Just that. YABU - I don't care if me or my family catch it. YANBU I don't want me or my family to catch it

@flaviaritt

I know not everyone on here is healthy and under 40 (so please don’t take this anything other than me saying this is why I am not horribly scared), but it has killed very few healthy young people. And when I say healthy, I mean people without previously known, serious health conditions. Less than 1% of total deaths. So it’s not that it’s not potentially serious, but the strong likelihood is, if I catch it, it will be okay.
I’m increasingly seeing people in this category at work who are presenting as if they have chronic heart problems or copd-like lungs, even having strokes. Long covid is much more of a worry and many were completely fit and healthy with either asymptomatic or mild symptoms. The repercussions of getting the virus are a much bigger worry than the immediate few days/weeks after infection.
romany4 · 24/11/2020 13:46

I've had it.
Never felt so ill in my life. Was literally bedridden for 3 weeks.
Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

praepondero · 24/11/2020 13:47

What did I do with @ in my reply? Sorry it was for OP Blush

PeggyPorschen · 24/11/2020 13:49

why on earth would anyone want to catch it?

Think about chickenpox, it's mild (ish) for most children, but it can be horrendous for a few with horrible sequels. No one in their right mind would not to be worried about their kids catching it.

Same with Covid. You have no idea if you would have a mild version, how your body would react, if catching it AGAIN wouldn't have a bad effect.

Covid is new enough that no one is talking about the long-term effects just yet. I am not hysterical about it, but I am a bit careful

Whatafustercluck · 24/11/2020 13:51

Of course I don't want to catch it, in much the same way that I don't want to catch anything debilitating that will make me feel really unwell and keep me off work/ inside/ in bed. But I am not scared - for me, personally. The whole point of everything we're doing is to protect the vulnerable and older people and it's how easily it is spread that scares me. It won't kill me in all likelihood, it might kill or hospitalise my older relatives. So you poll is a bit odd really as I imagine most people, if they are not in a high risk group themselves, feel much the same.

flaviaritt · 24/11/2020 13:51

Awful. Still, the vast majority of people I have heard of in this category appear to be fine after a couple of weeks, so I am going to keep that in mind.

vanillandhoney · 24/11/2020 13:52

I don't actively want to catch it, but I'm not scared of it either.

I had symptoms in March and if it had just been any other year, I'd have carried on my life as normal. As it is, DH and I had to take two weeks off work (without pay as we're both self-employed), which was a right pain. DH never got any symptoms and I really didn't feel unwell at all.

Userzzz · 24/11/2020 13:52

Why would I be concerned about something that has over a 99% survival rate?
I worry about cancer..your chances of eventually getting cancer and dying are much higher.

OneTC · 24/11/2020 13:53

From a health perspective I don't care but could live without 2 weeks isolation

MummaBear4321 · 24/11/2020 13:55

My sister is a nurse and has already had it, my mom works in a care home and has either had it and had no symptoms or will likely get it at some point, and my husband works in 5 different houses a day, so the idea my family getting it has been normal since March. I dont worry about it at all. It kills less than 1% of people. I worry more about them driving to work and crashing.

Trailing1 · 24/11/2020 13:55

People are scared, I can understand that fear.
I had it and recently went back to work, people are giving me a wide berth despite the PPE I'm wearing Grin

lazylinguist · 24/11/2020 13:56

It's not a sensible pair of options tbh. People are on a sliding scale of fear/not wanting to catch Covid, not a binary 'Yeah bring it on' vs 'Oh my god I'm terrified!" one. Nobody in their right mind would say they literally didn't care if they or their family got Covid, because however young and healthy you are, there's still a chance it could be nasty.

I'm not that scared because a) I'm pretty sure I had it, and it's pretty rare to get it again and b) I'm under 50 (just!) and pretty fit and healthy and so is dh. But obviously would definitely rather not have it (again).

XmasLockdown · 24/11/2020 14:02

I am not scared but happy that I haven't caught it yet. There is cases where people have gotten it twice. I go by the rules as long as asked but I am not locking myself in. If I have managed to avoid it this long I should be able to stay so until vaccine.

WhoopsSomethingWentWrong · 24/11/2020 14:06

You do realise that a thing exists called ‘nuance’, OP? It’s not black and white.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 24/11/2020 14:06

I'm not bothered about me catching it. But it's not my place to play fast and loose with anyone else's feelings.

iVampire · 24/11/2020 14:07

It’s not exactly that I’m scared, but I am living with leukaemia, and it could potentially be very serious for me

So yes, aside from DD going to school, I am very risk averse

Lazypuppy · 24/11/2020 14:08

I don't want it but i'm not worried about catching it.

IamHyouweegobshite · 24/11/2020 14:10

I am 47, I have asthma and unfortunately I have caught it. I feel crappy, terrible headache, bad chest, been put on steroids and antibiotics. I am really scared that this is the lull before the storm, I'm terrified of my breathing getting worse, going to hospital etc. I have a friend who's dh is suffering terribly with long covid after being ill in March.
I'm cross that I got it, I work in a school, I wear masks and visors, sanitise constantly, socially distance. I popped to Morrisons during the period that I could have caught it, again sanitising the basket, wearing a mask etc, I don't know where I caught it, but if you can catch it through doing all of those things, then it's absolutely everywhere, no matter how careful you are , you're at risk.

AllDoneIn · 24/11/2020 14:10

YANBU.

The covid calculator is interesting - I have a 19% chance of getting it and a 0.265% chance of dying. Survival probability 99.95 %. What I am concerned about is long covid.

JS87 · 24/11/2020 14:13

I'm not sure how many healthy people aged under 40 are worried about dying from it. Getting long covid and taking months to recover on the other hand....
Squirrelly1 · 24/11/2020 14:17

I don’t want to catch it (or pass it on). Statistically my chances of surviving it are good (but I’d rather not chance falling outside of the stats!)
Long covid concerns me, I have DC’s to care for, long term sickness would affect my livelihood.
None of us know how/ if/ when we’ll get it and what the impact will be.

flaviaritt · 24/11/2020 14:18

I’m not sure how many healthy people aged under 40 are worried about dying from it. Getting long covid and taking months to recover on the other hand....

True. To be fair, I’m not frightened of that yet as I haven’t seen enough evidence of what is going on.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2020 14:19

I've had it. I was a bit off colour for a few days. But have had worse colds. The self isolation on the other hand was horrendous as I live on my own.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2020 14:21

I am CEV but decided to to shield. and carried on working as I'm a nurse on a clean ward. I decided that shielding would have been worse than actually catching it.

firstimemamma · 24/11/2020 14:22

Couldn't care less about catching it.
