and get on with my life.

TMIincoming · 24/11/2020 14:50

@haircutsRus

Why are you asking?
Because I am interested in the level of fear that has been cultivated by the press, and the impact it’s having on previously sane and rational people
OP posts:
bumblingbovine49 · 24/11/2020 14:51

I tried the risk calculator and I have a 5% chance of catching Covid ( though I suspect it is higher as DS is in secondary school and they didn't ask about that)

I have a 0.445 ( so rounded to 0.5%) chance of dying from it. I imagine I have a much higher chance ( probably nearer 5-10%) of being seriously if not critically ill and possibly a 20% chance of being pretty ill.

So I generally prefer to keep.my chances of catching it as low as possible until I can get the vaccine . After that my chances of catching it reduce considerably to a fractional of what it is now and likely if I do catch it , it is likely to.be much milder of I have been vaccinated. So I'll.be much happier to go about doing stuff and.getting close to people again.

DumplingsAndStew · 24/11/2020 14:58

Where to start?

  1. you didn't enable voting

  2. because this isn't the AIBU board

  3. Of course nobody WANTS to catch Covid?

  4. your options are incredibly closed and there's a whole load of in-between options.

  5. Goady much?

LastTrainEast · 24/11/2020 15:07

I'm a bit concerned with the "previously sane and rational people" who are now furious that people are trying to prevent them catching it.

But I don't worry about it. I take all the precautions (because only crazed anti-vaxer types don't) and then forget about it. I haven't lost any sleep over it.

Bobtheshark · 24/11/2020 15:12

I don’t want to catch it. I don’t want to get any illness But I’m not scared of catching it.

Its been moved from aibu and so the voting option has gone (no idea why) votes were 79% YANBU with about 150 cast last time i looked

To be fair on 1) and 2) this was started on AIBU with voting and has been moved.

The rest of what you say is true!

DumplingsAndStew · 24/11/2020 15:25

Apologies for points 1 and 2 then. I thought MN always posted or edited if they moved a thread.
Sorry again.

Jaxhog · 24/11/2020 15:30

I am yes. But I'm over 60 have a long-term condition and am not the slimmest person around. I wish other people were equally concerned about giving it to me.

I also know several people who've died from it or still have long Covid.

Popcornriver · 24/11/2020 15:36

YANBU.

I don't want to catch it. Despite being young and healthy. The complications it causes worries me and I'm concerned about the long covid centres needing to be set up.

I don't think concern is an overreaction despite much of mumsnet being adament anyone daring to be worried should be speaking to someone about their anxiety problems and quoting it's just a flu. I was almost hospitalised with flu in my 20s. No health or weight issues and it was very, very frightening.

Wellthisismorethanabitgrim · 24/11/2020 15:38

I'm not scared as such but I really don't want DH or me to catch it as the outcomes are so uncertain. There's a strong chance we'd be ok given our ages etc, but who knows really. I also do not want to be part of the spread if I can help it. So we follow the rules, WFH, essential shop once a week, try to do as much non-food shopping as possible online, and are not eating out or going to the pub etc. Not seeing family as they live far away anyway and everyone has agreed it is sensible not to meet up for Christmas this year.

I'm just taking the rather be safe than sorry approach, and hoping 2021 will bring better things and more normality. So I'm not locked in the house gibbering under the bed but I am living life differently to normal and a lot of that is through personal choice not govt restrictions. I know a lot of people don't have the choice though, especially essential workers.

I vaguely know the woman in this article. This actually does scare me:

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 24/11/2020 15:39

No I don't want to catch it.
No I'm not scared to catch it
There's a strong possibility I've had it and also a strong possibility I've been exposed on a separate occasion
